To find out whether an app uses your voice for AI training, check the privacy terms and data controls for the exact voice feature and account you use. Look separately for audio recordings, transcripts, model improvement, activity history, human review, retention, and deletion. A microphone permission only governs access to your device’s microphone; it does not tell you what happens to audio you submit to the service.
Check the app, voice feature, and account—not just the microphone permission
Start by identifying the product and the way you use voice. Dictation, a live AI conversation, a wake-word assistant, call transcription, and keyboard voice typing may have different data practices—even when they appear in the same app.
Also note whether the account is personal, managed by a school or employer, or used through a business or API plan. Settings and terms can differ by account type. Your phone’s microphone permission can restrict whether an app accesses the microphone, but it cannot show whether audio you intentionally send is retained or used to improve a model.
How to verify an app’s voice-data settings
- Read the privacy notice for the specific feature. Search it for “audio,” “voice recordings,” “transcripts,” “speech recognition,” “model improvement,” “training,” “human review,” “retention,” and “delete.” Check whether the terms cover raw audio, text derived from speech, or both.
- Inspect the app and account controls. Look for labels such as Data Controls, Activity, History, Improve the model, Voice & Audio Activity, or Analytics & Improvements. Read the description before changing a toggle: it may control saving, model improvement, or a single feature rather than all voice use.
- Review and delete existing activity separately. Turning off future saving or training may not remove earlier recordings or transcripts, or data already selected for review or improvement. Use the account’s activity page and deletion controls where available.
- Check what the setting covers. Confirm whether it applies to audio and transcripts, all voice features, other devices, and your account type. For a managed account, check with the administrator or the service’s workspace documentation.
- Re-check after updates. App menus and feature names can change. Use the provider’s current help and privacy pages rather than relying on an old screenshot.

These examples illustrate why a single “voice” or “history” switch is not enough. They reflect the providers’ documented controls; menus and terms can change, so follow the linked official pages for the current details.

ChatGPT voice
For personal Free, Plus, and Pro accounts, OpenAI says you can choose to share audio or video clips through Settings → Data Controls. Enable “Improve the model for everyone,” then the relevant “Include your audio recordings” or video option. OpenAI says associated voice clips are not used for training unless you choose to share them. Transcripts and other files from voice conversations may be used when model improvement is enabled, depending on plan and settings.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces cannot share voice clips for training through this control. OpenAI says standard dictation audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose audio sharing; Live or Advanced Voice clips are retained with the transcript for 30 days. Deleting a chat is stated to delete associated clips within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, or already-disassociated training exceptions. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Voice help.

Apple Siri and Dictation
On iPhone or iPad, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements for “Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence” or “Improve Siri & Dictation.” Apple provides equivalent controls for Mac, Apple Watch, HomePod, Apple TV, and Vision Pro, but the menu varies by device and operating system.
Apple says opting in permits use of Siri, Dictation, and Translate interactions to improve those features; its Siri AI opt-in can also allow data to train Apple foundation models. Apple describes random device-generated identifiers, retention generally up to two years for opted-in data, and a reviewed subset that may be held longer, as well as employee audio review. Consult Apple Support’s setting instructions and Apple’s privacy disclosure for the applicable device and current terms.

Google Assistant
In your Google Account, Web & App Activity includes “Include voice and audio activity.” Google says this is off unless enabled. Turning it off stops future Assistant recordings from being saved to the account through that setting; it does not delete previously saved audio or switch off separate Assistant audio settings. Review or delete older activity in My Activity.
Google says audio may be saved after activation, including mistaken wake-word detections, and may be used to improve audio-recognition technologies. Some samples may be reviewed by trained reviewers. See Google Account Help.

Gemini and Gemini for Home
Gemini Apps has separate controls for Keep Activity/history and audio or video improvement. With Keep Activity on, chats and certain shared content are saved; audio and Gemini Live recordings’ use for service improvement or training depends on a separate choice. Turning off that improvement choice stops future covered audio and Live recordings from being used to improve services, but Google says those inputs may still be processed to respond and for safety.
Google says Gemini activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period, configurable to 3 or 36 months or off. If Keep Activity is off, chats may still be retained for up to 72 hours for service, feedback, and safety. Gemini for Home has separate Home History and an “Improve Google services with your voice, audio, and Gemini Live recordings” setting; changing Gemini Apps settings alone may not govern Home. How to compare two apps’ voice practices
Do not assume that a service with fewer visible controls is necessarily using more or less voice data. Compare the same categories for each app and feature:
- Data collected: raw audio, transcript, or both.
- Purpose: processing a request, saving account history, improving a service, or training a model.
- Choice and default: whether use for improvement is opt-in or opt-out, and whether settings differ by account.
- Access and review: whether people may review samples and under what conditions.
- Retention and deletion: how long audio and transcripts remain, whether deletion is available, and whether earlier activity is covered.
- Scope: whether a control applies to dictation, live voice, assistants, and related products—or only one of them.
What a setting can—and cannot—tell you
- Processing is not the same as training. A service has to process speech to answer a voice request. That alone does not establish that it trains or improves models with the audio.
- Audio and transcripts can have different rules. A provider may discard audio after transcription but retain text, or request separate permission to use clips.
- History, improvement, review, and deletion are separate questions. A history toggle may govern account saving without controlling model improvement, human review, or another voice feature.
- An opt-out may not apply retroactively. Check whether it affects only future submissions, previously saved material, feedback you submit, other services, or managed accounts.
- Microphone access is not a record of downstream use. Permission settings limit device access; they do not explain how a service handles speech you deliberately submit.
- A physical mute is not a way to inspect training practices. It may prevent capture in some situations, but cannot determine or reverse use of audio already sent to a service.
The Federal Trade Commission warns that voice assistants can mishear wake words, potentially starting a recording unexpectedly. Its consumer guidance recommends reviewing recording controls, who may listen, and account security. The FTC’s 2023 discussion of Amazon and Ring describes historical enforcement allegations about retention, deletion, and employee access; it is not evidence of the current settings or practices of every app. Read the FTC consumer guidance and FTC’s Alexa/Ring discussion.
