FFmpeg running does not prove that YouTube is receiving your stream. Check each layer separately: the local process, whether FFmpeg can read its input, YouTube’s ingest status, the broadcast’s lifecycle, and stream health. For a channel you control, YouTube’s Live Streaming API gives the clearest ingest and broadcast-state signals; Live Control Room is the practical alternative if you do not want to build an API client.
What “still broadcasting” can mean
A continuous stream has several distinct states. FFmpeg may still be running while its input has failed or its output is no longer reaching YouTube. YouTube may be receiving encoder data while the associated broadcast is not yet live. And an active broadcast can still have health warnings.
| Signal | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process exists | The local process has not exited. | That it has readable input or successful YouTube output. |
ffprobe opens the input and lists streams |
The URL was readable and recognized as media at the time of the probe. | Continued availability, YouTube ingestion, or viewer playback. |
YouTube streamStatus=active |
YouTube is receiving encoder data. | That the stream is healthy or the broadcast lifecycle is live. |
YouTube health status is good or ok |
No issues meet the corresponding warning or error threshold described by the API. | Guaranteed playback for every viewer or future health. |
Broadcast lifecycle is live |
The broadcast is active on YouTube. | That the local encoder will remain healthy indefinitely. |
| Live Control Room shows health messages | Current creator-facing stream-health feedback. | A permanent guarantee or diagnostics for channels you do not control. |
For the API distinctions, see Google’s LiveStreams resource and LiveBroadcasts resource.
Check the local FFmpeg process and logs
Confirm the process has not exited
Use your operating system’s process manager or the process supervisor you use to run FFmpeg. The exact command depends on your operating system and deployment. A visible process is a useful first check, but it is only a local signal: it does not confirm that input is arriving or YouTube is receiving output.

Inspect recent log output
Review the latest FFmpeg logs for input-read failures, disconnects, output errors, or repeated reconnect attempts. Retries show that FFmpeg is trying to recover; they do not establish that recovery succeeded or that YouTube has a healthy feed. If a supervisor restarts FFmpeg, distinguish a currently running replacement process from uninterrupted streaming.
Probe the media input with ffprobe
ffprobe can open a media input and report its streams and format. Replace INPUT_URL with an authorized, accessible input URL:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "INPUT_URL"
The JSON output is useful for scripts, and stream selection can narrow inspection to video or audio. Consult the FFprobe documentation for options and syntax. If the URL cannot be opened or recognized as media, the command returns a positive exit code.

A successful probe is only a point-in-time observation. Access and probe behavior depend on the URL and protocol; a private YouTube ingest endpoint is not automatically a publicly probeable viewer URL. Probing an input also does not verify FFmpeg’s output to YouTube.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed
Use the LiveStreams resource when you control the channel
Retrieve the liveStream resource bound to the broadcast and inspect status.streamStatus. Google defines active as the stream being in an active state, meaning YouTube is receiving data via the stream; inactive means it is not receiving data. This is a more direct signal of YouTube ingest than the local process state.
The check requires access to the relevant YouTube API resource and authorization for the channel. See the LiveStreams API reference for the resource fields.

Check health separately from ingest
Inspect status.healthStatus.status and configurationIssues[] on the stream resource. The health details can flag issues involving bitrate, codec, frame rate, keyframes, or ingestion. In particular, videoIngestionStarved means incoming video is insufficient for smooth streaming and viewers may experience buffering. A noData health status means YouTube has no health information; it is not proof that the stream is healthy.
Use the issue details rather than treating active as an all-clear. Google documents the available messages in Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources.

Confirm the broadcast lifecycle
Check the associated liveBroadcast.status.lifeCycleStatus. The live state means the broadcast event is active; liveStarting is an intermediate state. YouTube says a transition typically takes 5 to 10 seconds and can take up to a minute, so poll again before treating a short delay as failure. The broadcast resource provides actualStartTime once live and actualEndTime once complete.

The API’s Life of a Broadcast guide explains the lifecycle and says to confirm the stream status is active to verify that YouTube servers are receiving encoder data. In practice, check both the bound stream’s ingest status and the broadcast’s lifecycle: they answer different questions.
Use Live Control Room or the watch page
For channel owners
If you do not want to build an API client, check the stream in YouTube Live Control Room while it is streaming. YouTube provides stream-health feedback, including error messages and instructions; see See your live stream’s metrics.
For external viewers
Playing the public watch page is a useful end-to-end observation: it tells you whether playback is available to that viewer at that moment. It does not expose owner-only ingest diagnostics, and a successful viewer check does not guarantee playback for every viewer or prove future continuity.

Monitor an always-on stream over time
A single observation can miss a later interruption or a brief transient failure. Schedule repeated checks and alert on a sustained failure rather than one isolated observation. Track the signals independently:
- Whether the FFmpeg process is present and what its recent logs report.
- Whether the media input can be opened with
ffprobe. - Whether YouTube reports
streamStatus=active. - Whether the broadcast lifecycle is
live. - Whether health status or configuration issues indicate a problem.
Choose a tolerance interval suited to the stream’s purpose; the cited documentation does not establish a universal polling interval. An alert should identify which layer failed, since a local process, ingest state, lifecycle state, and health warning call for different investigations.
What FFmpeg reconnect options can—and cannot—do
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes HTTP input options for reconnecting after disconnects, reconnecting when EOF occurs (noted as useful for live or endless streams), reconnecting on network errors, retrying selected HTTP status codes, and limiting retry counts or delays. These controls are protocol-specific. Check the installed build’s help and the FFmpeg documentation to confirm which options apply to your input.
RTMP is a multimedia transport over TCP/IP, but reconnect flags intended for HTTP should not be applied indiscriminately to RTMP or another protocol. Select recovery options for the actual input protocol. Retries may help recover from some transport failures; they do not confirm that YouTube is receiving data, that the broadcast is live, or that viewers can watch it.
Troubleshoot by the signal that failed
- FFmpeg is absent: the local process has exited or is not running where expected. Check the supervisor or launch configuration and inspect logs around the exit.
- FFmpeg runs, but logs show input errors or
ffprobecannot open the source: investigate input availability, URL access, and protocol behavior. A process that is retrying has not necessarily recovered. ffprobesucceeds, but YouTube saysinactive: the probe only confirms the input was readable at that moment. Check FFmpeg’s output path and logs, then verify the bound YouTube stream resource.- YouTube says
active, but health reports issues: ingest is occurring, but it may not meet YouTube’s expected conditions. ReviewconfigurationIssues[]and the specific health message for relevant video or ingest problems. - Stream is active, but lifecycle is
liveStarting: poll again during YouTube’s documented transition period, which typically takes 5 to 10 seconds and may take up to a minute. - Health status is
noData: do not interpret the absence of health information as a clean bill of health. Check other signals and look for health information again. - API state looks right, but playback is unavailable to a viewer: test the watch page separately. API ingest and lifecycle state do not guarantee playback for every viewer.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on YouTube rather than diagnose an FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. For Indian customers, UPI works; cards are accepted in India and worldwide. See the plans and pricing, then start your free day.
