Treat an AI interview coach as a source of draft suggestions—not as a source of truth. Check factual and employer-specific claims against current primary sources, compare general guidance with reputable career-services advice, and keep only suggestions that fit the role and your real experience. A polished, confident answer is not proof that it is accurate.

Why an AI interview coach needs checking

Generative AI can present false information confidently and may invent supporting logic or citations. NIST describes these risks in its Generative AI Profile. A coach can therefore sound persuasive while getting an employer’s hiring process, a role’s requirements, or a factual detail wrong.

There is no accuracy rate established here for AI interview coaches as a category. General AI risk guidance and career-service advice do not amount to independent performance tests of named coaching products. Judge the particular response and use case rather than assuming a tool is reliable—or unreliable—overall.

How to verify an AI coach’s advice

  1. Define the task. Note the job, seniority, location, interview type, and question. Advice may be a poor fit for your situation even if it is not factually false. NIST’s AI risk guidance emphasizes evaluating a system in the context of its intended use.
  2. Separate factual claims from suggestions. Mark statements about the employer, role, industry, interview format, qualifications, regulations, local hiring practices, or what a named interviewer values. Treat suggestions about delivery or answer structure separately; those still need to fit the question and your style.
  3. Verify employer and role details. Compare claims with the current job posting and official company materials. Check dates and jurisdiction for claims about regulations or local hiring rules. If the coach provides a citation, open it and confirm that it supports the exact claim—not merely a related topic. Harvard FAS career services cautions that AI can provide inaccurate, outdated, incomplete, misleading, or fabricated career information and employer details (AI Tools for Job Search).
  4. Check every personal example against your real history. Remove any experience, skills, metrics, or credentials the coach has added but you do not have. NIH career counselor Amanda Langer describes an example in which AI added skills and experience an applicant did not possess. NIH advises reviewing AI output and making the final answer your own (Using AI for Your Job Search). As Langer puts it, in the context of AI’s limits, “They cannot guarantee accuracy.”
  5. Test representative prompts, not just one answer. Try prompts that reflect the real task—for example, a behavioral question, a role-specific question, and a request for employer facts. Save the prompts and outputs, then mark each checkable claim as supported, contradicted, outdated, or unresolved. NIST recommends realistic, representative evaluation and documenting methods; this workflow applies that general guidance, but does not produce a validated accuracy score for interview coaches (NIST AI RMF Measure).
  6. Compare tools only on the same task. If you are weighing more than one coach, give each the same role, question, and relevant background. Compare source support, relevance, consistency across representative prompts, how it handles uncertainty, and whether it preserves truthful personal experience. These are practical comparison criteria derived from general AI evaluation principles, not a published head-to-head standard for interview coaches.
  7. Use the coach to practice, then edit. A useful suggestion can prompt reflection or help you organize an answer, but the final response should be an accurate account in your own voice. Do not present invented details as your experience.

Check the rules before using AI in an assessment

Preparation and assistance during a live assessment are not necessarily governed by the same rules. Read the instructions for the specific hiring process before using AI during a test. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s USA Hire Applicant Resource Center says AI tools are prohibited during USA Hire testing; its answer was updated July 29, 2026 (USA Hire Assessments). That rule is specific to USA Hire and should not be treated as a rule for every employer or for all interview preparation.

Keep a simple verification record

A brief log makes it easier to distinguish checked facts from persuasive-sounding guesses, especially when you try multiple prompts or revisit an answer later.

Record What to note
Use case Role, seniority, location, interview or assessment type, and the question you tested
Prompt and output The exact prompt and the coach’s answer
Checkable claims Employer, role, hiring-process, qualification, or other factual claims
Evidence and status The primary source checked and whether each claim is supported, contradicted, outdated, or unresolved
Personal fit Any invented or unsuitable experience, skills, metrics, or credentials to remove

This record is a practical way to apply NIST’s general recommendations for representative testing and documented methods. It is not a validated scoring instrument, and a few prompts cannot establish how a coach will perform on every question or change in product behavior.
