YouTube’s current guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. If you plan to stream from the YouTube mobile app, you additionally need at least 50 subscribers, livestreaming enabled, and a supported device. The 50-subscriber rule is for mobile livestreaming; YouTube’s general requirements do not list it for computer streaming.
Check the requirements for your streaming method
YouTube offers computer streaming through a webcam or an encoder, as well as streaming from the mobile app. The eligibility checks differ by method, so first decide how you intend to go live. YouTube’s general computer-streaming guidance lists verification and no livestream restrictions in the past 90 days, not a minimum subscriber count. YouTube’s computer livestreaming tips describe the available methods.
| Streaming method | Subscriber minimum | Other checks | Setup route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer: webcam or encoder | No minimum is listed in YouTube’s general requirements. | Verified channel; no livestream restrictions in the past 90 days; creator must be at least 16. | Use YouTube’s computer livestream setup in YouTube Studio. |
| Mobile app | At least 50 subscribers. | Verified channel; no livestream restrictions in the past 90 days; livestreaming enabled; supported device; creator must be at least 16. | In the YouTube app, choose Create, then Live. |
YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later as supported mobile operating systems in its mobile livestream instructions. Requirements and available setup options can change, so consult YouTube Help if your app or Studio labels differ.
How to check your channel step by step
- Confirm the method. For a computer, use YouTube’s webcam or encoder flow. For a phone or tablet, use the YouTube app; the mobile subscriber and device requirements apply to that route.
- Verify the channel. YouTube lists channel verification as a general livestream requirement. If you have not verified it, follow the verification prompt in YouTube’s account flow before attempting setup.
- Check for livestream restrictions. Review notices in YouTube Studio and try the relevant livestream setup. YouTube’s general rule is that the channel must not have had a livestream restriction in the previous 90 days. The available official guidance does not establish one universal eligibility dashboard that explains every account-specific failure.
- If using mobile, check the extra conditions. Confirm the channel has at least 50 subscribers, livestreaming is turned on, and the device meets YouTube’s listed operating-system requirements.
- Allow time for first-time activation. YouTube says enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours before a first stream is available. This wait guidance is specific to the first activation; YouTube does not promise a universal fix time for other account problems.
- Open the setup flow for your method. On mobile, open the YouTube app and select Create > Live. On a computer, use YouTube Studio’s live setup for a webcam or encoder. If the option is unavailable, use the troubleshooting checks below rather than assuming a particular account status.
Do you need 50 subscribers to livestream on YouTube?
Only the mobile-app eligibility guidance cited here specifies a 50-subscriber minimum. YouTube’s general requirements for computer streaming do not list a subscriber minimum, and computer streams can use a webcam or encoder. A subscriber count therefore does not, by itself, establish eligibility for every method; verification and restriction status still matter.

Why can’t I go live on YouTube?
- The Go Live option is missing on mobile: Check the 50-subscriber minimum, confirm that livestreaming is enabled, and make sure the device meets the listed OS requirements. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
- Setup is unavailable despite meeting the visible requirements: Check YouTube Studio for account notices and confirm you are using the setup flow for your chosen method. The official material does not promise a single status page or resolution time for every account-specific issue.
- You have an active restriction: YouTube can temporarily or permanently disable livestream access for policy or copyright reasons. Follow the notice and YouTube’s restriction guidance; using another channel to livestream while the restriction is active is prohibited.
- You are below 50 subscribers but want to stream from a computer: The 50-subscriber threshold is a mobile requirement, not a universal condition in YouTube’s general computer-streaming criteria. Check verification and restriction status and try the computer setup flow.
For details on enforcement and prohibited workarounds, see YouTube’s guidance on avoiding livestream restrictions.
Age and policy checks
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. It also warns that a stream featuring 13- to 15-year-olds without a visibly present adult may have live chat disabled and could lead to temporary loss of access to chat or other features. Check YouTube’s getting-started requirements for current account and age guidance.

Policy violations and copyright issues can affect livestream access. If YouTube has restricted the channel, do not use another channel to get around the restriction; consult the account notice and YouTube’s restriction information instead.
