Most iPhone 8 and later models can charge on a Qi-certified wireless charger, and you may not need to remove your case. Check your iPhone model, power the charger with its supplied or recommended adapter, and test the phone centered on the pad. If it will not charge or charges slowly, remove a thick, metal, or battery case and try again. Apple’s wireless charging instructions cover these checks.
Check that your iPhone supports wireless charging
Apple identifies iPhone 8 and later as compatible with Qi-certified wireless chargers. If you have an older model, the cited Apple guidance does not establish built-in Qi compatibility; check the specifications for your exact model before choosing a wireless charger.
Qi is the baseline wireless-charging standard in this check. MagSafe adds magnetic alignment on supported iPhone models, while Apple also lists Qi2-certified chargers as an option for faster wireless charging. These labels are not interchangeable: verify the exact iPhone model and charger capability if you want magnetic attachment or a particular speed. Check the charger and its power supply
- Look for Qi certification. Apple notes that Qi-certified chargers can vary in functionality and performance, so check the charger maker’s compatibility information for your model.
- Use the right adapter. Connect the charger to the adapter supplied with it or one recommended by its manufacturer. For MagSafe performance, requirements depend on the iPhone model and MagSafe charger version; do not assume any USB adapter provides the maximum rate.
- Check speed claims separately. A wattage printed on a charger does not guarantee that your iPhone will receive that power. Apple says actual MagSafe power varies with iPhone model, adapter wattage, charger version, and system conditions.
Test the iPhone on the charger
- Plug the wireless charger into its supplied or manufacturer-recommended power adapter.
- Place the iPhone face up on the charger, centered on the pad or in the position the charger maker specifies.
- Wait a few seconds and look for the battery charging icon. If it does not appear, adjust the phone’s position slightly.
- If the iPhone is connected to USB power, disconnect it for this test: Apple says a connected iPhone charges through the wired connection rather than wirelessly.
Find out whether the case is blocking charging
A case does not automatically make wireless charging impossible. Apple specifically advises removing a thick, metal, or battery case when an iPhone is not charging or is charging slowly. Test your current case before buying a replacement.

- Remove the case and any wallet, card holder, magnetic mount, or other object attached to or placed between the phone and charger.
- Repeat the centered, face-up test and check for the charging icon.
- If the bare iPhone charges but the cased phone does not, the case or an attached item is interfering. Check the case maker’s compatibility information; a thinner or MagSafe-compatible case may be appropriate if you want magnetic attachment.
Keep cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs away from the charging interface. Apple warns that objects between the iPhone and charger can reduce performance, and that items containing magnetic strips or RFID chips may be damaged.
Choose the charging option that fits your needs

Understand what charging-speed figures mean
Apple’s published figures are conditional peak or maximum rates, not a promise of sustained charging speed for every setup. Apple’s 2024 wireless charging guidance says many Qi-certified chargers can provide up to 7.5 watts with the latest iOS; that does not apply to every Qi charger. Its 2026 MagSafe guidance lists up to 25 watts peak for specified iPhone, MagSafe charger, and adapter combinations, and up to 15 watts peak for specified combinations using MagSafe charger version A2140 and a qualifying adapter. iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 12 mini have a separate limit of up to 12 watts under specified adapter conditions. Check Apple’s Qi and wireless charging instructions and MagSafe requirements for the combinations and exceptions that apply to your model.

An iPhone may also limit charging if it becomes too warm; warmth alone does not establish that the phone, charger, or case is incompatible. If removing the case and repositioning the phone do not help, consult the charger maker’s compatibility and troubleshooting information.
