Your iPhone’s charging icon confirms that charging has started; it does not tell you the charging speed. On iOS 18 or later, check for a Slow Charger message in Settings > Battery or on the Lock Screen. On iOS 26, you can also view an estimated time to your charge target. Neither cue is a live wattage reading.
Check your iPhone’s charging status and speed cues
- Connect and position the charger. Use the charger’s supplied or recommended power adapter. Center the iPhone on a Qi pad or follow its placement mark; a MagSafe charger should align magnetically with a supported iPhone or case.
- Look for the charging icon. If it is missing, reposition the iPhone and check that the charger is connected to power. The icon confirms charging, not that it is fast.
- Check for Slow Charger. With iOS 18 or later, look on the Lock Screen or go to Settings > Battery. Apple says this message means a higher-wattage charger could improve the experience; it does not by itself mean the phone or charger is defective.
- On iOS 26, check the time estimate. Settings > Battery can show an estimated time to 80%. If the battery is already above 80%, it can show an estimate to 100% or to your selected charge limit. The estimate may also appear near the top of the Lock Screen. Treat it as a practical estimate, not a live measurement of incoming watts.
Apple’s reviewed guidance does not document a built-in iPhone display for live wireless charging wattage. The icon, Slow Charger message and time estimate answer different questions; none reports instantaneous power.
Know what charger type and wattage can tell you
Apple says iPhone 8 and later support wireless charging with Qi-certified accessories. Many Qi-certified chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5W, though performance varies among Qi chargers. Apple identifies MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers as faster wireless options; its speed guidance notes that a wireless charger below 10W, such as a Qi1-certified charger, may make charging take longer than expected.

Do not judge speed only by the wattage printed on a charger. Compatibility, adapter output, magnetic alignment, case fit and the phone’s operating conditions all affect what the iPhone receives. A Qi2-certified wireless charger is a relevant upgrade to consider if your existing pad is an older Qi model; magnets or a high advertised wattage alone do not establish Qi2 certification.

Check whether your MagSafe setup supports its listed peak
Apple lists up to 25W peak for certain newer iPhone and MagSafe Charger combinations when paired with a qualifying power adapter. Its current guidance lists a 30W-or-greater adapter providing at least 15V/2A and specified MagSafe charger part numbers for eligible models. Apple lists lower peaks for some models: up to 20W for iPhone Air and up to 22.5W for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. These are Apple product specifications, not a promise that the phone will draw that power continuously.
- Identify your exact iPhone model and check Apple’s MagSafe compatibility information.
- Check the MagSafe charger’s generation or part number against the combinations Apple lists.
- Check the power adapter’s wattage and output profile; a high wattage rating alone does not prove that it meets the required profile.
- Connect the MagSafe charger to power before placing the iPhone on it. Apple says this lets the charger verify safe maximum power delivery. If you placed the phone first, remove it, wait three seconds, then put it back.
Apple’s stated peak rates apply only to the listed phone, charger and adapter combinations. The company cautions: “The actual power delivered to the iPhone will vary depending on the iPhone model, wattage of the power adapter, and system conditions.” See Apple’s MagSafe setup and compatibility guidance for the current combinations.

What can make wireless charging slow or pause
- Position or alignment: Re-center the phone on a Qi pad. With MagSafe, confirm the magnetic connection is aligned.
- Case material or thickness: Remove a thick or metal case and try charging again.
- Power adapter: A charger may not reach its best supported rate if the adapter is underpowered or lacks the required output profile.
- Accessories and activity: Disconnect wired accessories and avoid processor- or graphics-intensive tasks while charging.
- Temperature: Heat can limit charging above 80%. Extreme temperatures can temporarily hold charging until the battery returns to its normal operating range. Check Settings > Battery for a temperature-related hold, and move the phone and charger somewhere cooler.
