1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore adding a clip to an OBS playlist, probe its metadata with FFprobe, try decoding it with FFmpeg, and then play it through the OBS source you plan to use. These checks catch many file and playback problems, but only the OBS test checks the actual playback route you intend to use.
1. Check that FFprobe can read the file
FFprobe reports information about a media file’s container and streams. Run this command in a terminal, replacing clip.mp4 with the file’s path:
ffprobe -v error -show_error -show_format -show_streams -of json "clip.mp4"
-show_format requests container information, -show_streams requests information about the media streams, and -show_error asks FFprobe to report an error encountered during probing. If the file will not open or FFprobe reports an error section, investigate before using it.
If the command prints plausible format and stream information without an error, FFprobe has recognized the file’s structure. That is a useful first check, not proof that every frame can be decoded: probing metadata and decoding the complete clip are different operations. FFmpeg’s FFprobe documentation describes these reporting options.

2. Try decoding the file without creating a converted copy
Next, ask FFmpeg to read and decode the input while sending output to its null muxer:
ffmpeg -v error -i "clip.mp4" -f null -
The null muxer discards output instead of writing a new media file. Let FFmpeg finish, then check the messages and exit status. If you stop the command early, it only checks the portion it has read so far. FFmpeg’s Formats documentation describes the null muxer and gives a null-output example for decoding and benchmarking.

A run with no reported errors is evidence that FFmpeg decoded the streams it selected on that machine. It is not a guarantee that the clip will play flawlessly in OBS. Default stream selection may also leave alternate audio or video tracks untested.
3. Test playback in the OBS source you will actually use
Command-line checks do not reproduce every part of your OBS setup. Load the clip into the intended source and play it through, checking the picture and sound from beginning to end.

For one media file: Media Source
OBS Media Source plays a media file in a scene. OBS Project documentation lists these supported video extensions for Media Source: .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm. An extension on that list does not by itself establish that a particular file’s streams are intact or will play correctly in your setup.
For a multi-item playlist: VLC Video source
OBS documents VLC Video as the source for creating a playlist of items. Its Media Sources article says: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” The source uses VLC libraries for extended media support, so VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear in OBS. OBS also notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These details are from the OBS Project Knowledge Base article “Media Sources,” dated 2022-01-11.

Temporarily load the clip into the VLC Video playlist and test it there if that is how you intend to use it. A successful test in Media Source does not substitute for testing VLC Video, or vice versa: they are different playback paths.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the results
- FFprobe cannot open the file or reports a probing error: the file may be unreadable or malformed. Keep the original unchanged while investigating.
- FFprobe reports streams, but FFmpeg reports decode errors: metadata recognition succeeded, but decoding encountered a problem. The clip may be damaged or truncated, though the command alone does not establish the cause.
- Both command-line checks finish cleanly, but OBS playback fails: investigate the OBS source, its software dependencies, and compatibility with the file’s container or codecs. For VLC Video, verify that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The clip plays in OBS from start to finish: that is evidence it works through the tested source and local software environment. It does not establish that a different source or machine will behave identically.
FFprobe and FFmpeg can help distinguish a problem reading or decoding the file from a problem in the OBS playback route, but these checks do not identify one definitive cause in every failure. They are software checks, not a guarantee for a specific clip.
