Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility details first, then confirm recent reports for the exact online mode you want to play. Valve’s compatibility review explicitly covers Proton middleware, including anti-cheat. A game marked Verified is the strongest first-party signal, but an anti-cheat brand alone is not proof that protected multiplayer works. Developers must enable Proton support for each title, and policies can change after a game, Proton, or SteamOS update.
What the Steam Deck rating tells you about anti-cheat
Open the game’s Steam store page or select it in your Deck library. Valve assigns one of four Steam Deck categories to reviewed titles:

Valve’s system-support requirement for a Verified title says: If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.
That wording matters because a game can launch successfully while its anti-cheat middleware or protected servers still rejects a Deck connection.

- Open the game’s Steam store page or library entry. On the Deck, select the game and open its compatibility information. On desktop Steam, open the store page and locate the Steam Deck compatibility panel.
- Select “Steam Deck Compatibility” or “Learn more.” Do not stop at the colored category badge. The expanded explanation identifies the specific issue Valve found, such as unsupported middleware, launcher behavior, text readability, controls, or a required manual setting.
- Look specifically for anti-cheat or middleware warnings. A warning that the game’s anti-cheat is unsupported is direct evidence that protected multiplayer may fail. Record the wording and the date you checked it, because Valve’s review is ongoing and game updates publish every day.
- Check the notes for the exact game version or launcher. If the game uses a separate launcher, account check, or server component, treat those as part of the compatibility chain rather than assuming the game executable is the only requirement.
A Verified badge is meaningful because anti-cheat is included in Valve’s test, but it is not a permanent promise. A patch can introduce a new driver, change the server policy, or require a newer Proton release. Recheck the panel after major updates.

Step 2: Identify the anti-cheat system without treating its name as a guarantee
Game pages, launchers, and error messages may identify Easy Anti-Cheat or BattlEye. Both have documented Proton support paths, but support is opt-in for each game. The developer has to configure the game’s anti-cheat integration and permit Proton clients on its servers.
Easy Anti-Cheat
Easy Anti-Cheat can run through Proton when the developer enables the required Linux/Proton support for that title. Seeing “EAC” in a system message, store description, or installation folder only tells you which technology is present. It does not establish that this game’s current build accepts Steam Deck players.
BattlEye
BattlEye also has a Linux/Proton path that developers must opt into. A game may install BattlEye and reach its menu while its protected servers still reject Proton. Look for reports that name the same game build and multiplayer mode, not merely reports that BattlEye exists.

Runtime packages
Steam may offer a Proton BattlEye Runtime or Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime component. Installing a runtime can satisfy a local dependency, but it cannot override a developer’s server-side policy. Runtime installation is a troubleshooting step, not proof of compatibility.
Step 3: Check current, game-specific reports on ProtonDB
After reading Valve’s status, search for the exact game on ProtonDB. ProtonDB is community-maintained, so use it as corroborating evidence rather than an official guarantee.
- Prefer recent reports. Give priority to reports written against the current game build and a recent Proton version. An old success report may describe a configuration that no longer works after an anti-cheat or game update.
- Confirm the online mode. A report that says “runs” may refer only to the title screen or single-player campaign. Look for explicit confirmation that the author joined the protected mode you care about, such as ranked matchmaking, public servers, or co-op matchmaking.
- Record the configuration. Note the SteamOS version, Proton version, launcher, game version, and any runtime package. This lets you reproduce a successful setup and distinguish a game limitation from a local configuration issue.
- Compare several reports. One report can reflect a temporary server outage, an unusual custom Proton build, or a regional server difference. Consistent recent reports are stronger than an isolated result.
When reports conflict, rank the evidence by authority, recency, mode, configuration, and scope. Valve’s current compatibility explanation has higher authority than a forum comment. A recent report on the same game build and protected mode is more useful than an old report about single-player. A result from one server region or custom Proton tool does not automatically apply to every Deck installation.

Step 4: Test the mode you actually intend to play
Launching the game is only a preliminary check. Anti-cheat may initialize later, when you sign in, enter matchmaking, or connect to a protected server.

Use a controlled test
- Write down the game version shown in Steam or the launcher.
- Record the SteamOS version under Settings > System.
- Record the selected Proton tool from the game’s compatibility settings.
- Launch the game and note any anti-cheat, authentication, or “incompatible system” message exactly.
- Attempt the specific online mode you need. Reaching the main menu does not count as a successful anti-cheat test.
- Record whether you reached matchmaking, joined a server, and remained connected long enough to play.
If single-player works but protected multiplayer fails, report the result as “launches on Deck, online anti-cheat unconfirmed or blocked,” not as fully compatible. This distinction prevents a successful boot from being mistaken for a working multiplayer session.
Step 5: Try Proton versions only when the evidence points to a configuration problem
Steam Support’s compatibility control is located at Library > highlight the game > Menu > Properties > Compatibility > Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.

- Open that menu and enable the force-specific-tool option.
- Try the latest official Proton version available to your Deck.
- If a recent, credible report names another official Proton version, test that version as well.
- Restart Steam and retest the same online mode, recording the result.
- Return to the default setting if the change introduces crashes, launcher failures, or worse performance.
Changing Proton can fix a regression, a recently introduced compatibility issue, or a missing component. It cannot make a title compatible when the developer blocks Proton on its servers. Do not spend hours cycling through versions if Valve lists unsupported anti-cheat and current reports show the same server rejection.
How to decide when evidence conflicts

What to check before buying
- Steam category: Is the title Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown?
- Expanded reason: Does Valve mention anti-cheat or unsupported middleware?
- Mode: Do you need single-player, casual multiplayer, ranked play, or a particular server type?
- Current reports: Do several recent ProtonDB reports confirm that exact mode?
- Configuration: Which Proton version, launcher, SteamOS release, and runtime package did successful players use?
- Failure wording: Are reports describing a crash, a launcher problem, an anti-cheat initialization error, or a server-side rejection?
- Change risk: Has the game or anti-cheat recently updated, making older reports less reliable?
If the title is Unknown and you cannot find recent, mode-specific evidence, treat online compatibility as unverified rather than assuming it will work because the game is popular or uses a named anti-cheat product.

Common failure symptoms and practical responses
The game reaches the menu but refuses matchmaking
Confirm that you tested the protected mode, then compare the error with recent reports for the same build. Verify the selected Proton version and install any runtime component Steam specifically requests. If the error persists across current official Proton versions and reports identify a developer block, changing local settings is unlikely to help.

An update broke a previously working setup
Record the new game version, SteamOS version, Proton version, and exact error. Check the Steam Deck compatibility explanation and recent ProtonDB reports again. A previously successful configuration is evidence of past behavior, not a guarantee after a patch.
The launcher works, but the game disconnects after joining
This pattern often separates ordinary launch compatibility from server-side anti-cheat enforcement. Test without custom launch modifications, confirm the official Proton version, and look for reports that describe staying connected in the same mode. Do not label the game fully working until the protected session remains active.
Reports recommend a custom Proton build
Custom tools can be useful for diagnosis, but they make results harder to reproduce and may change with updates. First test the latest official Proton and document the custom tool’s exact version if you use it. A custom-tool success does not prove that Valve’s default Deck configuration is supported.
How to keep the answer current
Steam Deck compatibility is a moving status. Valve’s review can change, game patches can alter middleware, anti-cheat vendors can change Proton behavior, and SteamOS updates can affect launch or authentication. Keep a short record containing the date checked, Steam category, expanded compatibility text, game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, anti-cheat message, and online mode tested.
Recheck after a major game update, a SteamOS update, a Proton update, or a change in the game’s anti-cheat system. If you share your result, include those same details so another Deck owner can tell whether your experience applies to their configuration.
The reliable decision rule
Call a Steam game’s anti-cheat “working on Steam Deck” only when current evidence covers the mode you need: Valve’s compatibility details do not flag unsupported middleware, and recent game-specific reports or your own test show that the protected online session succeeds. A Verified badge strengthens that conclusion; Playable, Unknown, an anti-cheat brand name, a successful launch, or a manually installed runtime alone does not.
