Open the game’s Steam Store page and inspect System Requirements. If it lists SteamOS + Linux, the publisher offers a native Linux build. If it lists only Windows, the game may still run through Valve’s Steam Play compatibility layer, Proton—but that is something to verify for your hardware, distribution and the game’s online services before buying.

For a reliable decision, use the Store page first, then recent ProtonDB reports, Steam Deck badge details (if relevant), hardware and driver checks, and a final review immediately before purchase.

Start with the Steam Store page

The Store page is the authoritative starting point for what the publisher officially distributes through Steam. Find the game’s System Requirements section and record every relevant entry before you look at community ratings.

  • Operating systems: note whether SteamOS + Linux appears, or whether the page lists only Windows.
  • Minimum and recommended hardware: capture the processor, graphics card, memory and any other requirements.
  • Storage: check the required disk space and leave room for updates, shader caches and save data.
  • Launchers and accounts: look for a separate publisher launcher, third-party account, DRM or other middleware.
  • Online requirements: note whether an internet connection or an external service is needed.

Steam Support directs buyers to this section for both platform and hardware compatibility. A Linux operating-system entry is meaningful, but it does not guarantee a particular frame rate or flawless operation on every distribution.

What “SteamOS + Linux” means

The official SteamOS + Linux category is the clearest sign that the publisher supplies a native Linux build through Steam. Native means the game includes a Linux executable rather than relying on Proton to translate Windows system calls.

Native status usually removes one layer of compatibility uncertainty, but it does not remove ordinary PC requirements. Your graphics driver, GPU feature support, CPU, memory, storage speed and display resolution still determine whether the game performs acceptably. A native build can also have bugs, missing features or an outdated port.

What a Windows-only listing means

A Windows-only Store listing says the publisher does not advertise a native Linux build on that page. It does not prove that the game cannot run on Linux. Valve’s Steam Play system can run many Windows games through Proton, a compatibility layer that Steam deploys for Linux and Steam Deck.

Windows-only should therefore trigger a verification process rather than an automatic no. The game’s launcher, DRM, video playback, anti-cheat and other middleware must also work under Proton. A title that starts successfully in a menu may still fail when it reaches an online service or a protected multiplayer session.

Native Linux versus Proton: know which path you are buying

Question Native Linux build Windows build through Proton
What the publisher lists SteamOS + Linux appears in System Requirements. Usually only Windows appears.
How it runs A Linux version supplied by the publisher. Steam Play uses Proton to run the Windows version.
Evidence to check Store requirements plus hardware and driver fit. Recent ProtonDB reports, Proton version, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat and hardware.
What the status proves That a Linux build is offered; not a guaranteed frame rate or universal distro support. That other users have reported a result; not a guarantee for your computer.
Common extra risk Port-specific bugs or missing parity with Windows. Middleware, launchers, anti-cheat, updates and game-specific Proton behavior.

Keep the distinction visible when you make your decision. “Runs on Linux” can describe either route, but native support and Proton compatibility have different failure modes and different evidence behind them.

Use ProtonDB for a Windows-only game

ProtonDB is a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck reports. It is the most useful next check when the Store page does not list SteamOS + Linux. Search for the exact game and read several recent reports instead of relying on one score.

How to read a report

  • Recency: prefer reports made after major game, launcher or Proton updates. Old success reports may describe software that has since changed.
  • Proton version: record which Proton release the writer used. A result with one version may differ with another.
  • Distribution: note whether the report came from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora or another distribution. This is context, not a guarantee that the same result will occur on yours.
  • GPU and driver: compare the reporter’s graphics hardware and driver family with your own. A working report on one GPU does not establish performance on another.
  • Launch options and fixes: look for required settings, environment variables, compatibility-tool changes or workarounds. Treat every workaround as a step you may need to repeat after an update.
  • Launcher behavior: check whether a publisher launcher opens, accepts input, downloads updates and returns to the game correctly.
  • Video and audio: look for reports of black screens, missing cut-scenes, broken codecs, stutter or absent sound.
  • Multiplayer: confirm that users can reach the service, join a match and remain connected—not merely start a single-player campaign.

The community rating is evidence from other setups, not a certification. Several detailed, recent reports that match your distribution and GPU are more useful than a single high or low label without context.

When ProtonDB has no reports

No report means no community evidence, not proof of failure. Check the game’s middleware and anti-cheat requirements, then decide how much uncertainty you are willing to accept. If a refund is important to you, plan to test promptly within Steam’s applicable refund conditions rather than assuming an unreported title will work.

Check Steam Play and Proton expectations

Steam supplies Proton as the compatibility layer used by Steam Play. In the Steam desktop client, the compatibility settings let you choose whether Steam may use a compatibility tool for supported Windows titles and, when appropriate, select a Proton version. The exact wording can change between client releases, so follow the current labels under Steam’s settings for compatibility.

Before buying, verify more than whether the game launches:

  • Does the game reach its main menu without a crash?
  • Does the launcher, if any, accept keyboard, mouse and controller input?
  • Do videos, voice chat, audio and overlays work?
  • Does the game save and load correctly?
  • Can you connect to the intended multiplayer service?
  • Does the anti-cheat system permit a normal match?

Proton can make a Windows-only game usable, but it cannot make unsupported middleware compatible by itself. A game update can also change behavior, so a successful report is a snapshot rather than a permanent promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the game’s requirements to your Linux computer

Compatibility and performance are separate questions. A game can be playable through Proton yet run below your target frame rate, suffer from shader stutter or require settings that you do not want to use.

Compare the processor, graphics and memory

Put the Store page’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU and RAM beside your system specifications. Treat the minimum as a starting point for launchability, not a performance target. If your hardware is close to the minimum, expect to adjust resolution, texture quality, shadows and other settings.

GPU model and driver support matter particularly on Linux. Compare the graphics API and feature level implied by the game with the capabilities of your installed driver. Keep the driver current through your distribution’s supported mechanism, but avoid changing drivers solely because a random report used a different package.

Check storage and display constraints

Verify that the installation fits with room for patches and compatibility data. A nearly full drive can create failures that look like Proton problems. Also compare your display resolution and refresh-rate goals with what the game and your GPU can sustain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a compatibility badge as a benchmark

Neither a native Linux entry nor a ProtonDB success report tells you that the game will meet your preferred frame rate on your machine. Use the game’s stated requirements, your hardware headroom and reports from similar systems to form a performance expectation.

Understand Steam Deck compatibility badges

If you are buying for a Steam Deck, use the badge on the Store page and open its details. Valve’s review is specific to Deck hardware, controls and display behavior; it is useful evidence for Deck play but does not certify every desktop Linux distribution or hardware combination.

Badge Valve’s meaning What to expect
Verified Works great out of the box. Valve found the title meets its Deck criteria without requiring the kind of manual intervention associated with Playable.
Playable Works, but may require manual tweaking. You may need to select a controller configuration, use the touchscreen for a launcher or make another documented adjustment.
Unsupported Currently nonfunctional on Deck. Do not assume a normal Deck experience. Investigate separately if your desktop Linux setup differs substantially.
Unknown Valve has not checked it. The missing badge is not evidence that the game fails; it means Valve has no published review result.

What Valve checks

Valve’s criteria include controller input, support for the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display modes, legible text, a seamless launcher experience, Proton support for the game and all middleware, and anti-cheat behavior. Valve states that when a game runs through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton, including anti-cheat support.

Steam Deck Oled 512 GB Handheld Gaming Console with 1280x800 HDR OLED display, Up to 90Hz Refresh Rate, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, With Carrying Case & 45W Power Supply
  • 512 GB NVMe SSD: Fast storage for quicker game load times and space for larger game libraries.
  • OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.
  • Custom AMD APU: Power-efficient Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 GPU for desktop-level gaming performance.
  • Expandable Storage: Add more space with a microSD card slot, ensuring you can bring even more games with you.
  • Versatile Controls: With built-in thumbsticks, trackpads, and touchscreen controls, you have full control over your gaming experience.

Read the badge details rather than stopping at the color or label. “Playable” identifies an expected user action; it does not mean the title is broken. “Unsupported” describes Valve’s current Deck finding, which may not predict a different desktop configuration. “Unknown” is simply an unreviewed state.

Multiplayer and anti-cheat need a separate check

Single-player success is not enough if your reason for buying is competitive or cooperative online play. Anti-cheat systems and network middleware can behave differently under Proton, and Valve explicitly includes them in its Deck system-support criteria.

Questions to answer before purchase

  • Do recent ProtonDB reports confirm that players can enter the game’s online service?
  • Do they mention the specific anti-cheat technology or a recent change to it?
  • Does the external launcher complete sign-in and update normally?
  • Are there reports of kicks, blocked matchmaking or account restrictions?
  • Is multiplayer available on your intended region and server platform?

If reports are contradictory, assume online compatibility is uncertain. A title can remain playable offline while its anti-cheat or account service prevents multiplayer.

Use this pre-purchase workflow

  1. Open the Steam Store page. Scroll to System Requirements and record operating systems, minimum and recommended hardware, storage, launchers and account requirements.
  2. Identify the official platform path. If SteamOS + Linux is listed, mark it as native Linux support. If only Windows is listed, continue as a Proton candidate.
  3. Check your machine. Compare CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, display and driver support with the stated requirements. Note any narrow margin that could limit performance.
  4. Search ProtonDB for Windows-only games. Read multiple recent reports and record the Proton version, distribution, GPU, launch options, launcher behavior and multiplayer result.
  5. Inspect middleware. Verify the publisher launcher, DRM, video components, account sign-in and anti-cheat path. Do not assume that a game menu proves these parts work.
  6. Check the Steam Deck badge if applicable. Read the detail behind Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown and compare it with how you intend to play.
  7. Decide your tolerance for tweaking. Native support and Verified status suit buyers who want a low-intervention setup; ProtonDB success with launch options may suit buyers comfortable maintaining settings.
  8. Recheck immediately before paying. Compatibility reviews, game updates, Proton versions and community reports change continually. New titles and updates are published every day, so an older check can be stale.

A practical decision matrix

Evidence you find Risk level Reasonable decision
SteamOS + Linux listed; requirements fit your system; no critical middleware issue found. Lower platform risk Buy if the expected performance and features meet your needs, while remembering that native does not guarantee a frame rate.
Windows-only; several recent ProtonDB reports match your distribution and GPU; multiplayer and launcher work. Manageable Proton risk Buy if you are comfortable using the reported Proton version and repeating any required settings.
Windows-only; reports work only with old Proton versions or unusual launch options. Higher maintenance risk Buy only if you accept troubleshooting and have a fallback plan.
Reports launch the game but consistently fail on anti-cheat, launcher sign-in or multiplayer. High online-play risk Do not buy for that online feature unless newer evidence directly resolves the failure.
Steam Deck badge is Unknown and ProtonDB has little or no current evidence. Unverified Treat the purchase as experimental rather than assuming either success or failure.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: assuming Windows-only means impossible

Windows-only means no native Linux listing. Proton may still provide a good result, so check recent reports and middleware before rejecting the game.

Mistake: treating a high ProtonDB rating as a guarantee

Reports come from different distributions, GPUs, drivers and Proton versions. Match the details to your setup and read the text behind the rating.

Mistake: confusing Steam Deck Verified with desktop Linux support

Verified is a Deck-specific review of controls, display, seamlessness, Proton and anti-cheat. It does not test every Ubuntu, Linux Mint or Fedora desktop configuration.

  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Mistake: ignoring the launcher

A launcher can fail before the game itself starts, lose controller support or require a separate account. Check launcher reports and account requirements on the Store page and ProtonDB.

Mistake: checking only single-player

Anti-cheat and network services can block multiplayer even when the campaign works. Look for reports that confirm the exact online mode you intend to use.

Mistake: relying on an old report

Game patches, Proton releases and compatibility reviews change over time. Repeat the check immediately before purchase, especially for a newly updated title.

What to do after buying

Install the game promptly and test the features that determined your decision: launch, save, graphics, audio, controller input, video playback and multiplayer. If it fails, compare the symptom with current ProtonDB reports and the compatibility tool selected in Steam. A report that names your distribution, GPU and Proton version will be more useful than a one-line complaint.

Keep a record of any launch option or Proton version that works. Updates can reset compatibility settings, and documenting the known-good configuration makes recovery faster. If the game remains unusable and you are within Steam’s applicable refund conditions, use the platform’s current refund process rather than continuing to troubleshoot indefinitely.

Bottom line

Use SteamOS + Linux on the Store page to identify a publisher-provided native Linux build. For Windows-only games, verify Proton compatibility with several recent ProtonDB reports, paying special attention to your distribution, GPU, Proton version, launcher, DRM and anti-cheat. Check your hardware separately, read the full Steam Deck badge details when relevant, and repeat the review just before purchase. This process cannot guarantee every update or configuration, but it replaces a guess with evidence matched to the way you plan to play.
