Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details first, then compare recent reports for that exact game and test representative gameplay if you can. The Steam label helps assess compatibility, but it does not promise a particular frame rate, image quality, battery life, or online feature on every Deck setup.

1. Check the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility details

Open the game’s Steam Store page or Library entry and find its Steam Deck compatibility details. Note the displayed label and any specific caveats about controls, text, or features. Check the details when you are making your decision: Valve described compatibility ratings as a snapshot that can change over time in its March 4, 2022 announcement.

The label addresses more than raw rendering speed. Valve’s 2022 examples included issues such as keyboard prompts and optional functionality, but those dated examples should not be treated as a complete or guaranteed description of today’s rating rules.

2. Define what “runs well” means for you

A game can launch successfully and still miss your needs. Decide which outcomes matter most before judging its status or someone else’s report:

  • Reliable launch, stability, and save/load behavior.
  • Controls that work comfortably without relying on a keyboard and mouse.
  • Text and interface elements that are readable on the handheld screen.
  • Smooth motion and consistent frame pacing in demanding gameplay, not just menus.
  • Online play, anti-cheat, or other required features that work.
  • Acceptable heat, fan noise, and battery behavior at your chosen settings.
  • Whether any required settings change or Proton override is practical for you.

3. Look for recent reports about the exact game

Community reports can show how a particular game behaves in practice, but they are not official certification or guarantees. Prefer reports that state the test date, game version, Deck model, SteamOS and Proton versions, graphics settings, and the area or activity tested. Compare more than one report when possible.

Steam curator pages such as Deck Compatibility and Deck HQ include game-specific observations. Reports may discuss controls, readability, stutter, frame rate, settings, and battery behavior. A brief “runs great” post may omit a demanding late-game scene, a control limitation, or a workaround that matters to you; older observations, including some dated 2022 examples, may no longer match current software or game builds.

4. Test more than the opening menu

If you can try the game on the Deck you intend to use, sample the parts most likely to expose problems. A launcher or menu alone cannot establish how demanding gameplay performs.

  1. Launch the game and check for errors or unexpected setup steps.
  2. Play a demanding scene as well as ordinary combat, traversal, or other typical gameplay.
  3. Watch for crashes, prolonged stutter, uneven frame pacing, or sharp slowdowns.
  4. Check that controls work in actual play and that text and interface elements remain legible at handheld size.
  5. Save and load, then test any online, multiplayer, or anti-cheat feature you need.
  6. If battery life matters, observe it during the same kind of gameplay and settings you expect to use; do not infer it from frame rate alone.

5. Tune settings against a clear priority

If performance is close to acceptable, change one major variable at a time. Try the game’s graphics options and the Deck’s performance controls, then repeat the same representative scene so the comparison is meaningful. A stable lower frame-rate target may feel better than a higher target that fluctuates. If battery life is a priority, record behavior under the settings you plan to keep.

Community reports sometimes give FPS or battery figures, but those numbers describe the specific game and test conditions reported; they are not general expectations for other games or setups.

6. Consider a per-game Proton version only when it addresses a specific issue

Proton is the compatibility layer SteamOS uses to run many Windows games, but it does not ensure that every game or feature works well. If a game has a known issue, check whether its developer or a recent, credible game-specific report recommends a particular Proton version. A different version may help one problem; it is not a universal fix.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

For example, in a December 5, 2022 Steam post, the developer of Zeepkist described an analogue-input issue and recommended Proton Experimental for that title. The per-game override is set from the Library: select the game, open its settings, choose Properties > Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and select the recommended Proton version. Use this only when it is relevant to the issue you are trying to solve.

7. Make a verdict that matches your evidence

State the game, Deck and software context you checked, the scenes or features tested, and the compromises you found. A useful verdict distinguishes among works well out of the box, works with named compromises, and does not meet this player’s requirements. Avoid calling a game perfect unless the evidence covers the device, game build, software version, gameplay, and criteria behind that claim.

SteamOS is Linux-based, and Valve describes Proton’s role in running many Windows games on its SteamOS information page. That explains why Windows games may run on the Deck; it does not establish that every game or feature will work well.
