The dependable answer comes from the demo’s own Steam listing and a complete test on your Deck. Search for the demo as a separate title, open its Steam Deck Compatibility details, then launch the demo and check controls, text, graphics, audio, saving, suspend/resume, and any launcher or sign-in screen. A full game’s rating does not automatically establish that its separate demo app works.
Why a demo needs its own compatibility check
A Steam demo is often a separate app entry from the paid game. Valve’s compatibility information is attached to individual titles, so the parent game’s Deck result should not be treated as a guaranteed result for the demo. Search for the exact demo name and inspect that entry in both the store and your Library.
The compatibility badge is useful, but it is not a substitute for trying the entire demo. A title marked Verified is intended to work without changes, while a Playable title can need a small adjustment. An Unknown title has not been tested by Valve, and an Unsupported title currently fails one or more of Valve’s criteria. Updates to the demo, Proton, SteamOS, or a launcher can change the practical result.
Step 1: Open the demo’s own Steam store page
- Open Steam on your Deck or another device signed in to the same account.
- Search for the demo using its exact title. If the full game and demo have similar names, select the listing explicitly identified as the demo.
- On the demo’s store page, find the Steam Deck compatibility badge.
- Open the detailed Steam Deck Compatibility section rather than relying only on the short badge.
Steam Support describes the detailed result as a title-level review. It can show the requirements that were not met when a game is labeled Playable or Unsupported. Read those details before installing: they can identify a control, display, launcher, or other issue that will affect how you test the demo.

Step 2: Check the installed demo entry on the Deck
- Open Library on the Deck.
- Select the installed demo, not the full game’s entry.
- Open the demo’s game information or compatibility details.
- Compare the Library result with the store-page details. If they differ, use the information attached to the demo you will actually launch and treat the result as a snapshot that may change after an update.
This check matters when a publisher offers several applications, such as a main game, a prologue, a test branch, and a demo. Installing the correct app and reading its own details prevents you from borrowing a rating that Valve never assigned to that particular demo.
Step 3: Understand all four Valve labels

Playable is not a weaker form of “broken.” It is a warning that the default path may need a deliberate input or navigation change. Conversely, Verified is not a lifetime guarantee: compatibility reviews and software versions change.
Step 4: Read which Verified requirements were missed
For a Playable or Unsupported result, open the expanded compatibility information and note each requirement that is not currently met. Organize the notes into the areas you will check during testing:

- Input: whether a controller is recognized, whether every required action can be performed, and whether prompts match the controls you are using.
- Display: whether text and menus are readable at Deck display resolutions, and whether the game presents correctly without inaccessible UI.
- Seamlessness: whether the demo launches without avoidable obstacles such as a required launcher, a sign-in step, or an interruption that prevents normal play.
- System support: whether the title depends on software such as Proton or anti-cheat components that Valve’s review identified as a problem.
Record the exact wording before changing settings. That gives you a baseline and makes it easier to determine whether a workaround fixed the stated issue or merely changed a different symptom.

Step 5: Run the complete demo, not just the opening screen
A short launch test can miss the part that makes a demo impractical. Play far enough to exercise every feature the demo offers. The following sequence mirrors the input, display, seamlessness, and system-support areas used in Valve’s compatibility criteria.
First launch and menus
- Start the demo from the Deck’s Library entry.
- Confirm that it reaches the title screen without a crash, blank window, or blocked launcher.
- Move through the main menu, settings, pause menu, and any mode or chapter selection.
- Check that the interface can be operated with the controls you intend to use. If a menu requires a touchscreen, mouse, or keyboard, note that manual requirement.
Controller input and prompts
- Test movement, camera control, selection, confirmation, cancellation, pause, and any actions the demo introduces.
- Verify that analog sticks, triggers, bumpers, face buttons, and the D-pad respond consistently where the demo uses them.
- Watch the on-screen prompts. A demo can launch successfully yet remain confusing if it displays keyboard keys while you are using a gamepad.
- If the compatibility panel calls for a controller-layout change, apply that change and repeat the same actions. A workaround is useful only if it covers normal play rather than one menu.
Text, menus, and display behavior
- Read dialogue, tutorials, subtitles, inventory text, tooltips, and settings labels at 1280×800 or 1280×720.
- Check text at the demo’s default scale before changing graphics options. A menu that is technically visible but unreadable is a practical compatibility failure for the session.
- Open and close maps, overlays, cut-scenes, and resolution or display-mode settings. Look for cropped edges, missing UI, flicker, or a window that does not fit the screen.
Graphics and performance during play
- Play through a representative section rather than judging from a static menu.
- Try the available graphics settings only when necessary, recording which change you made. Return to the default configuration if a change creates a new problem.
- Check transitions between gameplay, menus, cut-scenes, and loading screens. A demo that starts well but fails during a transition is not a reliable experience.
Audio and video playback
- Confirm that music, effects, dialogue, and subtitles work together.
- Play any introductory or in-game video. Note a black screen, missing audio, an unskippable clip, or a video that prevents progress.
- Check the volume and subtitle controls in the demo’s own settings rather than assuming they behave like the full game.
Saves and progress
- Reach a point at which the demo saves, if it offers saving, and verify that the save or checkpoint is available after returning to the title screen.
- Quit and relaunch the demo to check whether progress is retained as the demo intends.
- Do not assume that a demo’s save will transfer to the full game unless the publisher explicitly says so; that is separate from whether the demo runs.
Suspend and resume
- Pause the demo, press the Deck’s sleep control, wait briefly, and resume.
- Return to gameplay and test input, audio, video, and the current save or checkpoint.
- If the demo returns to a menu, freezes, loses sound, or requires a restart, record that as a suspend/resume limitation even if a fresh launch works.
Launchers, sign-in, and online checks
- Complete every launcher screen the demo presents. Test whether navigation is possible with the controller and whether touchscreen or mouse input is required.
- Check any account sign-in, terms prompt, or connection check that appears before play. A title can be labeled Playable while still requiring this manual step.
- If an anti-cheat or another system component blocks the demo, treat the block as the reason for the failed test rather than as a graphics problem.
How to judge the result after testing

Use the strictest failure that affects normal play. For example, a demo that reaches gameplay but cannot be controlled without a mouse should not be described as working “out of the box.” A demo that needs one documented layout change may still be a good Playable experience.
What to do when a Windows demo will not start
For a Windows demo that fails to launch, Steam lets you choose a different Proton compatibility tool. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the Proton change helped.

- In Library, select the demo.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button.
- Choose Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select a different Proton version that is already installed.
- Close the properties window and launch the demo again.
- Repeat the complete launch and input checks, not just the first splash screen.
Proton releases include fixes and can change compatibility results. If a demo worked before an update or stopped working after one, retest with the current default and with another installed version. Keep a note of the Proton version that produced each result so you can return to a known configuration.

Forcing Proton is a workaround, not a replacement for Valve’s label. It can make an Unknown or Unsupported title usable, but it can also introduce a new controller, video, launcher, or suspend/resume problem. Judge the result by the full-demo checklist.
Use ProtonDB as supporting evidence
Search the exact demo name on ProtonDB after checking Steam’s own compatibility details. ProtonDB aggregates user reports and configuration advice for Linux and Steam Deck, which can reveal launch options or workarounds that are not obvious from the store page.
- Prefer recent reports over old ones because Proton, SteamOS, and the demo itself change.
- Favor reports made with a Steam Deck and software versions close to yours.
- Look for reports that describe the same symptom you observed, such as a launcher block or missing video, rather than accepting a generic “works” comment.
- Treat ProtonDB as community evidence, not Valve certification. The Steam listing remains the official source for the current Valve status.
If reports disagree, reproduce the issue on your Deck and document the version, setting, and exact step that fails. A single successful community report does not prove that every Deck configuration will behave the same way.

The demo is missing from the search or Library
Search the exact title and distinguish the demo app from the full game. If you installed a separate demo, select that entry when checking compatibility; do not infer its result from the parent game.

The badge says Verified, but the demo is difficult to use
Open the detailed compatibility information and run the complete checklist. Verified describes Valve’s reviewed result at that point in time; it does not remove the need to test a changed demo build, launcher, or Proton environment.
The badge says Playable
Read every unmet requirement, perform the indicated manual step, and retest the affected input or navigation path. Decide whether the adjustment is acceptable for your use rather than treating the label as an automatic failure.
The badge says Unknown
Run the entire hands-on test and compare recent ProtonDB reports with your SteamOS, Proton version, and hardware. Unknown records the absence of a Valve test, not a negative test result.

Use the detail panel to identify the failed criteria. Test only if you are willing to troubleshoot, and describe any successful workaround as configuration-specific rather than as a change to Valve’s current status.

The demo opens but a launcher or sign-in blocks progress
Try the launcher with the controller, then the touchscreen or mouse if the compatibility details indicate that one is needed. If sign-in or an online check cannot be completed, record that blocker separately from graphics or performance.
Changing Proton fixes launch but breaks another feature
Repeat the complete test after every Proton change. Check controls, text, audio, videos, saves, and suspend/resume; keep the version that provides the most usable whole-demo result, or return to the default if no version is reliable.
When to recheck a demo
Compatibility is a snapshot. Recheck the demo after a major demo update, a Proton release, a SteamOS update, or a launcher change. A new Proton release can add a fix, while a new build can expose a different problem. Keep the demo’s own store and Library entries as your starting points each time.

There is no authoritative published percentage for how many Steam demos work on Steam Deck. Valve’s review is ongoing, and ProtonDB’s report totals change over time; neither figure is a demo-success rate. The useful result for your decision is the demo’s current Valve label plus your own complete-session test.
A practical decision rule
- Verified plus a clean full test: use the demo normally, while remembering that later updates can change the result.
- Playable plus an acceptable adjustment: keep the workaround documented and decide whether the extra step is reasonable each launch.
- Unknown plus a clean full test: the demo works in your configuration, but the result is based on your test and community evidence rather than Valve certification.
- Unsupported or a failed full test: treat the demo as unreliable for your Deck unless a specific, repeatable Proton or control change resolves every blocking criterion.
This process answers the question that a badge alone cannot: not merely whether the demo starts, but whether you can launch, control, read, hear, save, suspend, and finish a normal session on your particular Steam Deck.
