Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo check whether a Secret Lair card is authentic, inspect it without damaging it and compare its printing, edges, finish, and texture with a known genuine card from the same printing. Wizards of the Coast’s counterfeit advice applies to Magic cards generally; it does not provide a separate Secret Lair authentication checklist. No single visual check proves a card is genuine.
How to inspect a Secret Lair card safely
-
Find a like-for-like reference
Compare the suspect card with a known genuine card from the same printing, where possible. Magic printings can vary, so a color or finish difference between cards from different printings is not proof of counterfeiting. Wizards explains this general comparison approach in “Buyer Beware”.
-
Examine print quality and edges
Look closely at colored lettering and symbols for bleeding or inconsistent edges. A magnifier can reveal print patterns or irregularities that are hard to see unaided, but it is only an inspection aid—not an authentication instrument. In the general Magic guidance, author Mike Elliott points to the black/red edge of the word “Magic” on a card back as one place to inspect for print quality; that observation is not a Secret Lair-specific test.
-
Check the card as a whole
Consider color, edge quality, gloss, texture, and signs of wear together. Counterfeits may handle wear differently, but none of these clues establishes authenticity on its own. Special treatments can also differ from ordinary set printing, so compare against the closest genuine match you can find.

Use light only as a controlled comparison
For a nonfoil card, compare how much light passes through it with how much passes through a known genuine card under the same conditions. Treat any difference as a clue to investigate, not a verdict.
Which checks to avoid
Do not bend, wet, or tear a potentially valuable card as a routine test. Wizards warns that repeated bending can crease genuine cards and says not to use the bend test on foils. Its water test can affect a card and is unsuitable for foils; tearing is destructive. These risks outweigh the value of an informal home test.

What is—and is not—established for Secret Lair
Secret Lair is an official Wizards of the Coast Magic product line, described in the company’s 2019 Secret Lair recap. The cited counterfeit guidance is general Magic advice, not a current Secret Lair-specific procedure. It does not identify a Secret Lair security mark or establish that a particular stamp, foil pattern, package, or other feature proves a card is genuine. Avoid relying on claims about such a feature unless current official documentation supports them.

If careful, non-destructive comparison still leaves you uncertain, ask an experienced Magic card dealer or retailer to inspect the card. That can provide a useful informed opinion, not formal certification. Wizards says its employees are not permitted to consult on individual authenticity questions.

- Well look who it is! Come in, come in. Don’t mind the robe. “Uncle Deadpool” is just crashing at Secret Lair for a few days. I’m actually doing a little tour of lairs, hideouts, sanctums, and strongholds and leaving ratings online. It’s been a blast.
- But I wasn’t expecting guests. Just, uh, kick back, relax, and . . . don’t sit on my red suit! It’s drying out. But check this out—Secret Lair made me my own Deadpool cards! Isn’t that nice?
