The definitive check happens on your PS5: open the game’s hub from Game Library, PlayStation Store, or Search. An eligible title shows an Upgrade offer. Open that offer to see whether Sony lists the PS5 version as free, discounted, full-price, or unavailable. The offer text for your account, edition, and region is the answer for that title.
For a disc copy, you need a PS5 console with a disc drive, the disc must match your PlayStation account’s country or region, and you must keep the disc inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version. Digital owners must sign in with the account that owns the game. PlayStation Plus copies generally do not qualify unless Sony specifically says they do.
Use the game hub as the authoritative check
Sony describes the feature this way: “Certain PlayStation®4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation®5 version of the game on a PS5® console.” That wording is deliberately conditional. A PS4 release is not automatically entitled to a free PS5 release, and the rules can differ by title, ownership type, country, and time.

On your PS5, find the game in Game Library, or search for it in the PlayStation Store or with the console’s Search function. Open the game’s hub and look for Upgrade offer. Select it before downloading anything. The resulting page identifies the PS5 edition and displays the applicable price and terms for your account.

- No offer: the account, copy, region, hardware, or title may not meet the requirements, the offer may have expired, or the game may not have a native PS5 version.
Sony notes that an upgrade may be available at no additional cost, may require a purchase, or may be limited to a particular period. Treat the current game-hub screen—not an old launch article, a retailer description, or another player’s result—as the title-specific decision.
Identify your copy and console before you start
The path differs depending on whether you own a disc or a digital license. The PS5 model also matters because the PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs.
| What you own | Console requirement | Account requirement | What you must do to play the PS5 download |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical PS4 disc | PS5 with a disc drive | Sign in to your PlayStation account; the disc’s country or region must match the account | Keep the qualifying disc inserted every time you launch the downloaded PS5 version |
| Digital PS4 purchase | Either PS5 model | Sign in with the account that owns the digital license | Download or purchase the PS5 version shown in the game hub |
| PS4 game redeemed through PlayStation Plus | Check the game hub on your PS5 | The Plus entitlement must be recognized; Sony generally excludes these copies unless it states an exception | Only use the upgrade if Sony explicitly lists an exception for that title |
These categories are important because the same game can show different choices for a disc owner, a digital buyer, and someone who claimed it as a PlayStation Plus benefit.

Check a physical PS4 disc for a free upgrade
Use this procedure when your PS4 game is on a Blu-ray disc. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot authenticate the disc and cannot use this upgrade route.
- Confirm the hardware. Make sure the console is a PS5 model with a disc drive. If your console is the PS5 Digital Edition, a PS4 disc cannot be used for the upgrade.
- Sign in to the right account. Log in to the PlayStation account you intend to use for the game. The account’s country or region must match the disc’s country or region.
- Insert the eligible PS4 disc. Wait for the console to recognize the game, then open that game’s hub from the home screen or Game Library. You can also locate the title through PlayStation Store or Search while the disc is inserted.
- Open Upgrade offer. Select the offer rather than the standard PS4 download. Read the displayed price, edition, expiry information, and any other terms.
- Claim or buy the PS5 version. Choose Download when the price is free. If the offer shows a discounted or full price, you can purchase it at that amount if you accept the terms.
- Keep the disc available. The PS5 download is digital, but the physical disc remains the license check. Insert it every time you play the PS5 version; owning the download does not remove this requirement.
If the offer is not visible after inserting the disc, do not assume the game is unsupported. First verify the disc region, the signed-in account, the console’s disc-drive model, and whether the title still has an active PS5 offer.

Check a digital PS4 purchase
Digital ownership removes the disc-drive and disc-region checks, but the account-license check becomes essential.
- Use the purchasing account. Sign in to the PlayStation account that bought the PS4 game. A different local user may not see the entitlement even when the console has the game installed.
- Find the PS5 edition. Open PlayStation Store or Search and locate the game. Select the result that leads to the title’s game hub, not merely the installed PS4 application.
- Choose Upgrade offer. Open the offer and read the price and conditions. The listing may identify a no-cost, discounted, or paid upgrade, or it may show no upgrade at all.
- Complete the displayed action. Select Download when the offer is free. If a price appears, decide whether to purchase it; the price shown for your account is the applicable one.
After claiming the PS5 edition, check that you launch the PS5 version rather than the PS4 version. The two versions can appear together in Game Library, and backward-compatible play of the PS4 release is a different outcome from owning a native PS5 build.
What “free PS5 upgrade” actually means
“Free” describes the price of the upgrade transaction, not a promise that every PS4 owner receives a new version. Sony’s current support wording says the upgrade may be free, may require a purchase, or may be available only for a limited time. Those conditions can be specific to a title and territory.
| Game-hub result | Meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade offer, no charge | A no-additional-cost PS5 digital entitlement is offered under the terms shown | Read the terms and select Download or the equivalent claim button |
| Upgrade offer with a lower price | The PS5 version is available at a discount, not for free | Review the amount and any expiry date before purchasing |
| Upgrade offer at the standard price | A PS5 version exists, but your copy does not receive a free entitlement | Buy it only if the displayed price and terms suit you |
| No Upgrade offer | No applicable upgrade is currently presented for this account and copy | Run the ownership, region, hardware, Plus, and availability checks below |
An offer can also be time-limited. If the game-hub text gives an end date or says the promotion is available for a limited time, claim it before that period ends. A purchase made during a discount may have different conditions from a no-cost launch offer, so preserve the exact terms shown on your screen.
Do not confuse PS5 compatibility with a PS5 upgrade
Backward compatibility lets a PS4 game run on a PS5 without converting it into a native PS5 product. Sony’s 2020 launch FAQ said that more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5. That broad compatibility statistic does not establish that any particular game has a free PS5 upgrade.

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, Disc Drive, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold separately
There are therefore two separate outcomes:
- Native PS5 version: a PS5 edition is offered in the game hub. It may be free, discounted, or paid, and it may include an upgrade-specific download.
- PS4 version running on PS5: the original PS4 software remains the version you play through backward compatibility. It can be playable even when no native PS5 edition or upgrade offer exists.
Sony’s launch FAQ used Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure as examples of PS4 games whose versions offered no-additional-cost PS5 upgrades at launch. Those are historical examples, not a standing guarantee for today. Check the current game hub for the title you own.
Why a PS4 game may show no upgrade offer
The console cannot read the disc
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot authenticate physical media, so no disc-based upgrade can be claimed on that hardware. Use a PS5 with a disc drive or obtain a digital license if the publisher offers one.
You are signed in to the wrong account
Digital upgrades attach to the account that owns the PS4 license. Sign out of any account that does not own the game and return to the purchasing account before checking the game hub again.
The disc and account regions do not match
For physical upgrades, Sony requires the disc to be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account. A disc imported from another market can install or run as a PS4 game yet fail to display the matching upgrade offer. Verify the disc’s regional origin and the account’s country or region rather than relying on the game’s language or packaging alone.
The copy came from PlayStation Plus
PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless Sony specifically indicates otherwise. A Plus library entry therefore should not be treated as equivalent to a separately purchased digital license.

The title has no native PS5 version
Some PS4 games remain playable through backward compatibility without a separate PS5 edition. Search for the game in PlayStation Store and inspect its hub. If there is no PS5 product or Upgrade offer, the compatible PS4 version may be the only supported option.
The offer expired or requires payment
Read every line of the offer page for an expiry date, a purchase requirement, or a territory restriction. A launch promotion can end while the PS4 game remains playable on PS5. Likewise, an offer that once appeared as free may now show a price, depending on the terms Sony currently lists.
A quick decision path
Use this sequence when you need an answer without guessing:
- Open the game hub on PS5. Start in Game Library, PlayStation Store, or Search.
- Look for Upgrade offer. If it appears, open it and read the price and terms.
- If the price is zero, claim and download the PS5 version.
- If a price appears, decide whether the discounted or full-price purchase is worthwhile; it is not a free upgrade.
- If no offer appears, identify whether your copy is a disc, a purchased digital license, or a PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- For a disc, verify the PS5 has a disc drive and that disc and account regions match.
- For digital ownership, switch to the account that bought the game and search specifically for the PS5 edition.
- For a Plus copy, look for an explicit Sony exception.
- If none of those checks changes the result, use the PS4 version through backward compatibility if the title is supported.
What to expect after claiming the upgrade
The upgrade described here is to a digital PS5 version. A physical PS4 owner still needs the original disc as an access key, even after the PS5 data has been downloaded. A digital owner’s access is tied to the purchasing account. Keep those license conditions in mind when sharing a console, changing users, or disposing of the original disc.
Downloading a PS5 edition also does not erase the distinction between the two versions in Game Library. When both entries are installed, select the PS5 version if that is the edition you claimed; selecting the PS4 entry simply launches the backward-compatible release.
Key points to verify before you spend money
- The game hub shows an actual Upgrade offer, not just a PS4 listing.
- The displayed amount is zero if you expect a free upgrade.
- A disc owner has a PS5 with a disc drive and a disc from the account’s country or region.
- A digital owner is signed in with the account that purchased the PS4 game.
- A PlayStation Plus copy has an explicit exception if it is eligible.
- The offer has not expired and does not impose a purchase condition.
- You understand whether you are downloading a native PS5 version or simply playing the PS4 version through backward compatibility.
Following those checks prevents the most common mistake: treating PS4 playability on PS5 as proof of a free PS5 upgrade. The only reliable answer for a specific game is the current Upgrade offer and its terms in that game’s PS5 hub.
