The reliable way to judge a new Steam action-adventure game is to compare your PC’s complete hardware and operating system with the game’s minimum and recommended specifications, then test an actual session. Meeting minimum requirements only means the game may launch; it does not promise a steady frame rate, short loading times or trouble-free play.
Use the game’s Steam Store requirements as a starting point, verify every component rather than a processor or graphics-card family name, and keep the first play session inside Steam’s refund window if performance is uncertain.
Define what “run well” means for your game
“Run” can mean that a title opens and reaches its menu. “Run well” is a higher standard: the game should maintain consistent frame pacing at your chosen resolution, avoid severe stutter, load acceptably and remain responsive during the busiest combat scenes. A requirements table cannot establish a particular frames-per-second target because developers publish estimates, not a universal performance guarantee.

1. Record your PC’s exact specifications
Write down the full model name and current software state before opening the game’s Store page. “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5” or “RTX” identifies a broad family, not one performance level. A complete comparison needs the specific model, laptop variant where applicable, installed memory, graphics adapter, operating system and available disk space.
Windows processor, memory and operating-system details
- Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor line, installed RAM and Windows edition and version.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and record the CPU and Memory details. Select each GPU entry as well; some systems list integrated and discrete adapters separately.
- If the model name is abbreviated, open System Information from the Start menu or run
dxdiagand save the complete processor and display-device names shown there.
For a laptop, note whether the game is expected to use integrated graphics or a discrete GPU. Also record whether the machine is plugged in and using its normal performance power mode. Mobile graphics chips with similar names can perform very differently because of power and cooling limits.
Check usable storage, not just the drive’s advertised capacity
Open File Explorer > This PC and record the free space on the drive where you will install the game. Steam’s listed storage figure is a capacity requirement, not a promise about loading speed. Leave room for Windows, shader caches, saved data, patches and temporary installation files; a drive that is technically large enough can still cause update or caching problems when nearly full.

Steam’s guidance is straightforward: “The system requirements for all games are listed on the game’s Store page.” Open the exact title’s Store page and scroll to System Requirements. Capture both the Minimum and Recommended rows before buying or installing.

- Processor (CPU) model
- Graphics adapter (GPU) model
- Installed RAM
- Operating-system version or family
- DirectX or another required graphics API
- Storage capacity
Steam also instructs users to check the compatible operating systems in this section. Requirements can change after patches, so recheck the Store page if the game receives a major update or if an earlier comparison no longer matches your installed version.
3. Compare component by component
Make two separate comparisons: your PC against Minimum, and your PC against Recommended. Do not decide from one impressive component. A fast graphics card cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system, insufficient memory or a processor below the listed floor.

Minimum is a floor, not a smooth-play promise
Steam warns that a machine “at or near system requirements may experience performance or launch issues.” Treat the Minimum row as the developer’s lowest stated configuration for attempting to run the game. It does not establish a frame-rate target, image-quality setting or stable frame pacing.
If one major part of your system is below Minimum, classify the result as high risk. The game may fail to launch, require compromises that make it unpleasant, or behave differently after an update. Do not assume that exceeding the minimum GPU makes up for a below-minimum CPU or RAM amount.
Recommended is a safer starting point
Recommended hardware is the better target for someone who wants to begin without immediately lowering visual settings. It is still not a guarantee: resolution, ray-tracing features, background software, drivers and later patches affect the result. A PC that meets Recommended on paper should still be validated in a real session.

Use a simple risk classification

4. Check operating-system and platform compatibility separately
Operating-system support is an independent gate. A powerful PC can still be unsupported if its Windows version or other platform is absent from the game’s listed compatibility information. Verify the exact version shown on your computer against the Store page instead of assuming that any modern Windows installation qualifies.
Linux and Steam Play users need an additional check. A game may list Windows requirements while its practical Linux behavior depends on the current Proton version, game updates and community reports. Confirm that the title works with your intended Steam Play configuration before treating the Windows hardware comparison as conclusive.
Do not overlook the graphics API line. A card can have enough theoretical performance yet lack the DirectX feature level or driver support the game expects. Update the operating system and graphics driver only after recording your current state, so you can identify what changed.
5. Test a real session before committing to the game
Requirements are estimates. The only meaningful confirmation is to play a representative section: an open area, a combat encounter and a transition or loading sequence if possible. Start with the game’s intended resolution and a sensible preset instead of immediately choosing the highest settings.
Enable Steam’s in-game performance monitor
- In the Steam desktop client, open Settings > In Game and enable the performance-monitor or performance-overlay option available in your client version.
- Launch the game and open the Steam overlay with Shift+Tab. Position the performance display where it will not obscure important play.
- Play for at least one representative session rather than judging the title from its menu or opening cutscene.
- Record the qualitative experience along with the displayed data: average feel, sudden frame-time spikes, traversal stutter, loading behavior and input responsiveness.
Steam’s documented monitor includes frame-performance information, including minimum and maximum single-game frame performance within one-second intervals, plus memory context. A high peak number is less useful than consistent delivery; frequent drops and spikes are what make camera movement or combat feel uneven.

Identify the limiting resource
- GPU-limited behavior: Lower resolution, shadow quality, effects or ray-tracing features one at a time and see whether frame pacing improves.
- CPU-limited behavior: Lower settings that affect simulation, crowds or view distance, and check whether background processes are consuming processor time.
- Memory pressure: Close large applications, watch for swapping and retest. A system can meet the listed RAM number while losing responsiveness to other software.
- Storage or streaming problems: Check free space and loading behavior, especially when the game streams a large world.
These observations tell you whether a settings adjustment addresses the bottleneck or merely lowers image quality without fixing the cause.

Change one variable at a time and repeat the same scene or route. That makes it possible to identify the cause instead of combining several unmeasured changes.
Reduce background load
Close heavy browsers, recording tools, launchers and other applications before testing. Check Task Manager for processes using substantial CPU, GPU or memory. If the game improves after closing one application, that is evidence of contention rather than proof that your hardware meets a higher requirement.
Check heat, ventilation and clock behavior
Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance recommends monitoring CPU speed and investigating heat, ventilation and memory-related swapping. Ensure laptop vents are unobstructed, use the manufacturer’s normal performance mode when plugged in, and watch whether CPU or GPU clocks fall after the system warms up. A brief smooth opening followed by sustained stutter can indicate thermal throttling rather than an incorrect requirements comparison.

Install a current driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel, restart the PC and repeat the same test. If a new driver creates a problem, record the version and use the vendor’s supported rollback procedure. Do not treat a driver update as a replacement for missing hardware capability.

Separate patch issues from hardware limits
Check the game’s current patch notes and Steam announcements when behavior changes suddenly. Developers can alter requirements or performance characteristics after release. If a patch causes the problem, a settings change may not be a durable fix; document the version and test again after an official update.
7. Decide whether to keep, tune or return the game

Steam’s refund window for a low-risk test
Steam’s published rule generally allows a refund when the request is made within 14 days of purchase and the game has less than two hours of playtime. Submit the request through Steam Support while both conditions still apply. The policy has exceptions, including regional consumer rights and some pre-release situations, so read the current policy response for your account and purchase type.
Because troubleshooting can consume playtime, start with a short, focused test instead of spending hours configuring graphics before deciding whether the game is acceptable.

How to compare two games or graphics presets
When two real options compete for your time or hardware budget, compare the factors that affect the experience rather than choosing the title with the higher headline FPS claim.

Common mistakes that produce a false “yes”
- Comparing only “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5” or “RTX” instead of the complete model.
- Checking the desktop GPU name while the laptop actually launches the game on integrated graphics.
- Treating Minimum as a promise of smooth play or a specific frame rate.
- Ignoring the operating-system and API lines because the hardware looks powerful.
- Measuring a menu, cutscene or short opening instead of a busy gameplay section.
- Filling a drive to its limit because the game’s storage number fits exactly.
- Changing drivers, presets and background applications simultaneously, making the result impossible to diagnose.
- Assuming a cleanup or optimization utility can replace a missing CPU, GPU or RAM capability. Such software may reduce background-process or disk-space problems on a supported Windows installation, but it cannot make unsupported hardware meet the developer’s requirements.
A reusable checklist
- Record the full CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version and free storage.
- Open the game’s Steam Store page and copy Minimum and Recommended requirements, including API and OS.
- Compare every component separately; classify any below-Minimum part as high risk.
- Confirm the operating-system and platform gate, including Proton or Steam Play considerations where relevant.
- Start at the intended resolution and a sensible preset, then enable Steam’s performance monitor.
- Play a representative section and note frame-time consistency, stutter, loading, temperatures and memory pressure.
- Close background applications, check ventilation and CPU clocks, update the GPU driver and retest one change at a time.
- Keep the game if the experience is acceptable; otherwise use Steam Support promptly while the published refund conditions still apply.
