To check a card, find every printing of its card name, see whether at least one printing is in Planar Standard’s current seven-set pool, and then check the ban list. Planar Standard currently consists of Foundations (FDN) plus DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, and FRA. Its reprint rule means that once any printing of a card name is in a legal set, any printing of that card may be played—unless the card is banned. For a complete deck, also run the list through the Planar Standard checker and confirm the 60-card minimum, 15-card sideboard maximum, and four-copy limit.
The quickest reliable legality check
Use this sequence whenever you are unsure about a card or deck:
- Identify the exact card name. Check spelling, alternate names, and whether you are looking at a token, emblem, or an actual card.
- Inspect all printings. Search Gatherer, which Wizards of the Coast describes as “the official Magic Card Database,” or another database that lists a card’s complete printing history. A card’s frame, artwork, collector number, and expansion symbol can differ between printings.
- Compare the printings with the live Planar Standard pool. The current pool is Foundations (
FDN),DFT,TDM,EOE,ECL,SOS, andFRA. - Apply the reprint rule. If any printing of that card name appears in one of those legal sets, all printings of that name are playable in Planar Standard.
- Check the ban list. A card in a legal set is still illegal if it is currently banned. The current Planar Standard list names Cori-Steel Cutter as banned.
- Validate the deck. Paste the complete list into the Planar Standard card-list checker. The checker does not require an account, but you still need to correct deck-size, sideboard, and copy-count errors it identifies.
This process separates three questions that are often confused: whether the card name has a legal printing, whether the card is banned, and whether the entire deck meets construction rules.
What sets are legal in Planar Standard now?
The current Planar Standard environment contains seven sets: one Core set and six rotating sets. Use the set code shown in deck lists and card databases when matching a printing.

“Current” matters because Planar Standard is a rotating format. The rules page’s live list, rather than a static article or an old deck guide, is the controlling reference for which sets are in the pool. If a card database marks a set as Standard-legal in another format, do not assume that status carries over to Planar Standard.
How the reprint rule makes older printings legal
Planar Standard’s rule is explicit: A card is legal if any printing of it is in a legal set, and then any printing of it may be played.
Legality is therefore effectively based on the card name after a qualifying reprint, not on the expansion symbol printed on the physical copy you own.
Example: Llanowar Elves
The Planar Standard rules page uses Llanowar Elves (M19) as its example. If Llanowar Elves appears in Foundations, the M19 printing is playable even though M19 is not one of the current seven sets. You do not need to replace an older copy with a Foundations copy solely for format legality.

How to apply the rule to any card
- Search the card name and open its printing list.
- Look for at least one printing whose set code is
FDN,DFT,TDM,EOE,ECL,SOS, orFRA. - If one exists, mark every printing of that card name as eligible for Planar Standard play.
- Then check the current ban list. The reprint rule does not override a ban.
This also explains why a deck checker may accept a card whose visible expansion symbol is from an older set. The checker is recognizing the legal-set printing of the same card name.
Check bans separately
Set legality and ban legality are independent tests. The current Planar Standard ban list names Cori-Steel Cutter. If a deck contains that card, changing to an older printing or proving that another printing is in a legal set will not make it legal.

Always read the ban list on the Planar Standard rules page at the same time you check the set pool. Community format pages can be updated through format announcements, so a saved decklist or a search result from an earlier date can be stale.
How to check a complete deck
For a single card, the printing-and-ban procedure is enough. For a tournament-ready deck, use the Planar Standard checker after you have assembled the list.
Paste the list into the checker
- Open the Planar Standard card-list checker.
- Paste the deck list in its usual text format, with card names and quantities. Include the sideboard separately if the checker provides separate sections.
- Run the check. The page states that no account is required.
- Read each rejected card name rather than assuming every error has the same cause. A rejection can indicate an unknown card name, a missing legal printing, a ban, or a deck-construction violation.
- Correct the list and run it again until the checker reports no legality or construction errors.
Construction limits to verify
| Deck component or rule | Planar Standard requirement |
|---|---|
| Maindeck | At least 60 cards |
| Sideboard | No more than 15 cards |
| Copies of a card name | Up to four copies across maindeck and sideboard |
| Basic lands | Exempt from the four-copy limit |
The four-copy rule counts a card name across both sections. For example, four copies in the maindeck leave no additional copies for the sideboard; two in the maindeck and two in the sideboard use the full allowance. Basic lands are the stated exception.
What the checker cannot replace
A checker is a practical validation tool, not a substitute for understanding the format rules. If a card is newly printed, newly banned, or listed under an unusual card-name treatment, compare the result with the current Planar Standard rules page and the card’s complete printing record. Keep the exact set code and card name when reporting a problem; those details make it possible to distinguish a data-entry error from a real legality issue.
Planar Standard is not the same as Wizards-sanctioned Standard
Planar Standard has its own set pool, ban list, and deck rules. Wizards’ sanctioned Standard is governed by the Magic Tournament Rules (MTR), so a card can be legal in one format and not the other.

It also allows older cards that share a name with a Standard-legal card. Those provisions are useful context for understanding official Standard, but they do not replace Planar Standard’s live rules page.

Understand rotation before relying on an old legality answer
Planar Standard rotation follows the first Universes Within set release of each year. When that rotation occurs, the previous year’s Universes Within sets leave the format. A card can therefore be legal today and illegal after rotation even if you have not changed the physical copy.
The reprint rule still applies after rotation: if the card name appears in any set that remains legal, older printings can be used. Rotation removes sets from the pool; it does not permanently invalidate every older copy of a card that has been reprinted into a surviving set.
Because the rotation trigger is tied to the first Universes Within release of the year, check the current rules page around that release rather than relying on a calendar shortcut. A deck guide that names the seven-set pool before the latest rotation may contain cards that are no longer eligible.

Troubleshoot a rejected card or deck
The checker rejects an older printing
Search the card name, not only the expansion symbol on the copy you entered. Confirm that the same name has a printing in FDN, DFT, TDM, EOE, ECL, SOS, or FRA. If it does, the reprint rule should allow the older copy unless the card is banned. If the card database treats two versions as different names, check the exact printed name and any official name change before substituting one for the other.
The card has a legal-set printing but is still rejected
Check Cori-Steel Cutter first, then reread the current ban list for additions or removals. Next, inspect the deck count: a legal card can still trigger an error when the list has more than four copies of its name across the maindeck and sideboard, fewer than 60 maindeck cards, or more than 15 sideboard cards.
The set code looks unfamiliar
Do not infer legality from artwork, rarity, a product name, or a marketplace listing. Match the database’s set code against the seven codes in the current pool. If the code is not one of them, look for another printing of the same card name before concluding that the card is illegal.
A deck list passes in another Standard checker but fails here
That is usually an authority mismatch rather than a software defect. Confirm that the other checker is validating Planar Standard, not Wizards-sanctioned Standard or a different community format. Compare its set list and ban list with the current Planar Standard rules page.

The checker does not recognize a card name
Retype the name exactly as it appears in the card database, remove accidental set codes or collector numbers, and separate quantity from the name in the format the checker expects. Then verify whether the card is a real card rather than a token, emblem, or other game object that cannot be included in a deck.

Choosing the right verification method
No single page answers every legality question. Use the source that matches the uncertainty.
| Method | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Planar Standard rules page | Final decision on legal sets, bans, rotation, deck limits, and the paste-in checker | Community-maintained; updates can arrive through community announcements. |
| Gatherer | Finding every printing and reading official card rulings | It does not itself define the Planar Standard pool. |
| Magic Tournament Rules | Checking sanctioned Wizards Standard policy | It governs official Standard, not Planar Standard. |
For a difficult case, use them in that order: establish the Planar Standard rule, use Gatherer to identify the relevant printing, and consult the MTR only when you are comparing the community format with sanctioned Standard.
Worked decision examples
An old copy of a reprinted card
You own a card with an older expansion symbol. Its name also appears in Foundations. The old expansion is not in the current seven-set list, but the Foundations printing qualifies the card name. The old copy is legal unless the ban list names that card.
A card from a legal set that is banned
Your database shows a DFT printing, but the card is Cori-Steel Cutter. The set test succeeds and the ban test fails, so the card cannot be played in Planar Standard.
A deck with too many copies split between sections
A list contains three copies of a card in the maindeck and two in the sideboard. The total is five copies of one card name, so the deck exceeds the four-copy limit even though neither section alone exceeds four.
A deck with 58 maindeck cards
Every card may be individually legal, but the list is not a legal deck because the maindeck minimum is 60 cards. Add cards that also pass the set, ban, and copy-count checks, then rerun the checker.
Quick Recap
Final pre-event checklist
- Confirm that you are checking Planar Standard rather than sanctioned Standard.
- Use the current seven-set pool:
FDN,DFT,TDM,EOE,ECL,SOS, andFRA. - Search every card name’s printing history.
- Apply the rule that any legal printing makes every printing of that name playable.
- Check the current ban list, including Cori-Steel Cutter.
- Paste the entire list into the no-account Planar Standard checker.
- Verify at least 60 maindeck cards, no more than 15 sideboard cards, and no more than four copies of any non-basic-land card name across both sections.
