Do not connect or fund a Ledger hardware wallet that arrives opened, altered, pre-initialized, or with a recovery phrase or PIN. Check where it came from, inspect the package, install Ledger Wallet only from an official channel, and complete Genuine Check during initialization. Those steps are essential for detecting counterfeit devices and unauthorized firmware, but they cannot prove that an otherwise genuine Secure Element has no hidden physical modification. If anything looks wrong, leave the device disconnected and ask Ledger Support for instructions.
Make the decision before you plug it in
Treat tamper checking as a sequence of controls rather than a single visual test. A device is suitable to initialize only when its purchase trail is credible, its package and contents are normal, the software came from Ledger, and Genuine Check succeeds. A hologram, shrink-wrap, or an intact-looking box is not enough on its own.
- Stop immediately: the parcel or box appears opened, resealed, altered, or compromised; the device has a supplied PIN; or a recovery phrase is already written down.
- Continue cautiously: the package is normal, the device is blank, and you obtained Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official website or the official iOS or Android store.
- Do not rely on one result: a successful Genuine Check detects many counterfeits and firmware problems, but it is not a complete inspection for hidden hardware implants.
Ledger says: “Should you receive a package that appears opened, altered, or compromised from any authorised reseller—including Amazon—do not use the device and contact Ledger Support immediately.” Keep that rule in force even if the seller says the box was opened for quality control or the device later passes a software check.

Supply-chain provenance is your first practical defense. Buy from Ledger.com or from a reseller listed in Ledger’s authorized-reseller information for your country. The useful question is not simply whether a product page carries the Ledger name; it is which legal seller will ship the particular unit and handle a return.

| Purchase route | What to verify | What to do if verification fails |
|---|---|---|
| Ledger.com | Use the regional Ledger site and retain the order confirmation and shipping record. | Do not initialize a device whose parcel is damaged or whose contents differ from the order; contact Ledger Support. |
| Authorized reseller | Confirm that the business appears on Ledger’s current authorized-reseller list for your country. Check that the invoice and return policy identify the same business. | Ask the reseller to replace a questionable unit, but follow Ledger’s instruction not to use an opened or compromised package. |
| Amazon | Inspect the product page’s Sold by field, not only the “Fulfilled by” or marketplace branding. Match the named seller to Ledger’s official storefront or authorized-reseller information. | Do not assume a popular listing is a single inventory pool. Photograph the condition, preserve the packaging, and use the seller and Ledger support channels. |
| Unknown marketplace, auction, social-media seller, or unsolicited shipment | There may be no dependable chain of custody, even when the item is described as new. | Do not connect it or enter any secret. Request a refund through the marketplace and ask Ledger Support whether the unit should be returned. |
Marketplace pages can combine offers from multiple sellers under one product description. Re-check the seller at checkout and on the order confirmation; a change in the seller field is a reason to cancel rather than a minor administrative detail.
Inspect the package without opening the device
Examine the shipping carton, retail box, inner trays, labels, and accessories in good light. Photograph anything unusual before removing it. Look for torn or lifted cardboard, cut tape, glue residue, mismatched fonts or labels, missing inserts, a device that is already powered on, and accessories that appear substituted. Compare the contents with the model and regional package description supplied by Ledger.
Do not open the hardware to “look for a chip.” Opening it can destroy evidence, create new damage, and make a return or support investigation harder. Ledger Support should tell you if disassembly is appropriate.

Why seals are weak evidence
Classic tamper seals and holographic stickers can be copied or bypassed. Ledger Donjon puts it plainly: “Classic anti-tampering seals (or holographic seals) can give a false sense of security: not only are they trivial to clone, but it is also easy to open and close a package without damaging the seal.” An intact seal therefore does not override a suspicious seller, an altered box, or an abnormal setup screen. Conversely, a legitimate package can acquire shipping damage; when the condition is ambiguous, the safe action is still to stop and obtain a decision from Ledger Support rather than guessing.
Check the initialization for stop signals
A legitimate Ledger hardware wallet is not delivered with a usable wallet already created for you. During setup, the device must generate a new recovery phrase and show it on its own screen so that you write it down. The seller, a card in the box, an email, or a support agent must never supply that phrase.
- Prewritten recovery phrase: treat it as exposed. Do not import it, test it with a small deposit, or “verify” it in an app.
- Supplied PIN: a seller-provided PIN means someone else may have initialized or configured the device. Stop.
- Recovery phrase requested by software or support: close the prompt and end the interaction. Ledger says, “Furthermore, a genuine Ledger signer never asks you to enter your recovery phrase on a computer, phone, app, or website.”
- Unexpected wallet balances: a device that opens to an existing account is not a normal new-device state. Do not transfer funds to or from it.
- Pressure to act quickly: urgency, a claim that your account is locked, or a request to scan a seller-provided QR code is a social-engineering warning.
Your recovery phrase is the master authorization for the assets controlled by that wallet. Never type it into Ledger Wallet, a desktop computer, phone, browser, website, ticket form, or chat. The only normal place to enter a phrase is the physical input flow on a trusted hardware wallet when recovering a wallet you intentionally control; a phrase that arrived from someone else should not be recovered at all.
Install only authentic Ledger Wallet software
Download Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official website or from the official Apple App Store or Google Play listing. Confirm the publisher and spelling before installing. Avoid an installer, browser extension, TestFlight build, or mobile package supplied by a seller, an alleged support representative, a QR code in the box, or an unsolicited message. Bookmark the official site yourself instead of following a shortened link.

A genuine-looking application is not a substitute for provenance. Software obtained from a counterfeit support page can display reassuring text while collecting secrets, so the download path matters as much as the screen result.
Run Genuine Check during initialization
Genuine Check is Ledger’s cryptographic authenticity test. In Ledger’s provisioning process, each device receives a unique device key pair and a Ledger-signed issuer certificate. Ledger Wallet sends a challenge through the normal connection. The Secure Element signs that challenge with its device key, and Ledger’s servers verify the signature and certificate. This attestation lets the software reject clones and devices running rogue or modified firmware.
- Start a new-device setup in the official Ledger Wallet application.
- Follow the on-screen connection and initialization prompts; do not skip an authenticity warning.
- Allow Ledger Wallet to perform Genuine Check while the device is connected to the internet.
- Read the result in the application. A successful result means the expected Secure Element and attested firmware responded correctly. A failed, unavailable, or inconsistent result means stop using the device and contact Ledger Support; do not attempt repeated unofficial fixes or firmware files.
- After a successful check, let the device generate a fresh recovery phrase on its own screen. Confirm that the words are recorded privately and that no phrase was supplied beforehand.
Ledger Donjon describes the same challenge-response principle: the Secure Element signs a server challenge and the server verifies the attestation. The test is powerful against counterfeit hardware and unauthorized firmware because an attacker would need the device’s protected credentials and a valid Ledger certificate, not merely a copied case or logo.
Know exactly what Genuine Check can and cannot prove
| Question | What the check establishes | What remains outside its guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Is this a Ledger Secure Element? | The device presented a valid Ledger-issued attestation for its Secure Element. | It does not certify every other component, solder joint, wire, connector, or modification inside the enclosure. |
| Is the firmware acceptable? | The attested firmware identity passed Ledger’s verification path. | It does not prove that the physical supply chain was uninterrupted before you received the unit. |
| Could a counterfeit pass? | A clone without the required protected credentials should fail the cryptographic challenge. | A genuine original Secure Element could theoretically remain in a device that has been opened and modified around it. |
| Is the package safe? | Nothing about the software result authenticates seals, inserts, or the seller’s handling. | Package condition and seller identity still require separate judgment and support escalation. |
Ledger Donjon specifically warns: “Note that a Genuine check cannot detect unauthorized physical modifications to the hardware, such as spying implants, if the original Secure Element remains intact.” In other words, a successful check is necessary for a new device but not a complete physical supply-chain inspection.
Understand the physical-tampering scenario
An attacker could open a genuine device after manufacture, add wiring or another component, and close the case without replacing the original Secure Element. A hidden implant designed to observe recovery-phrase entry is the serious case Ledger describes in its implant response. Because the original attestation credentials can remain present, cryptographic Genuine Check may still pass.
This is why visual inspection has a limited role. Look for case gaps, displaced buttons, unusual screws, residue, or marks around seams, but do not treat the absence of such marks as certification. Do not disassemble the unit yourself. The combination that gives the strongest practical protection is a trusted seller, an apparently untouched package, official software, a successful Genuine Check, and a recovery phrase generated privately during setup.
Ledger’s current buying guidance describes a malicious replacement-device scam in which approximately $78,000 was drained within 30 minutes. Ledger dates that warning to a May 2021 unsolicited-device scam and cites it to show why a surprise replacement or “security upgrade” must not be connected merely because it carries Ledger branding.

What to do when something is suspicious
You have not connected or initialized it
- Leave the device disconnected and do not insert a recovery phrase, PIN, or funds.
- Photograph the box, seals, labels, accessories, and the shipping carton without opening the hardware.
- Preserve the order record, seller name, tracking details, and all messages.
- Contact Ledger Support through Ledger’s official site and follow its return or replacement instructions.
- Use the marketplace’s return process only in a way that preserves the evidence and does not require you to perform a risky setup.
You connected it but entered no secret
Disconnect it, record the exact application message and Genuine Check result, and ask Ledger Support whether the unit should be returned. Do not install firmware from a link sent by a third party, and do not try to make a failed check pass by resetting or repairing the device outside Ledger’s instructions.
A recovery phrase or PIN may already have been exposed
Assume the wallet is compromised. Do not add funds. From a known-clean environment, initialize a replacement Ledger device that you obtained through a trusted channel and let it generate a completely new recovery phrase. Move assets from the potentially exposed accounts to addresses controlled by the new wallet as soon as practical, then review token approvals and connected applications and revoke unnecessary permissions. If the old wallet holds assets that require a particular network or account type, verify the destination address on the new device’s screen before signing. Ask Ledger Support and, where appropriate, your exchange or chain-specific security team for help; never disclose the old or new phrase to them.
This emergency path is different from returning an unopened suspicious package. Returning before setup is reversible and avoids seed exposure. Once a phrase may have been seen, migration protects the assets but cannot make the old phrase secret again.
Buying and returning safely
- Check the authorized seller for your country immediately before purchase, not only when you first researched the product.
- Keep the invoice, seller identity, serial or order information, and unboxing photographs until the device has passed setup.
- Do not buy a “new” device whose price or delivery story depends on bypassing normal returns.
- Never accept a seller’s request to pre-initialize the wallet, test it with their phrase, or send them a screenshot of your phrase or PIN.
- For a suspicious Amazon order, document the Sold by field as well as the listing title; fulfillment by Amazon does not establish that the marketplace seller is Ledger-authorized.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Ledger pass Genuine Check and still be tampered with?
Yes. Genuine Check validates the attested Secure Element and firmware. It is not designed to detect every hidden component or wiring change when the original Secure Element remains intact.
Is an opened Ledger package safe to use?
Do not decide that yourself. Ledger’s instruction is not to use a package that appears opened, altered, or compromised, including one bought through an authorized reseller or Amazon. Keep it disconnected and contact Ledger Support.

Stop. A legitimate new device generates its phrase during setup and displays it on the device. A phrase supplied in the package must be treated as exposed, not imported or tested.
What if support asks for my recovery phrase?
End the conversation. A genuine Ledger signer never needs your phrase for troubleshooting, account recovery, or a refund.

Are holographic stickers proof of authenticity?
No. Donjon says classic and holographic seals can be cloned or bypassed. Use provenance, official software, and Genuine Check together.
Does buying from Amazon make a Ledger counterfeit?
No, but the marketplace can present multiple sellers under one listing. Check the specific Sold by business against Ledger’s authorized-store information and follow the same package and setup checks.
Should I open the case to look for an implant?
No. Photograph the exterior and ask Ledger Support first. Self-disassembly can damage the device and evidence while still failing to reveal a sophisticated modification.
What is the safest response if I already entered a phrase into a computer?
Treat that phrase as compromised, create a new wallet with a newly generated phrase on a trusted hardware device, and transfer assets to it. Do not use the exposed phrase for future storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Ledger pass Genuine Check and still be tampered with?
Yes. Genuine Check validates the attested Secure Element and firmware, not every physical component or hidden implant.
Is an opened Ledger package safe to use?
Do not use it until Ledger Support has advised you. Ledger says an opened, altered, or compromised package should remain unused.
What if a recovery phrase or PIN came in the box?
Stop using the device. A genuine device generates its phrase during setup; a supplied phrase or PIN is a stop signal.
Are holographic seals proof of authenticity?
No. Seals can be cloned or bypassed, so they cannot replace seller verification and Genuine Check.
The Bottom Line
Use a Ledger hardware wallet only when its seller and package are trustworthy, Ledger Wallet is official, Genuine Check succeeds, and the device generates a new recovery phrase during your own setup. Any opened package, supplied secret, failed check, or unexplained physical anomaly warrants disconnection and Ledger Support—not experimentation.
