To find out whether a particular horror game will run on your PC, compare the game’s current system requirements with your computer’s exact operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware and available storage. On Windows, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag) can help you identify key components. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee smooth play or high frame rates.
Will this horror game run on my PC?
There is no single hardware threshold for horror games. Requirements are specific to a game, edition and platform, and may change with updates. Check the current listing for the exact PC version you plan to buy rather than relying on requirements for a different edition or platform.
On Steam, scroll to the game’s System Requirements section. Steam says each game’s Store page lists its requirements; if buying elsewhere, use that seller’s listing or the publisher’s current PC requirements. See Steam’s performance guidance and Steam’s operating-system guidance.
What should I compare in the requirements?
Check every listed minimum and recommended requirement against your PC, not just the graphics card. Requirements can include operating system and architecture, processor, RAM, graphics card, VRAM, graphics API, storage and sometimes other conditions such as networking or sound.

- Operating system: Confirm that your Windows, macOS or Linux version is supported. Check whether the game specifies 64-bit Windows; Steam notes that some games require it.
- Processor and memory: Compare your CPU model and installed RAM with the listed requirements.
- Graphics: Match the GPU model and any stated VRAM or graphics API requirement. A laptop’s product name alone may not identify the GPU inside it.
- Storage: Check that you have enough available space, not merely that the drive’s total capacity is large enough.
Listings can combine several of these constraints. For example, Square Enix’s PC Steam requirements page shows how a specific game may list its operating system, processor, RAM, graphics card, DirectX version, storage and target settings or performance. Its figures apply to that game only, not to horror games as a category.
How do I find my PC’s specifications?
Use DxDiag on Windows
- Open the Windows Run dialog.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. Wait for the DirectX Diagnostic Tool to gather system information. - Select Save All Information… to save a report you can refer to while comparing components.
Capcom’s Windows troubleshooting steps note that a DxDiag report can show the GPU model and VRAM. If you need to confirm an exact component model, check Windows system information and your PC or GPU manufacturer’s documentation.

What if my PC meets minimum but not recommended requirements?
Minimum and recommended specifications are separate thresholds. Steam Support cautions that “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” If your PC meets the minimum but falls short of the recommended specs, lowering graphics settings may help, but it is not a guarantee that every performance or compatibility issue will be resolved. Capcom likewise says that a system below recommended specifications may need lower settings. See Steam’s performance guidance and Capcom’s troubleshooting advice.
Are laptop and integrated graphics enough?
Check the actual graphics hardware against the listing. Steam notes that integrated graphics are generally less powerful than dedicated graphics and can result in lower performance. Capcom also warns that laptop-class and dual-GPU configurations can involve additional support or configuration considerations. Do not assume that a mobile graphics chip performs like a desktop version with a similar name; compare the exact model and consult the PC or GPU manufacturer’s documentation if the model is unclear.

What should I do if one component falls short?
First identify which requirement is unmet. A shortfall in operating-system support, processor, memory, graphics or storage calls for a different response, so there is no sound universal recommendation to buy a particular GPU, RAM kit or new PC for an unnamed game.
- If the PC meets minimum specs but not recommended specs, consider whether reduced graphics settings are an acceptable compromise.
- If the graphics card or memory is below the stated minimum, check whether a compatible upgrade is practical for your specific PC before spending money.
- If the operating system is unsupported, a stronger graphics card will not address that compatibility problem.
Steam notes that graphics-card and memory upgrades can affect gameplay, while Capcom advises lowering settings when a system is below recommended specs. Neither point establishes that an upgrade or settings change will fix every game-specific issue.

Can you rely on a refund if the game does not run?
For games and software applications purchased on Steam, Steam’s standard refund offer is for requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, subject to its terms and exceptions. Valve says purchases made outside Steam, including third-party keys, cannot be refunded by Valve.
