Do not rely on the “PS4” sale label alone. On your PS5, open the game’s PS5 page or game hub in the PlayStation Store, choose Upgrade offer, and read the price and conditions shown for your account. Sony says an upgrade can be free, paid, or available only for a limited time, and that offer is the authoritative answer for that title and account region.
The quickest way to verify a PS5 upgrade
Use the same PlayStation account that will own the game. On a PS5, search for the title in the PlayStation Store, open the PS5 version or game hub, and select Upgrade offer. The screen will identify whether the upgrade costs nothing or requires payment. If it is free, Sony’s flow provides a Download option; if payment is required, it shows the price before you complete the purchase.

This check is title-specific. “Certain PlayStation 4 games can be upgraded to the digital PlayStation 5 version,” according to PlayStation Support, but a discounted PS4 listing by itself is not proof that an upgrade exists. Check the actual offer while signed in to the account that will use the entitlement.

- Your owning account: Sign in to the PlayStation account that will purchase or redeem the game. The offer displayed for a different account may not reflect the entitlement you intend to use.
- A PS5 console: The upgrade flow is presented on PS5 through the PlayStation Store or the game hub. Use the console on which you expect to download the PS5 version.
- The correct ownership type: Know whether the PS4 copy is a purchased digital game, a purchased physical disc, or a game received through a PlayStation Plus benefit. Sony applies different rules to these categories.
- The disc-drive requirement for physical copies: A PS4 disc can be used only with a PS5 that has a disc drive. Sony states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition.
- The disc’s country or region: For a physical upgrade, the disc region must match the country or region of the PlayStation account.
How to check a purchased digital PS4 game
- Sign in to the owning account. Confirm the profile shown on the PS5 is the account that will keep the game. Do not make the decision from a guest profile or another household account.
- Open the PlayStation Store. Use the store on the PS5 and search for the game by its exact title. A sale page that shows only the PS4 edition does not establish upgrade eligibility, so continue to the title’s PS5 page or game hub.
- Open the PS5 version or game hub. Check the edition information carefully. The page may present both PS4 and PS5 versions, or it may take you to a hub where the available versions are listed.
- Select “Upgrade offer.” This is the decisive screen. Read every condition and the displayed price before selecting a purchase or download option.
- Follow the result shown for your account. A free offer leads to Download. A paid offer presents the required purchase at the shown price. If no upgrade offer is displayed, do not assume that buying the discounted PS4 listing will unlock a PS5 copy; the title may not support an upgrade, or the offer may not apply to that account or edition.
- Record any deadline. Sony documents that some upgrades are available only for a limited time. If the offer includes an end date or other time restriction, treat it as part of the purchase decision rather than an incidental message.
The store’s current offer is more reliable than a retailer label, an old screenshot, or a general statement that a publisher supports cross-generation upgrades. Prices and availability can vary by title and account region, so make the decision from the offer shown immediately before purchase.

How to check a physical PS4 disc
A disc upgrade has an extra hardware and ownership check. You cannot use a PS4 disc as the license for a downloaded PS5 game on a PS5 Digital Edition. You need a PS5 model with a disc drive, and you must keep the eligible disc inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version.
- Check the console. Verify that your PS5 has a working disc drive. If it is a PS5 Digital Edition, a PS4 disc cannot be used for this purpose.
- Insert the PS4 disc first. Put the eligible disc into the console before looking for the upgrade. The disc provides the ownership check needed for a physical-copy offer.
- Sign in to the account that will play the game. Use the PlayStation account whose country or region matches the disc’s country or region.
- Open the game hub or Store page. With the disc inserted, find the game on the PS5. Use Search if necessary, then open the title’s game hub or PS5 listing.
- Choose “Upgrade offer.” Read whether Sony offers the PS5 version at no cost, for a fee, or only during a stated period. The wording and price on this screen determine what you receive.
- Download or purchase as shown. Select Download when the offer is free, or complete the displayed purchase when a fee is required.
- Keep the disc inserted for play. The downloaded PS5 version remains tied to the physical entitlement. Insert the same eligible disc each time you start the PS5 version.
If the upgrade does not appear after inserting the disc, first check the account region and the disc’s country or region. A mismatch can prevent the offer from applying even when the title has an upgrade path in another market.
How to interpret the upgrade offer
Sony identifies three broad possibilities: no additional cost, a purchase required, or an offer available for a limited time. The wording on the offer screen is more important than the PS4 sale price.
| Offer shown on the PS5 page | What it means for your decision | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Free upgrade with a Download option | The account or eligible disc qualifies for the digital PS5 version without an additional upgrade charge. | Choose Download and keep the required entitlement. For a disc, leave the disc inserted when playing. |
| Upgrade available at a displayed price | The PS4 entitlement does not include the PS5 version at no cost; Sony is offering it for the stated fee. | Compare the PS4 sale price plus this fee with the direct PS5 edition price before paying. |
| Limited-time upgrade wording | The offer may expire even if the PS4 title remains in your library or remains on sale. | Read the deadline or restriction and complete the upgrade while it is available if you want it. |
| No “Upgrade offer” for the title or account | The displayed listing does not establish a usable PS5 upgrade for your entitlement. | Check that you opened the PS5 page, used the owning account, inserted the correct disc if applicable, and verified the region. If the offer still is not present, treat the PS4 purchase as PS4-only unless Sony shows otherwise. |
Compare the real cost before buying the PS4 sale
A cheap PS4 listing can be the least expensive route to a PS5 game, but only when the title’s offer makes that true. Calculate the complete cost rather than comparing the PS4 sale price with the PS5 sticker price alone.
| Item to compare | Questions to answer on the Store page |
|---|---|
| Total cost | What is the PS4 sale price, and is there an additional upgrade fee? How does that total compare with the PS5 edition price? |
| Entitlement type | Are you buying a digital PS4 copy, using a purchased disc, or relying on a PlayStation Plus benefit? |
| Hardware | If the copy is physical, do you have a PS5 with a disc drive? |
| Region | Does the disc’s country or region match the country or region of the owning PlayStation account? |
| Timing | Does the upgrade offer state that it is available only for a limited time? |
For example, a PS4 discount followed by a paid upgrade can cost more than buying the PS5 edition directly. Conversely, a free upgrade can make the PS4 sale the lower-cost route. There is no universal rule across PS4 games; the title’s own Upgrade offer supplies the price you need.
Digital ownership and disc ownership are not interchangeable
Purchased digital PS4 copy
A purchased digital copy is checked through the PlayStation account that owns it. Start from the PS5 game hub or Store page while signed in to that account. The store will show the applicable upgrade path, including any fee or time limit. You do not insert a disc for a digital entitlement.
Purchased physical PS4 copy
A physical copy uses both the disc and the account. The PS5 must have a disc drive, the disc must match the account’s country or region, and the disc must remain inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version. Buying or borrowing a disc from another region can therefore produce a different result from buying a locally matched copy.
PS4 game received through PlayStation Plus
Do not treat a PlayStation Plus benefit as equivalent to a purchased PS4 game. PlayStation Support says PS4 games redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit are not eligible for a PS5 upgrade unless Sony specifically indicates otherwise. Check the title’s offer, but do not assume that a subscription entitlement qualifies simply because a purchased copy would.

Why the upgrade option may be missing
You are viewing the PS4 listing only
The discounted page may be a PS4 product page without the PS5 edition controls. Return to Search, open the PS5 version or game hub, and look specifically for Upgrade offer. A PS4 label and a PS5 label can appear as separate products.
The wrong account is signed in
Store eligibility is tied to the account that owns the digital game or will redeem the offer. Sign out of any account that does not own the title and repeat the check with the intended account. Do not pay until the offer is visible under that account.
The disc is not inserted
For a physical copy, insert the PS4 disc before opening the game hub. The PS5 needs to verify the disc entitlement. If your console has no disc drive, the physical upgrade route is unavailable on that console.

The disc and account regions differ
Verify the country or region associated with the disc and the PlayStation account. Sony requires them to match for the physical-copy check. A game purchased in another market may therefore fail to show the expected offer on your account.
The entitlement came from PlayStation Plus
If you redeemed the PS4 game through a PlayStation Plus benefit, apply the special rule before troubleshooting further: such games are generally excluded unless Sony indicates an exception. A missing offer in this situation is not evidence that the Store is malfunctioning.
The promotion has ended or is restricted
Some upgrade offers are time-limited. Read the current message on the PS5 page rather than relying on an earlier promotion, a forum post, or an old video. If Sony no longer displays the offer, do not assume that the previous price or free-upgrade condition still applies.
Practical decision paths
You have not bought the discounted PS4 game yet
- Open the PS5 edition or game hub first.
- Select Upgrade offer while signed in to the purchasing account.
- Write down the displayed upgrade price, whether it is free, and any deadline.
- Add the PS4 sale price to any required upgrade fee.
- Compare that total with the PS5 edition price and confirm that the ownership type and hardware fit your setup.
- Buy the PS4 version only after the complete path is clear.
You already bought a digital PS4 copy
- Sign in to the account that bought it.
- Find the PS5 page or game hub through the Store’s Search function.
- Select Upgrade offer and read the current conditions.
- Download at no cost or pay the displayed upgrade fee, as applicable.
You already own a PS4 disc
- Confirm that the PS5 has a disc drive.
- Insert the disc and sign in to the matching account region.
- Open the PS5 game hub, choose Upgrade offer, and read the conditions.
- Download or purchase the PS5 version as shown.
- Keep the disc inserted whenever you play the downloaded PS5 version.
You only have the game through PlayStation Plus
Check the offer, but start with the expectation that the benefit is not eligible unless Sony expressly says otherwise. Do not purchase a separate upgrade or the PS4 edition until you understand which entitlement the Store is recognizing.
A pre-purchase checklist
- Am I signed in to the account that will own the game?
- Did I open the PS5 version or game hub rather than stopping at the PS4 sale page?
- Is Upgrade offer displayed?
- Does it say Download for free, or does it show a purchase price?
- Is the offer limited to a stated period?
- Is my entitlement a purchased digital copy, a purchased disc, or a PlayStation Plus benefit?
- If I use a disc, does my PS5 have a disc drive?
- If I use a disc, does its country or region match my PlayStation account?
- Have I compared the PS4 sale price plus any upgrade fee with the PS5 edition price?
- If the upgrade is for a disc, am I prepared to keep that disc inserted whenever I play the PS5 version?
The rule to remember
A discounted PS4 game includes a PS5 upgrade only when the PS5 Store page or game hub shows an applicable Upgrade offer for your account or eligible disc. That offer may be free, paid, or time-limited. Digital purchases are checked through the owning account; physical purchases additionally require a matching-region disc and a PS5 with a disc drive. PlayStation Plus benefits are generally excluded unless Sony states an exception. Checking those conditions before paying is the reliable way to avoid buying a PS4 version expecting a PS5 entitlement that is not there.
