To find out whether a crypto bonus is locked, restricted, or conditional, open the official terms for the exact offer shown in your app, email, or account—not just the promotional headline. Check eligibility, qualifying actions and deadlines, payout timing, balance requirements, withdrawal effects, and clawback rules before depositing or trading. Save the offer and its terms, since rules can vary by campaign, account, and location.
Check the exact offer, not a general promotion page
Start with the link attached to the offer you received. Some offers have user-specific terms: Coinbase, for example, says a funding bonus’s rate, inflow cap, and bonus period may appear in the offer email, in-app notification, bonus screen, or Rewards Hub. A general page may include multiple, archived, or closed offers, so it does not establish that a particular bonus is currently available to you. Coinbase bonus terms
- Save a screenshot or copy of the offer as it appears to you and the linked official terms.
- Record the offer’s start and end dates, qualification deadline, expected payout date, and any later hold or maintenance period.
- Check that the terms and dates still apply before taking action. Do not rely on another person’s screenshot as proof of your offer.
Read the terms in this order
1. Eligibility and account conditions
Confirm the eligible country or state, age threshold, new- or existing-customer requirement, identity verification, account standing, and any membership condition. Look for limits such as one reward per person, household, or account. Geographic exclusions and eligibility for add-ons or boosters may differ by jurisdiction.
2. What action qualifies—and by when
Find the exact definition of a qualifying deposit or trade. Note the minimum amount, accepted assets and funding sources, transaction type, and whether a transaction must settle or be credited by a deadline. Search for exclusions such as margin or futures activity, transfers from outside the platform, or particular conversions. Do not assume that any transaction labeled a “deposit” or “trade” counts.

3. How the reward is calculated and paid
Check whether the reward is fixed or percentage-based, whether it has a cap or tiers, what currency it is paid in, and when it arrives. Determine whether the amount is delivered at once or in installments. If it is paid in a cryptoasset, its market value can change.
4. What happens if you withdraw or move funds
Search the terms for “withdraw,” “outflow,” “hold,” “maintenance,” “minimum balance,” “reclaim,” “forfeit,” “reverse,” and “clawback.” These words can describe different rules:

- Withdrawal hold: The reward itself cannot be withdrawn for a specified time after it is credited.
- Balance-maintenance condition: You may be able to transact, but falling below a required balance or withdrawing funds can reduce or put the bonus at risk.
- Net-deposit condition: Withdrawals may count against deposits when the platform calculates whether you met or maintained the offer requirement.
- Installments or outflow adjustments: A payout may be released in stages, and certain withdrawals during the bonus period may reduce a payment or lead to reclamation.
Also identify whether withdrawals can be blocked if the account balance cannot cover an applicable fee.
5. Exceptions, costs, and sponsor discretion
Check what happens after a reversed deposit, account closure, compliance review, suspected abuse, or change in location. Note clauses allowing the sponsor to withhold or reclaim a reward. Then account for trading fees, spreads, subscriptions, price movement, and the risk of any required product exposure. A headline bonus amount alone does not show whether the offer is worthwhile.

How these rules appear in official offer terms
The examples below show why it matters to read the full terms. They are not current-offer recommendations: the cited campaigns have specific dates or conditions, and availability can vary.
Qualification rules can be narrowly defined
Kraken’s cited U.S. exclusive promotion offered $50 in BTC to eligible participants who opened a new consumer account, completed required identity verification, and made at least $100 in qualifying spot crypto trades during the promotion period. The rules excluded various activity, including futures, margin, staking, stablecoin-to-stablecoin conversions, and off-platform transfers, and allowed withholding or clawback in specified circumstances. A net-deposit test is not the same as a deposit total
Binance.US’s cited Rare Evo offer required qualifying deposits and/or trades totaling at least $100 within 14 days of signup, followed by a 30-day maintenance condition. Its terms define net deposit as deposits minus withdrawals, valued in USD at transaction time during the maintenance period. They also specify reward tiers, account-standing and distribution conditions, and possible disqualification or clawback. A credited reward may still be held or adjusted
Coinbase’s cited funding-bonus terms describe offers where rewards are released in equal monthly installments and certain outflows during the bonus period may reduce or lead to reclamation of a bonus. A separate Kraken margin-incentive rule sets a 30-day withdrawal hold on the reward, measured from its credit date. That is a reward hold, not simply a requirement to maintain an account balance. The same rules warn that margin trading uses leverage, can amplify gains and losses, and can result in losses exceeding the initial investment. Kraken Margin Incentive rules
A balance condition may last much longer than a reward hold
Crypto.com’s cited campaign FAQ describes a 12-month minimum-balance condition tied to net eligible deposits plus the bonus. It says a pro-rata fee may apply to claw back the bonus if the balance falls below the condition, and withdrawals can be blocked if the balance cannot cover applicable fees. Check local promotion rules and keep records
Promotion requirements and consumer protections vary by jurisdiction. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority says cryptoasset promotions to UK consumers must include clear risk warnings and be fair, clear, and not misleading; it also recommends checking its Warning List before investing. These are UK-specific rules, not a statement of protections in other countries. FCA: “FCA introduces tough new rules for marketing cryptoassets”
