To check whether a commercial diving course is recognized for work in France, verify that the provider is currently authorized for the relevant hyperbaric training, then confirm that the certificate and professional qualification match the job’s activity, intervention class and duties. A foreign or internationally marketed certificate is not automatically equivalent.
Start with the work you want to do
“Commercial diving” is not, by itself, a precise French legal category. First identify the underwater duties, working conditions and maximum relative pressure involved. The French Labour Code uses activity mentions and intervention classes to define the scope of hyperbaric work.
For specified underwater work, the relevant activity category is mention A. Do not assume that a course is suitable simply because its title includes “commercial diver” or “professional diving.” Compare the course outcome with the actual job.
Verify the training provider’s authorization
The Ministry of Labour says workers need a certificat d’aptitude à l’hyperbarie (CAH), obtained after training delivered by an authorized training body. Ask the provider for current documentary evidence that it is authorized and that the specific course is within the authorization’s scope. Read the certificate and match its scope to the job
Article R. 4461-28 of the Labour Code says the CAH indicates the activity mention and the intervention class, which is defined with regard to maximum relative pressure. Those details establish the certificate’s scope; they do not, on their own, prove that every professional qualification required for a particular job is present. The Code’s training provisions identify the professional title scaphandrier de travaux publics, a competency block corresponding to the activity, or—in certain circumstances—a professional certification registered in the RNCP that corresponds to the activity. Do not treat every course certificate as the same qualification
A training-completion certificate, a hyperbaric safety certificate and a professional qualification are related, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Ask the provider to identify each document you will receive, the activity mention and class on the CAH, and the professional title, competency block or RNCP certification—if applicable—that supports the work you plan to do. Then compare those documents with the employer’s requirements and the actual job.
Check foreign qualifications case by case
The Labour Code provides conditional routes for certain training acquired in the EU and for some foreign titles. Relevant cases can require evidence from a competent authority and training objectives that meet the Code’s conditions. French guidance on foreign diplomas also distinguishes between regulated and non-regulated professions, so the treatment depends on the profession and credential. - Describe the job: write down the underwater duties, working conditions and pressure-related scope.
- Request authorization evidence: ask for current proof that the provider and this course fall within the relevant hyperbaric-training authorization.
- Inspect the award: check the CAH’s activity mention and class, then identify any professional title, competency block or RNCP certification awarded or required.
- Test the match: compare the credential scope with the work and obtain the employer’s requirements in writing where possible.
- Resolve foreign-credential questions directly: provide the exact certificate and course information to the competent authority or employer and ask for a case-specific determination.
The official sources establish this verification framework, but do not determine whether an unnamed course is recognized or provide a complete public directory of every authorized provider and course. For that reason, documentary evidence and confirmation about the exact course, credential and job matter.
