Use OpenAI’s official download route for your device, then verify the app’s publisher where the store displays one. On iPhone or Android, the listing should name OpenAI as publisher; on Mac, start at OpenAI’s macOS download instructions; on Windows, get the app from the Microsoft Store. A familiar name or logo alone does not confirm a download is genuine.

How to verify the mobile app
Android
- Open Google Play and search for “openai chatgpt,” or follow the direct Play Store link in OpenAI’s Android guide.
- Before installing, check the listing’s publisher field. It should say OpenAI.
OpenAI notes that availability is limited to supported countries. If you cannot find the app, check the current guidance rather than assuming a similarly named result is official.
iPhone and iPad
- Open the Apple App Store and search for “openai chatgpt,” or use the direct App Store link in OpenAI’s iOS guide.
- Check the listing’s publisher field and proceed only if it names OpenAI.
OpenAI says the app is available in many countries and directs users to its supported-country information; availability can vary by location.
How to verify the desktop app
macOS
Go to chatgpt.com/download and use the installer offered there. OpenAI says the page detects whether the Mac uses Apple Silicon or Intel and provides the corresponding download. Windows
Install ChatGPT from the Microsoft Store. OpenAI lists Windows 10 (x64 or arm64), version 17763.0 or higher, as the system requirement. Enterprise-managed deployments can use the winget command documented by OpenAI, which specifies the Microsoft Store as its source; check the current Windows app instructions rather than relying on a copied command.
What if the app is called ChatGPT Classic?
The name alone does not establish that an app is fake. OpenAI’s desktop transition guidance says the previous macOS app is called ChatGPT Classic and continues to be supported; it also describes a newer desktop app for macOS and Windows that includes Chat, Work, and Codex. If you encounter both names, confirm the release through OpenAI’s desktop transition guidance and official download channels rather than judging by the icon.

If a download does not match the official route
Do not proceed with an installer if its source or listed publisher does not match the route above. Return to the relevant official app store or OpenAI download page and obtain ChatGPT there. A matching logo, a scan, or a security product cannot by itself prove that a particular app is an official OpenAI release.
