You can make a more informed decision before installing: verify the publisher, compare each requested permission with the extension’s purpose, read its data disclosures, and use any available site-access limits. If the identity, access, or data practices do not make sense together, do not install it.
1. Verify the listing and publisher
Find the extension in your browser’s official extension store. Avoid installing from an ad, download mirror, or unsolicited prompt. Check that the listing’s name, publisher, stated function, and linked website are consistent with one another. A familiar name is not proof of authenticity; a lookalike listing can use a recognizable name.
Also make sure the listing describes the feature you actually want. A mismatch between the advertised function and the publisher or linked site is a reason to stop and investigate rather than proceed.
2. Translate the permission prompt into access
Read the installation prompt rather than clicking through it. A permission describes what the extension can do, not proof that it is doing something harmful. Google’s Chrome Web Store Help puts it plainly: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” Chrome’s permission guide explains the capabilities behind common warnings.

- Data on all websites: The extension may read, request, or modify information on every page you visit. This is broad access and deserves a clear feature-based explanation.
- Browsing history or browsing activity: This can reveal which sites you visit.
- Tabs: Depending on the permission, the extension may be able to see information about open tabs or your browsing activity.
- Clipboard, bookmarks, or location: These permissions expose sensitive information or capabilities that should fit the extension’s stated job.
Broad permissions are not automatically malicious. An extension that changes page content, for example, may need access to the pages where it works. The useful question is whether each permission is necessary for the feature you intend to use—and whether a narrower option would work.
3. Check whether access can be narrowed
In Chrome, open Extensions > Manage extensions, choose the extension, and review its site-access setting. Chrome lets you choose access when the extension is selected, on the current site, or on all sites; you can also manage allowed sites. The labels and controls may change, so consult Chrome’s current extension-management help if the menu differs.

Prefer the narrowest setting that still lets the extension do what you need. For example, an extension you use only on one website may not need access to every site. This control is not universal: Chrome notes that site-permission settings do not affect lower-level network changes made by VPN or proxy extensions.
4. Read the data-use disclosures
Look for what information the extension collects, why it collects it, and whether it transmits or shares it. A privacy policy should be specific enough to connect the data practices to the extension’s features. Treat the policy as the publisher’s statement, not independent proof that the extension behaves as described.

For Chrome extensions that handle user data, Chrome Web Store policy requires disclosure and informed consent before installation, as well as requesting only the permissions needed for the product’s features. The policy says developers should “Request access to the narrowest permissions necessary to implement your Product’s features or services.” Read the Chrome Web Store Program Policies for the requirements.
Firefox also presents requested permissions during installation and describes data collection disclosures. Mozilla says its data-category interface—covering categories such as identifying information, web activity, search terms, and bookmarks—applies to Firefox 140 and later. 5. Treat reviews and trust indicators as clues, not certification
Reviews can reveal usability problems or recent complaints. Give more weight to specific, recent reports than to a high rating or a large number of users. Neither popularity nor positive reviews establish that the listing is authentic, that its code is safe, or that a later update will remain benign.
Chrome’s Enhanced protection may warn if an extension is not considered trusted under Chrome Web Store developer policies. That signal can inform your choice, but it does not guarantee every aspect of an extension’s behavior or its future updates. An official-store listing is preferable to an unknown download source, but store presence is not a safety certification. Chrome describes its trust warnings and site-access controls in Install and manage extensions.

6. Make the install-or-skip decision
Before installing, use these checks together rather than treating any one as decisive:
- Does the publisher’s identity match the listing and linked site?
- Does each permission have a convincing connection to the advertised feature?
- Can you limit website access to the sites or moments when you use the extension?
- Are collection, use, and sharing practices explained clearly?
- Do recent reviews raise specific concerns about the publisher, behavior, or updates?
If the publisher is unclear, the listing is misleading, data practices are vague, or broad access has no convincing feature need, skip the extension and look for an alternative. If you already installed it and have concerns, turn it off or remove it in the browser’s extension manager, then review the browser’s current security guidance.
Why a permission warning is not a verdict
Some legitimate features need access to page data, so a broad permission does not prove abuse. At the same time, a permission is a real capability grant, and access to all sites can expose or permit changes to information on pages you visit. The right response is to weigh the scope against the stated function, disclosures, and available controls—not to ignore the warning or assume it settles the question.
One historical study illustrates why the permission itself should not be treated as a malware label. A USENIX SOUPS 2021 paper reported that 47 of the 50 most-downloaded Firefox extensions in its sample requested “Access all data on all websites”; the download and rating counts were retrieved in August 2020. That sample-specific result is neither a current market rate nor evidence that those extensions were malicious. Read the study.
