To check a BoKS environment, inventory the exact versions of its Master/server, Server Agent or client, and any separately installed BoKS SSH package, then compare each component with the matching Fortra advisory. In the October 2026 updates, Fortra lists server builds s-8.1.0.24 and s-9.0.0.7 and client build c-8.1.0.30; the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security says BoKS server versions below 8.1.0.24 and 9.0.0.7 are affected by its alert. A server version alone does not establish whether agents or SSH packages are current.
This is a version and exposure check, not a test for compromise. Only local package and service records can show what is installed and running in your environment.
1. Inventory every BoKS component
Start by listing each BoKS Master and Replica, managed host running a Server Agent, and system with a separately packaged BoKS SSH component. Include any legacy tar-based client installation. Record the machine’s role and whether it runs the autoregistration service. Advisories identify particular packages and binaries, so a product name or Master version is not enough to assess all systems.
- BoKS server: record its full package version and maintenance line.
- Client or Server Agent: record each installed version separately from the server version.
- BoKS SSH: confirm whether it is installed, and record its package version.
- Legacy clients: note tar-based installations, especially where the Master can select clients for upgrade or patching.
- Services: check whether
boks_autoregisterd,boks_portmux, orboks_sshdare present and running on relevant hosts.
Use local package-management records and service state to establish the inventory. The advisories do not identify the software installed on your machines.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Compare server versions with the October 2026 thresholds
For the BoKS server products covered by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security’s October alert, versions below the corresponding threshold are affected:
| Server maintenance line | Threshold in the October 2026 alert | Fortra server build listed October 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 8.1 | Versions below 8.1.0.24 are affected | s-8.1.0.24 |
| 9.0 | Versions below 9.0.0.7 are affected | s-9.0.0.7 |
These are branch-specific server thresholds, not interchangeable numbers. Match the installed package to its maintenance line; do not use a 9.0 threshold to judge an 8.1 installation, or vice versa. Fortra’s October 2, 2026 release notes also list client build c-8.1.0.30, but that client version is not a server threshold. Use the relevant client, agent, or SSH advisory for those components. 3. Check the vulnerability that applies to each service or package
Version assessment should be tied to the affected component and the conditions described by its advisory. Fortra’s 2026 advisories identify these issues:
| Issue | Affected component and stated condition | Vendor-published severity |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-12627 | boks_autoregisterd: a remote attacker with network access may trigger memory corruption during client response processing. |
Critical; CVSS v3.1 9.8, Fortra, 2026 |
| CVE-2026-79896 | boks_portmux: a remote unauthenticated attacker can submit a malformed TLS ClientHello to terminate the service; repeated requests can sustain the interruption. |
High; CVSS v3.1 7.5, Fortra, 2026 |
| CVE-2026-79900 | KSL checksum handling: an authenticated KSL client can send an oversized recognized digest name that writes beyond a heap allocation. | Medium; CVSS v3.1 6.5, Fortra, 2026 |
| CVE-2026-14316 | boks_sshd: a revoked-key error path uses a buffer too small for its formatted failure message. |
High; CVSS v3.1 8.1, Fortra, 2026 |
| CVE-2026-9862 | boks_autoregisterd: a remote attacker with network access may execute commands with the service’s privileges during autoregistration. |
See Fortra’s issue-specific advisory for its severity and affected-version details. |
| CVE-2026-9863 | Legacy tar-based client upgrade or patch handling: a malicious or compromised selected client may cause commands to execute on the BoKS Master during version handling. | See Fortra’s issue-specific advisory for its severity and affected-version details. |
| CVE-2025-13532 | Server Agent 9.0 instances supporting yescrypt in an 8.1 domain; Fortra recommends Server Agent 9.0.0.4. | See Fortra’s issue-specific advisory for its severity and affected-version details. |
The CVSS figures are scores published by Fortra, not independent calculations or estimates that a particular installation is compromised. For each issue, confirm the affected package and fixed build in the linked vendor advisory rather than inferring an agent or SSH threshold from the server table. Fortra security advisories.

4. Prioritize reachable services while checking versions
Exposure depends in part on whether the affected service is reachable and on the attack preconditions in its advisory. In particular, review network paths to autoregistration and port multiplexing services while you determine the installed builds. The June 2026 Fortra advisory for CVE-2026-9862 says boks_autoregisterd listens on port 6507 by default and recommends restricting network access to it until fixed builds are deployed. That is interim advice for this command-injection issue; do not treat it as a substitute for updates or as a mitigation for every BoKS vulnerability.
For CVE-2026-9863, Fortra’s interim advice is to perform upgrade or patch operations only against trusted clients until fixed builds are deployed. This concern applies to legacy tar-based clients selected for those operations, not every modern client installation.

5. Install the matching fix and verify it is active
- For each affected component, open the relevant Fortra advisory and release notes; identify the fixed package for its maintenance line.
- Plan the change across all affected Masters, Replicas, agents, clients, and SSH installations rather than updating only the first server found.
- For CVE-2026-79900, Fortra specifies boks-server 8.1.0.24 or 9.0.0.7 as applicable, and says to ensure the updated
boks_ksllogsdis running. - After the update, recheck package versions and service state on every affected node. A package record alone does not confirm that a required updated daemon is active.
- If package records do not clearly map a legacy, agent, or SSH installation to an advisory, confirm the mapping with Fortra before deciding it is unaffected.
6. Check Entra ID compatibility before a 9.0 upgrade
Fortra warns that Server s-9.0.0.7 with Client c-9.0.0.6 can fail Entra ID authentication or use a different permitted authentication method. If your environment uses Entra ID, Fortra’s release notes recommend waiting for Client c-9.0.0.7 and upgrading both components. Validate the intended server-client combination against the current release notes before scheduling the change. Fortra release notes and security advisories.
What the check can and cannot establish
A component-by-component comparison can show whether recorded versions fall below a published affected-version threshold and whether a named service is running or reachable. It cannot establish that a host has been compromised, nor can a server build certify the status of its agents or SSH packages. The October 2026 version details are time-sensitive; check Fortra’s current advisory and release information before acting on a later date.
