For RPCS3, an ordinary Blu-ray drive may not be able to read a PlayStation 3 game disc. Check the drive’s exact model and revision against RPCS3’s compatible-drive guidance; the Quickstart specifies a MediaTek chipset and a +6 read offset for reading PS3 discs. A compatible drive is only one part of the computer-dumping process.
Check the exact model and revision
- Identify the drive itself. Read the model number from the drive’s label and compare it with the seller’s listing. A brand name, enclosure label, or claim that a product reads Blu-ray discs is not enough. Compatibility may depend on the drive revision.
- Look up that model in the RPCS3 Quickstart’s compatible BD drive list. Examples listed there include LG BE16NU50, BH16NS40 and BP50NB40; ASUS BC-12D2HT and BC-16D1HT; Samsung SE-506; Lite-On IHBS112; Sony Optiarc BD-5300S; and BenQ BR1000. Some entries are revision-dependent, so confirm the exact unit rather than relying on the model family alone. RPCS3 Quickstart
- Check the computer connection and form factor. Make sure the actual drive—not just its enclosure—has an interface and physical format your computer can use.
The Quickstart copy available at the link identifies itself as a “Website Release Preview 2021.12.05.” Treat its models as a starting point, not a guarantee that every revision or currently sold product will work; check RPCS3’s current hardware guidance before buying.
Buy from a seller you can verify
Counterfeit listings are another reason to verify the physical unit. On 1 October 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that RPCS3 developers had warned about drives presented as higher-end models despite using older mechanisms and spoofed firmware. The report identifies possible warning signs such as misspellings, misaligned logos, incorrect manufacturing dates and obscured PCB markings. Understand what a compatible drive enables
A compatible drive enables the computer-based route for reading and dumping a PS3 disc; it does not, by itself, make a game ready to run. RPCS3’s Quickstart says this route also requires a matching .ird file to decrypt the disc. A typical Blu-ray game directory contains PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.sfb; PS3_UPDATE is optional. Complete the required setup lawfully
RPCS3’s Quickstart directs users to obtain official PlayStation 3 system software from PlayStation and install it using RPCS3’s built-in firmware installer. It says game titles must be self-dumped from the user’s own PS3 or computer and advises checking the software-distribution laws that apply in the user’s country. RPCS3 Quickstart
