To verify a claim that a 3D printer’s firmware supports an ASTM firearm-blocking standard, get the exact standard designation and edition, the firmware version and printer models covered, and documentation explaining the claim. Then check the standard’s title and scope in ASTM’s catalogue. A broad “ASTM compliant” statement is not enough—and a standard about firearm locks or general additive manufacturing does not establish firmware compliance.

What to ask the printer manufacturer

  1. Request the exact ASTM designation and edition. Ask for the standard number, edition year, and a public compliance statement or other documentation. Without an exact designation, you cannot check which standard the claim refers to.
  2. Identify the covered firmware and printers. Ask which firmware version and printer models are included, and what “supports” means in the manufacturer’s statement. Request documentation describing the claim’s scope.
  3. Look for supporting evidence. Ask whether the manufacturer can provide test documentation or an attestation explaining how the named firmware and models meet the standard. Do not treat a general marketing statement as proof that a specific version was evaluated.

Check that the ASTM standard is actually about printer firmware

Search the official ASTM catalogue for the exact designation supplied by the manufacturer. Confirm the document’s title, edition, current status, and scope. The scope must address printer firmware or firearm-blocking technology; a shared subject or acronym is not enough.

Do not confuse ASTM F2369-26 with a printer firmware standard

ASTM F2369-26 covers non-integral firearm locking devices. Its scope concerns firearm locks, not firmware that blocks a 3D printer from starting a job. Citing F2369-26 therefore does not demonstrate that a printer’s firmware supports a firearm-blocking standard.

General additive-manufacturing standards are not proof either

ASTM’s additive-manufacturing overview describes standards relating to terminology, production-process performance, product quality, and machine calibration. That overview does not identify a firearm-blocking firmware standard. It is an overview, not an exhaustive catalogue search, so it cannot establish that no applicable standard exists elsewhere in ASTM’s catalogue.

What the surfaced California AB 2047 text says

The surfaced text of California AB 2047 defines “firearm blocking technology” to include hardware, firmware, or other integrated technology that prevents a printer from proceeding with a print job until the underlying file has been evaluated by a firearm-blueprint detection algorithm. It describes the California Department of Justice checking whether ASTM has published industry standards beginning no later than July 1, 2027, and quarterly thereafter. The bill text is available through the official California legislative text.

Those statements describe the surfaced bill text; they do not, by themselves, establish the bill’s current legal status or operative effect, or that an ASTM standard already exists. If a manufacturer or other source relies on AB 2047, check the bill’s current status and any relevant Department of Justice guidance before treating a requirement or date as currently operative.

How to assess the claim

  • Specific and verifiable: The manufacturer names an exact ASTM designation and edition, identifies the firmware version and printer models covered, and provides documentation describing the claim.
  • Needs clarification: The manufacturer says “ASTM compliant” but gives no designation, edition, models, or firmware version.
  • Does not establish firmware support: The cited document covers firearm locks or general additive manufacturing rather than printer firmware or firearm-blocking technology.

This is a document-based verification approach, not a test of a printer. A compliance claim should not be treated as independently verified unless its specific standard, scope, and covered firmware are clear.
