First, check the YouTube player on your device: make sure it is not paused, then see whether the picture or lecture content advances and whether audio continues. If it appears stuck, reopen YouTube and test another supported device. If you operate the channel, check the stream’s status and health in YouTube Live Control Room; those tools show whether YouTube is receiving the source, not whether every viewer’s device is playing it correctly.
Check playback on the device you are using
- Check the player controls. If the player is paused or you have sought backward, press Play and return to the live point if needed. A still frame by itself does not show that the broadcast has ended: YouTube’s DVR controls can let viewers pause, rewind, and fast-forward (YouTube LiveBroadcasts API reference).
- Look and listen for progress. Watch for a changing picture or lecture content and listen for continuing audio if the stream includes it. If both appear to stop, the player may be stalled, paused, or showing a static scene; that alone does not establish that the source broadcast ended.
- Retry playback. Reopen the browser or YouTube app. If the problem persists, check the browser and device, then try another supported device. These are among YouTube’s recommended checks for playback problems (YouTube troubleshooting guidance).
- Compare with other videos or a second device. If other videos also buffer or fail, that is a clue to investigate your local device, browser, or network; it is not a definitive diagnosis. YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can affect live programming (YouTube live-stream metrics and guidance).
If you operate the lecture stream
Check the source in Live Control Room
Open the stream’s dashboard in YouTube Live Control Room and review its stream status, health, and available live metrics. The metrics available can vary with the streaming method. A healthy or active source is useful evidence that YouTube is receiving the stream, but it cannot confirm that a particular viewer’s connection, browser, or device is rendering it correctly (YouTube live-stream metrics).
Use the API for programmatic checks
If you have an API-authorized monitoring setup, retrieve the associated liveStream resource and inspect status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus. The API defines active as YouTube receiving data via the stream; inactive means it is not receiving the stream, and error indicates an error condition. Health values include good, ok, bad, and noData. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference for the fields and definitions.
Check broadcast state separately
The source stream’s state and the broadcast’s state are related but distinct. YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle guidance says to confirm that the bound stream is active before transitioning the broadcast (Life of a Broadcast). An active source is not an end-to-end playback guarantee.

What each signal can tell you
| Observation | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Picture and audio continue on your device | Your player appears to be advancing now. | That every other viewer has uninterrupted playback. |
| Player is paused or the picture does not change | Playback may be paused, seeking, stalled, or showing a static frame. | That the source broadcast ended. |
| Live Control Room reports a healthy or active source | YouTube is receiving the source stream and reports its condition. | That a particular viewer’s device and network are rendering it. |
| Viewer or concurrent-viewer count is nonzero | YouTube is reporting playback or viewer activity in aggregate. | That your individual player is advancing at this moment. |
| Another supported device plays correctly | The first device, browser, or network may be involved. | A definitive cause without further diagnosis. |
Why viewer counts cannot confirm your playback
YouTube defines a playback as an instance when a browser or device starts playing a live stream, and concurrent viewers as viewers watching simultaneously. These are aggregate metrics, not a live heartbeat for one person’s player. Use them as context alongside the actual player and, if you own the channel, the source status (YouTube metrics on a computer; YouTube metrics on Android).
