Confirm that Monetization is set to On. That verifies the stream-level setting—not that your channel meets every requirement or that an ad will appear for every viewer.
Check the live stream’s Monetization setting
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create, then Go live.
- For a stream you are setting up, use the Stream tab. For a scheduled stream, open Manage and select it.
- Choose Edit, then Monetization.
- Check that Monetization is set to On. If it is off, turn it on if the option is available and save the change.
If you want to inspect mid-roll behavior too, review the ad setting in that panel. The stream-level toggle is only one part of eligibility; it does not establish your channel’s program or agreement status.
Check channel-level eligibility and terms
You must be in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) to choose ad monetization for a live stream. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams, you also need to accept the Watch Page Monetization Module in YouTube Studio’s Earn section. Check your channel’s Earn status and module acceptance as well as the individual stream’s setting.
If a control is missing or unavailable, verify these channel-level requirements before treating it as a stream error. Studio’s display for your own channel is the place to confirm its current status.

What the On setting does—and does not—mean
YouTube Help says that pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when monetization is turned on for a live stream. Mid-roll ads can be configured separately. An On setting does not guarantee that an ad will serve: YouTube states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” Viewers can receive ads at different times, and some may not receive one at all.

- Channel: The channel is in YPP and able to monetize.
- Agreement: The Watch Page Monetization Module has been accepted for Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue.
- Stream: Monetization is On for this stream in Live Control Room.
- Content: The stream complies with advertiser-friendly requirements and is not subject to an age restriction that makes it ineligible for monetization.
- Format and viewing context: The stream format and player context support the ad types in question.
- Delivery: Even when the other checks are satisfied, an ad may not be shown to a particular viewer.
Choose how to handle live mid-roll ads
YouTube offers automatic, scheduled, and manual mid-roll options. They differ in how much intervention they require, but none guarantees an ad impression.

You can defer automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes with Delay ads in Live Control Room; a countdown appears before ads resume. YouTube cautions that manually placed mid-rolls still display while Delay ads is on.

Check format, content, and playback context
Horizontal versus vertical live
YouTube’s live-format comparison lists pre-roll and mid-roll live ads as supported for horizontal live streams, but not for the vertical live feed. If you are using a vertical live feed and those ad options are unavailable, that is a documented format limitation rather than necessarily a Studio fault.
Advertiser suitability and age restrictions
Content monetized with ads must comply with YouTube’s advertiser-friendly content guidelines. Content that is not suitable for all audiences may be age restricted and ineligible for monetization; content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines may receive limited or no ads. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats. Turning the setting on does not override policy decisions or rights requirements.

External embeds with autoplay
YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream when its player is embedded on an external site with autoplay. This stated limitation is specific to that autoplay case; it should not be generalized into a guarantee about every other embed configuration.

YouTube’s guidance does not establish a special 24/7 eligibility switch or promise that continuously streamed content will receive ads continuously. Check the stream, channel, content, format, and viewer context using the same steps above; duration alone does not confirm ad eligibility or delivery.

If ads are not appearing, troubleshoot in this order
- Monetization is off for the stream: Reopen Go live > Edit > Monetization and check the stream-level setting.
- The channel is not eligible or the module is not accepted: Check YPP status and the Watch Page Monetization Module in Earn.
- The content is limited or ineligible: Check for advertiser-friendly policy issues or an age restriction. An On toggle does not remove these limits.
- You expect mid-rolls but none are configured: Review whether the stream uses automatic, scheduled, or manual placement. In manual mode, a break must be inserted while live.
- You use a vertical live feed: YouTube does not list live pre-roll or mid-roll ads as supported for the vertical feed.
- The stream is playing in an external autoplay embed: YouTube says ads are turned off in that case.
- A particular viewer did not receive an ad: This alone does not prove the stream is ineligible; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.
What YouTube’s automatic-mid-roll figure means
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour among creators who turned on automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. The comparison was reported by YouTube in January 2024 across 207 countries. It is a platform-reported average comparison, not a guaranteed outcome, an individual-channel forecast, or proof that automatic placement will increase a particular stream’s earnings by that amount.
