To see what Google AI Mode shows about your brand, run a consistent set of real customer questions in AI Mode and record the full visible answers, date, market or language, and source links. Use Search Console’s Search generative AI performance report to track site-level impressions over time; it does not provide a complete ledger of brand mentions, answer text, or sentiment.
Check the answers customers could actually see
Search Console metrics cannot replace reviewing AI Mode’s visible response. For each prompt, note whether your brand is named, whether your own site is linked, what the answer says about you, and which other sources appear. Treat this as a repeatable manual audit, not a Google-defined metric.
Build a useful prompt set
- Brand-name questions, such as questions about your company or its reputation.
- Category questions and comparisons customers might ask before choosing a provider.
- Questions about particular products or services you offer.
- Questions for which your site would be a plausible source, even when the brand is not named.
Keep branded and non-branded prompts separate. Use wording based on genuine customer questions rather than changing prompts from one check to the next.
Run and record each check
- Open Google Search and enter one prompt in AI Mode.
- Record the exact prompt, date, market or language, and device conditions. Keep these conditions consistent between checks where possible.
- Save the complete visible response and its visible source links. A screenshot can preserve the page as it appeared during that check.
- Log these observations separately: brand named, brand’s own site linked, another site describing the brand, claim accuracy, and visible competitors or other sources.
A mention and a link are different observations: AI Mode may name a brand without linking its site, or show a source link without making the brand central to the response.

Track site exposure in Search Console
Google’s Search generative AI performance report covers Search AI features including AI Mode and provides impression reporting with page and country dimensions. Use it to follow reported site exposure and trends, not to infer the exact answer to an individual prompt. Google says standard Search performance-report limits apply and the newest data may be preliminary. See Google Search Console Help: Generative AI performance report (Search).
Keep the date range and available dimensions with your notes. Report impressions are not a transcript, a complete brand-mention count, or proof that a specific prompt caused an appearance. Keep report data distinct from your manual observations.

Check whether your site is eligible for AI features
In Search Console, open Settings > Search generative AI to view or manage a property’s inclusion choice. Google says the control covers AI Mode, AI Overviews, and generative AI features in Discover. Check whether the property inherits a parent setting; Google says a change generally takes a few days to apply. This setting controls whether a site’s content can be included in or help ground Search generative AI features. It is not a command to mention your brand or change an answer. Compare checks without treating one answer as permanent
Google says AI Mode may use “query fan-out”—issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources—to develop a response. Google also says it continues to test and improve how links appear in AI answers. The answer and visible sources can therefore vary; one check is a dated snapshot, not a lasting ranking or guarantee. Improve the underlying site without expecting a guaranteed citation
Google’s guidance points site owners to fundamental Search practices and helpful, reliable content. Those practices can support discoverability, but the cited guidance does not promise that any specific tactic guarantees a brand mention or link. Save a screenshot of the manual check
A screenshot can preserve the visible response and links for your dated audit record. To capture the page yourself, open AI Mode, run the prompt, wait until the response and source links you need are visible, and use your browser’s screenshot or print-to-PDF function. Keep the prompt and market details alongside the saved capture so you can compare like with like later.
