The Steam Frame’s published display specification is 2160 × 2160 LCD pixels per eye, with a 72–144 Hz refresh range and 144 Hz listed as experimental by Valve in 2026. To identify the panel in your particular headset, read its display EDID from SteamOS Desktop Mode and decode it with edid-decode. EDID may contain the manufacturer, model, product name, serial information and preferred timings. It is the best software-accessible evidence of the physical panel, but it can be missing or incomplete.
Do not use a game’s render-resolution setting or the Steam Frame performance overlay as a substitute for panel identification. Those values describe images submitted to the display pipeline, not the LCD’s manufacturer or part number.
What Valve specifies—and what it does not
Valve’s official Steam Frame specification gives the display as 2160 × 2160 LCD per eye. The listed refresh range is 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz marked experimental. These are headset-level specifications, not a disclosure of the exact LCD component installed in every unit.

The 2160 × 2160 figure should remain your reference even if a particular software diagnostic cannot read the panel. An EDID failure means that the model could not be determined through that software path; it does not establish a different resolution.

What you need before checking
- A Steam Frame running SteamOS.
- Access to the headset’s Desktop Mode. Valve provides a standard Linux desktop on the headset for diagnostics.
- A terminal application in Desktop Mode.
- The
edid-decodeutility. If it is not already available, obtain it through the normal software-management method for the SteamOS environment rather than assuming a particular package command. - Permission to use
sudowhen the EDID file cannot be read by your normal account. - A place to save the raw EDID binary, the decoded output, the SteamOS build and the date of the check.
You do not need an EDID emulator, a USB-C cable, a recovery drive or a replacement LCD to perform this check. The procedure reads the display information exposed by the headset itself.
Open Desktop Mode on the headset
- Open the Steam Frame dashboard menu while wearing the headset.
- Choose + (Launch Program).
- Select Desktop. Valve’s Desktop option opens a standard Linux desktop on the headset.
- Launch a terminal window from that desktop.
Keep the headset powered while you collect the data. The display connector and its EDID are exposed through the running Linux graphics stack, so a connector may not appear if the graphics device is not currently detecting the panel.
Find the connected display’s EDID
List the DRM connectors
Linux exposes display connectors through the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) filesystem. In the terminal, run:

ls -1 /sys/class/drmThe output contains connector directories and other DRM entries. Connector names vary by hardware and software build, so do not assume a fixed name. Your task is to find a connected connector directory that contains a file named edid.
Identify the connector directory
Inspect the listed connector directories and look for an edid file beneath one of them. Linux’s connected-display EDID path follows the pattern:
/sys/class/drm/<connector>/edidReplace <connector> with the directory name shown on your headset. If more than one connector contains EDID data, record each candidate and decode them separately. Do not select a connector merely because its name looks familiar; use the one whose EDID is associated with the headset’s active display path.

Decode the EDID directly
Once you have found the path, run:
sudo edid-decode /sys/class/drm/<connector>/edidThe decoder turns the binary EDID into readable identification and timing information. Depending on what the panel reports, the output can include manufacturer, model, product-name and serial fields, detailed timings, supported modes and validation information.
Save a binary copy when direct decoding is inconvenient
You can preserve the raw data first and decode the saved file:
cat /sys/class/drm/<connector>/edid > frame-edid.bin
edid-decode frame-edid.binKeep frame-edid.bin unchanged. It is the closest thing to a raw record of what the kernel exposed at the time of the test. Save the decoder output alongside it, and note the SteamOS build and date. Firmware changes can alter what software reports later, so this context matters when comparing results.
How to read the decoded output
Manufacturer, model and product name
Use the EDID identification fields as the panel identity reported by that display interface. Linux DRM documentation describes EDID as useful for vendor, model and serial identification. A readable manufacturer or model string is stronger evidence of a per-unit panel difference than a game setting, but it is still a reported string: some panels provide only a generic name, and some devices may place an intermediary in the display path.
Record the fields exactly, including capitalization, punctuation and any numeric product code. Do not turn a short product-name string into a more specific part-number claim than the EDID actually makes.

Find the EDID’s preferred detailed timing. Treat its active width and height as the preferred or native mode reported to the kernel. Compare those active dimensions with Valve’s 2160 × 2160-per-eye specification.

The comparison is useful, but it must be read in context. A preferred timing is a mode description, not a teardown photograph or an independent measurement of the glass. If the active dimensions do not appear as expected, first check that you decoded the headset connector’s EDID rather than another display path and that the EDID passed validation.
Supported modes and refresh rates
Record the detailed-timing and mode lines, including their refresh rates. These show what the display path advertises as supported. They can help explain why a particular refresh option is available or absent in software.
Do not confuse these physical-display timings with a game’s internal render resolution. A game can render at a lower or higher intermediate size and still submit an image that the compositor scales to the panel’s mode. Conversely, a streamed image size describes the transport or source image, not the LCD’s pixel matrix.

Use the decoder’s validation and checksum messages when judging confidence. A valid checksum does not prove that a model string is a complete component part number, but an invalid or truncated block weakens every identification and timing conclusion drawn from it. Preserve the decoder’s warnings in your saved report instead of copying only the attractive-looking model line.
Physical panel resolution versus rendered image resolution
The Steam Frame performance graph can help you answer a different question. Valve’s debugging documentation says the in-headset performance graph includes the target loop framerate and an aaaaxbbbb value for the per-eye images submitted by the game.
That value is useful for checking the size of the images being submitted to the compositor. It is not a panel manufacturer, LCD part-number or guaranteed physical-pixel readout. A game’s submitted image can differ from the panel’s native mode because of supersampling, dynamic resolution, reprojection, foveated rendering, scaling or streaming.

Use the two diagnostics for separate purposes:
- EDID: panel identity as reported by the display interface, preferred timing and advertised modes.
- Performance graph: target loop framerate and per-eye image dimensions submitted by software.
If the overlay shows a value other than 2160 × 2160, that alone does not contradict Valve’s specification. It may simply describe the current rendered or submitted image.
When no panel model appears
An empty, unreadable or invalid /sys/class/drm/<connector>/edid file means “panel model not determined by this software path.” It does not prove that the headset uses a different resolution or a different LCD.
Why EDID can be absent
- The graphics device is not detecting the panel at the moment you check.
- The panel sends no EDID data.
- The display path does not forward the panel’s EDID correctly.
- The file is present but incomplete or corrupted, producing decoder warnings.
- You selected a connector that is not the headset’s active display path.
Checks that do not overstate the result
- Run
ls -1 /sys/class/drmagain and inspect every plausible connector directory for anedidfile. - Confirm that the headset display is active and that you are checking the Steam Frame’s own connector rather than an unrelated display entry.
- Retry the decoder with
sudoif the file cannot be read because of permissions. - Save the raw file and decoder warnings, even when the output is incomplete.
- Record the SteamOS build and date, then state explicitly that the per-unit panel identity could not be read.
If those checks still produce no usable EDID, the defensible report is: “Valve specifies 2160 × 2160 LCD per eye; this unit’s panel model was not exposed through the available DRM EDID path.” Do not fill the gap with a guessed supplier or part number.
Comparing two Steam Frame units
When investigating whether two headsets contain different panels, collect the same evidence from both units under comparable conditions. A difference in game render settings is not evidence of different hardware.

For a useful comparison, archive each unit’s raw frame-edid.bin, decoded text and system details. If only the overlay differs while both EDIDs match, the evidence points to a rendering or software setting rather than different panel hardware.

“No such file or directory”
The connector name in your command does not match the directory exposed on that unit, or that connector has no EDID file. Re-run the listing command and substitute the exact directory name. Do not invent a connector suffix from another headset.

“Permission denied”
The EDID file may be readable only with elevated privileges. Retry the direct decoder with sudo. For a saved copy, use the command shown above and choose a location where your account can write the output.
“edid-decode: command not found”
The decoder utility is not installed or is not on the current path. Install the utility using the package source appropriate to your SteamOS environment, then rerun the command. Until the binary is decoded, the raw EDID file alone is not a human-readable panel identification.
Decoder reports a bad checksum or truncated block
Keep the warning in your report. A malformed EDID can still contain clues, but it should not be treated as conclusive proof of a model or native mode. Retry after confirming the connector and display state; if the warning persists, report the identity as unconfirmed.
Several connectors contain EDID data
Decode each candidate and compare the identification and timings. Use the connector associated with the headset’s active display path. If the outputs conflict, retain all outputs and describe the ambiguity rather than selecting the most convenient model string.
What a reproducible report should contain
A short, auditable report lets another person distinguish a physical-display finding from a rendering observation. Include:
- The Valve specification you are comparing against: 2160 × 2160 LCD per eye, 72–144 Hz, with 144 Hz experimental.
- The exact connector directory used.
- The complete decoded EDID output, including warnings and checksum results.
- The untouched
frame-edid.binfile. - The preferred detailed timing and the full supported-mode list.
- The manufacturer, model, product-name and serial fields exactly as displayed, if present.
- The SteamOS build and the date and time of collection.
- Any performance-overlay
aaaaxbbbbvalue, clearly labeled as submitted per-eye image resolution rather than panel resolution.
This record preserves the distinction between what Valve advertises for every Steam Frame and what one individual headset’s display interface reports.
