Before driving in Syracuse, check the official 511NY traffic map, then verify planned work in NYSDOT Region 3 Traveler Advisories. If your route uses I-90, also check the New York State Thruway scheduled lane-closure page. These sources cover different kinds of information, so checking the relevant ones helps you spot both current disruptions and announced work.
Check live Syracuse conditions on the 511NY map
-
Open the 511NY map and select the Central Syracuse Utica Area view.
-
Search for or zoom in on the road, interchange, or ramp you plan to use. Turn on the map layers for closures, incidents, construction, and future construction closures.
-
Inspect traffic speeds and nearby camera images to understand conditions around the route. 511NY also displays Waze-reported incidents as additional information alongside official NYSDOT reports; treat those reports as a supplementary signal and check official notices for closure details.

511NY describes traffic speeds and camera images as continuously updated. Its FAQ gives camera refresh examples of every 30 seconds in some cases and every 60 seconds or more in others; those examples are not a guarantee that every image refreshes on the same schedule. Incident updates depend on agency staff receiving reports, and construction information can change as work starts, ends, or conditions shift.
Verify planned road and ramp closures
For announced work on local roads, check the NYSDOT Region 3 Traveler Advisories. The page lists dated notices, including Syracuse and Onondaga County lane, road, and ramp closures. Open the individual notice and confirm its date, exact location, direction, ramp, and closure time window. Notices may remain listed after their dates, so do not assume an older notice describes a current closure.

Check separately if your route uses the Thruway
For I-90 or a Thruway interchange, consult the Thruway Authority’s scheduled lane-closure page as well as 511NY. It is a separate source for Thruway roadwork and scheduled lane closures; checking only local NYSDOT advisories may not give you the full picture.
Assess a detour before choosing it
Compare the closure notice’s location and direction with the alternate roadways you might use. On 511NY, inspect those roads for closures, incidents, construction, and traffic speeds before leaving. The 511NY phone service can also provide alternate-route conditions. No single detour fits every trip: the best option depends on your origin, destination, travel time, and vehicle needs.

Use alerts as backup, not as a live trip check
511NY offers website, app, and phone access, and describes the service and app as free. Mobile data use may still depend on your cellular plan. You can subscribe to NY-Alert for notices tied to selected regions or routes, but those alerts are intended for serious or high-impact events—not every minor closure or work-zone change. For a specific trip, check the map and relevant advisories directly.

Work schedules and live conditions can change, so revisit the map and applicable advisories shortly before you set out. 511NY is New York’s official traffic and travel information service, but its updates should not be treated as an assurance that every condition is reported instantaneously or completely. If you need to check while already on the road, have a passenger use the phone or pull over somewhere safe first; do not interact with a mobile device while driving.
