Recommended Free Tools
Before buying a Steam game, compare its recent and lifetime reviews, read dated comments about the things that matter to you, and—if it is in Early Access—decide whether its current unfinished state is worth the price. Steam’s usual refund criteria for games are a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of playtime; Early Access playtime counts toward that limit.
How to check whether Steam reviews are recent and useful
Steam’s review score aggregates positive and negative recommendations. It is a quick signal, not a substitute for reading the reviews behind it. Steam presents recent and lifetime review views, which answer different questions: recent feedback reflects more current reception, while lifetime feedback includes opinions about earlier versions of the game. See Steamworks’ User Reviews documentation and Steam Support’s User Reviews guidance.

- Compare recent and lifetime summaries. A gap between them can be a reason to investigate what changed; it does not by itself explain why opinions differ.
- Open dated reviews. Read both positive and negative reviews that discuss your priorities, such as performance, available content, update direction, multiplayer activity, or missing features.
- Match each comment to its context. Check when it was written and whether it describes the version or conditions you expect to encounter. An older review may describe an earlier state, while a recent review may reflect a temporary issue or a particular player’s priorities.
- Use the score as a starting point. Steam describes how it treats review periods it classifies as off-topic, so a score is a platform summary rather than a complete account of every review or issue.
For a game that has changed substantially, look for evidence in the comments about the specific change you care about rather than assuming that a current score captures every part of its history.
Steam game refund eligibility: the usual 14-day and two-hour rule
Steam’s standard guidance for a game is that a refund request should be made within 14 days of purchase and the game should have less than two hours of playtime. Steam’s Common Refund Questions says online, offline, and shared-library playtime count. These are the usual criteria, not a blanket guarantee for every purchase type or circumstance. See Steam’s refund how-to and Common Refund Questions.

What changes when a game is in Early Access?
Early Access means you are buying a game that is still in development, not a promise that it will reach a particular finished state or date. Steam advises buyers to assess the game as it plays today and read the developer’s Early Access information. That information is provided in the blue Early Access section of the store page, where the developer answers Steam’s Early Access questionnaire. See Steam’s Early Access guidance.
- Judge the current build. Consider whether the available content, stability, and gameplay are worthwhile now, even if plans change.
- Read the developer’s plans and caveats. Treat planned features as intentions, not guarantees about timing or completion.
- Check update context. Steam says it adds a store-page notice if more than 12 months pass without an update and an update-type event. This is a signal about update history, not a promise of future support.
- Consider the unfinished outcome. Steam cautions that some developers may be unable to finish their game. Buy only if you are comfortable with that possibility.
Early Access games use the same standard refund criteria as other games, and their playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Check the current Early Access guidance and refund policy for the applicable details.

A practical pre-purchase comparison
If you are choosing between several games, compare them on the same four questions rather than reducing every consideration to a single review score.
