South Indian Bank’s disclosed trend through FY2025-26 is constructive: deposits, advances, profit, capital adequacy and headline asset-quality ratios all improved. That is evidence of progress, not a guarantee that the shares are safe or fairly valued. Before investing, verify that the latest quarter shows continuing improvement in net interest margin (NIM), fresh slippages, credit cost, provision coverage, capital quality, liquidity and deposit mix.

The bank’s investor-relations index lists presentations for September 2026 and June 2026. Those files are the next step for a current decision because the index confirms their availability but does not display the numerical tables. The FY2025-26 operating figures below come from a directors-report reproduction by Arihant Capital and should be reconciled with South Indian Bank’s downloadable annual-report PDF.

What the latest disclosed numbers say

The quickest way to frame South Indian Bank’s financial health is to separate direction from durability. Direction is favorable in the reported year: the balance sheet expanded, earnings increased, capital remained high and gross and net non-performing asset ratios fell. Durability still has to be tested in newer quarters and against the price you would pay for the stock.

Measure FY2024-25 (audited) FY2025-26 (reported in directors-report reproduction) How to read it
Deposits ₹107,525.60 crore ₹123,346.32 crore Funding base grew; check whether the increase came from stable, low-cost balances or expensive term and bulk deposits.
Gross advances ₹87,578.52 crore ₹100,274.05 crore Loan book expanded at a similar pace to deposits; inspect underwriting quality and concentration.
Net profit ₹1,302.88 crore ₹1,455.14 crore Profit rose, but recurring earning power depends on NIM, operating costs, other income and provisions.
Basel III CRAR 19.31% 19.66% A sizeable reported capital buffer; confirm CET1 and Tier 1 composition and the effect of future growth.
GNPA 3.20% 1.43% Gross impaired loans declined sharply; confirm that the fall reflects recoveries and upgrades rather than write-offs alone.
NNPA 0.92% 0.29% Net exposure after provisions improved; review provision coverage and fresh slippages.
RoAA 1.06% 1.08% Profitability relative to assets improved modestly; compare with peers using the same period and accounting basis.
CASA balances ₹33,729.72 crore ₹39,620.92 crore The FY2025-26 report states 17.47% growth; check CASA as a percentage of deposits and the current/savings mix.

The FY2024-25 column is from South Indian Bank’s audited annual report dated July 17, 2025. The FY2025-26 column is reproduced from the directors’ report by Arihant Capital, so treat it as a useful interim data point until you reconcile it to the bank’s official FY2025-26 annual-report PDF.

These figures do not answer whether the stock is a “safe” purchase by themselves. A bank can show better ratios while facing weaker spreads, higher funding costs, concentrated exposures or an excessive valuation. Use the following checks in order.

1. Check whether growth is funded and profitable

Compare deposits with advances

Track deposits and gross advances together for each quarter and year. When advances grow faster than deposits for a sustained period, management may have to rely on wholesale, bulk or high-rate term funding. That can lift the cost of deposits and pressure NIM. When deposits grow much faster than loans, liquidity may be ample but returns can suffer if surplus funds earn less than a loan portfolio.

For FY2024-25, deposits were ₹107,525.60 crore and advances ₹87,578.52 crore. The reported FY2025-26 figures were ₹123,346.32 crore and ₹100,274.05 crore. The roughly mid-teens expansion in both measures is more informative than either growth rate alone: ask what products, customer segments and geographies generated it, and whether the bank preserved underwriting standards while expanding.

Examine the quality of new loans

Request the investor presentation and annual report schedules that split growth by retail, small business, agriculture, corporate and other categories. A growing retail or secured portfolio is not automatically safer; unsecured consumer or concentrated commercial lending can carry different loss patterns. Look for delinquency buckets, restructuring, write-offs and the share of loans originated recently.

Calculate growth that creates value

Pair loan growth with NIM, credit cost, operating-expense growth and RoAA. Expansion that produces more interest income but requires heavy provisioning or expensive deposits may not improve shareholder returns. A useful worksheet has one row per quarter and columns for deposits, advances, NIM, net interest income, operating expenses, provisions, net profit and RoAA. Mark any quarter in which profit depends on a large treasury or other-income item rather than core lending.

2. Look past GNPA and NNPA

Understand the two headline ratios

GNPA is gross non-performing assets as a percentage of gross advances, before provisions. NNPA deducts eligible provisions and adjustments from non-performing assets, showing the residual exposure relative to net advances. Falling ratios are encouraging, but they can improve for several reasons: recoveries, upgrades, write-offs, sales to asset-reconstruction entities, denominator growth or a combination of these.

Follow the flow of stressed loans

Build a roll-forward from opening gross NPAs to closing gross NPAs. It should identify fresh slippages, recoveries, upgrades, write-offs and loans sold. Ask whether recoveries and upgrades exceed new slippages because that is a stronger sign of improving underwriting and collections than a ratio change alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

South Indian Bank’s FY2024-25 directors’ report states: “The Bank has registered a robust recovery and upgradation of NPA during the financial year 2024-25.” Read that statement alongside the movement schedule and cash recoveries. The same report says the new loan book’s GNPA and NNPA were 0.46% and 0.13%, respectively. That comparison can help you distinguish the legacy portfolio from loans originated under newer credit policies.

Check provision coverage and credit cost

Provision coverage indicates how much of gross impaired loans is already provided for. Higher coverage generally gives more protection if recoveries disappoint, but the number must be read with collateral values, write-offs and additional provisions still required. Credit cost, usually provisions relative to average loans, shows the earnings burden of asset-quality problems during a period.

For the September 2026 and June 2026 presentations, record gross and net slippages, recoveries, upgrades, write-offs, restructuring, provision coverage and credit cost. A low GNPA with rising slippages or rising credit cost deserves caution; a low GNPA accompanied by stable slippages, strong recoveries and steady coverage is more persuasive.

3. Decompose profit instead of relying on net profit

Net interest income and NIM

Net interest income is interest earned on loans and investments minus interest paid on deposits and borrowings. NIM relates that spread to earning assets. Review NIM by quarter and identify the drivers: lending yields, investment yields, deposit rates, the mix of fixed- and floating-rate loans, and the proportion of low-cost CASA funding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The available FY2025-26 summary gives net profit and RoAA but not the latest NIM or slippage tables. Obtain those from the September 2026 presentation before making a current valuation decision. A rising loan book with falling NIM may still produce higher total interest income, yet the incremental return on capital can deteriorate.

Other income and operating expenses

Separate fee income, recoveries, treasury gains, foreign-exchange income and other non-interest lines. A one-time gain can inflate quarterly profit without improving the franchise. At the same time, track employee costs, branch and technology spending and the cost-to-income ratio. Investments in distribution or systems may be sensible, but they should be assessed against subsequent deposit growth, fee generation and efficiency.

Provisions and recurring earnings

Reconcile profit before provisions with profit after provisions. If provisions fall unusually low while stressed-loan indicators remain elevated, current earnings may be flattered. Conversely, a temporary increase in provisions can be acceptable if it cleans up the book and reduces future uncertainty. Compare provision expense with slippages, recoveries, collateral and management’s disclosed overlays.

4. Test capital resilience

Start with CRAR, then inspect its components

South Indian Bank reported Basel III CRAR of 19.31% for FY2024-25 and 19.66% for FY2025-26 in the cited figures. CRAR compares regulatory capital with risk-weighted assets. It is a useful buffer measure, but the headline number does not show how much is the highest-quality common equity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the detailed capital table and record CET1, Tier 1 and total capital ratios, along with the amounts of common equity, additional Tier 1 instruments and Tier 2 capital. Check whether capital rose because of retained earnings, an equity issue, subordinated debt or a change in risk weights. Capital built from recurring profits is different from capital dependent on market issuance.

Compare capital with planned growth

Put risk-weighted-asset growth beside advances and capital growth. Rapid expansion can consume a seemingly large buffer, particularly in riskier segments. Also review the bank’s stated internal capital targets, dividend policy, stress-test results and any plans for raising capital. Do not infer that a high CRAR eliminates dilution or credit-cycle risk.

5. Analyse CASA, funding cost and liquidity

Measure the deposit mix

CASA balances increased from ₹33,729.72 crore in FY2024-25 to ₹39,620.92 crore in FY2025-26; the FY2025-26 report states 17.47% growth. Convert those balances into CASA as a percentage of total deposits, then split current and savings accounts. The percentage matters because deposits can grow while CASA share falls.

Review term-deposit rates, bulk deposits, certificates of deposit and borrowings. A bank that wins deposits by paying materially higher rates may protect volume at the expense of NIM. Compare the average cost of deposits with loan yields and NIM over several quarters rather than reacting to one month’s pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check liquidity indicators

Read the liquidity coverage ratio, high-quality liquid assets, maturity-gap statements and the share of deposits that can reprice or leave quickly. Examine whether liquidity is supported by a broad retail base or a small number of institutional balances. Strong liquidity is valuable during market stress, but excess low-yield liquidity can reduce returns in normal periods.

6. Review concentration, governance and contingent risks

Map credit concentration

Read sectoral, borrower, geography and product-level exposure tables. Identify the largest single and connected exposures, industries with cyclical earnings, and any segment where growth materially exceeds the bank’s historical mix. Ask how much collateral is available and how quickly it could be monetised in a downturn.

Investigate restructured and stressed accounts

Track restructured loans, overdue but not yet non-performing accounts, security receipts and loans transferred to asset-reconstruction entities. These categories can carry future loss risk even when they are excluded from current GNPA. Compare management’s disclosures across quarters so that an account does not appear to disappear merely because its classification changed.

Read governance disclosures

Review related-party transactions, auditor qualifications or emphasis-of-matter paragraphs, changes in the board or senior management, contingent liabilities, regulatory penalties and customer complaints. Check whether disclosures are timely and consistent between the annual report, exchange filings and investor presentations. Governance issues can damage a bank’s funding access and valuation before they appear in GNPA.

7. Compare South Indian Bank with appropriate peers

  • Deposit franchise: deposit growth, CASA ratio, retail share and cost of deposits.
  • Loan growth: advances growth by segment and the risk profile of incremental lending.
  • Asset quality: GNPA, NNPA, fresh slippages, recoveries, restructuring, provision coverage and credit cost.
  • Profitability and capital: NIM, RoAA, RoE, cost-to-income, CET1, Tier 1 and total CRAR.
  • Valuation: price-to-book and price-to-earnings relative to sustainable profitability, not a single unusually strong or weak quarter.

Do not treat a lower price-to-book ratio as an automatic bargain. A discount may reflect weaker returns, higher credit risk, lower-quality capital or a deposit franchise that is harder to scale. Conversely, a premium is defensible only if superior returns and asset quality can persist.

8. A practical document-by-document health check

  1. Download the latest official materials. Start with the audited FY2024-25 annual report dated July 17, 2025, the bank’s FY2025-26 annual-report and AGM materials, and the September 2026 and June 2026 investor presentations listed on the investor-relations index.
  2. Create a five-year and quarterly worksheet. Enter deposits, advances, CASA, NIM, net interest income, other income, operating expenses, provisions, net profit, RoAA, RoE, GNPA, NNPA, slippages, recoveries, write-offs, provision coverage, credit cost, CET1, Tier 1, CRAR and liquidity measures.
  3. Reconcile definitions. Confirm whether each ratio is quarter-end or average-period, standalone or consolidated, and reported under the same regulatory definition. Note any restatement or change in presentation.
  4. Trace asset-quality movements. Reconcile opening and closing NPAs and separately record slippages, recoveries, upgrades, write-offs, sales and restructuring.
  5. Test earnings quality. Label recurring net interest income, fee income and operating profit separately from treasury gains, recoveries and other unusual items.
  6. Stress the balance sheet. Consider what happens to NIM if deposit rates rise, to credit cost if slippages increase, and to capital if risk-weighted assets expand faster than retained earnings.
  7. Compare valuation only after the operating review. Use a sustainable earnings and book-value estimate, then compare it with similarly sized private-sector banks after adjusting for asset quality and return differences.
  8. Write an investment thesis with disqualifiers. State the two or three indicators that would invalidate your thesis, such as renewed slippage acceleration, falling CASA share, weakening CET1 or a valuation that assumes uninterrupted growth.

9. Warning signs that should delay a purchase

  • GNPA or NNPA falls mainly because of write-offs while fresh slippages and credit cost rise.
  • Recoveries and upgrades weaken, or restructured and overdue accounts increase without transparent explanation.
  • Loan growth consistently outpaces deposits and is funded by costly bulk deposits or short-term borrowings.
  • NIM contracts as deposit costs rise, while fee income or treasury gains conceal weaker core earnings.
  • Provision coverage declines materially or management reports additional provisions that could be required.
  • CET1 or Tier 1 grows slowly relative to risk-weighted assets and planned advances.
  • Liquidity coverage, high-quality liquid assets or retail-deposit stability deteriorate.
  • Large sector, borrower or geographic concentrations are paired with weak collateral or opaque disclosures.
  • Auditor comments, regulatory actions, related-party transactions or contingent liabilities become more significant.
  • The share price assumes peer-level returns even though RoAA, RoE or asset quality remains below peers.

10. What to update before a current investment decision

The FY2026-27 investor-relations index lists September 2026 and June 2026 presentations, but the index itself does not expose their numerical tables. Retrieve both presentations and update the worksheet with the latest NIM, gross and net slippages, recoveries, upgrades, credit cost, provision coverage, CET1 and Tier 1, liquidity, deposit mix and valuation inputs.

Also reconcile the reported FY2025-26 figures with South Indian Bank’s downloadable official annual-report PDF. Until that reconciliation and the latest-quarter review are complete, the defensible conclusion is that the bank’s reported trajectory improved, while the persistence and price of that improvement remain unproven.

A decision framework for investors

Constructive case

A constructive case requires more than falling GNPA. It would show deposits and advances growing together, stable or improving CASA, resilient NIM, controlled credit cost, recoveries exceeding fresh slippages, strong provision coverage, recurring profit growth and capital that remains comfortably ahead of growth needs. The valuation should leave room for an ordinary—not perfect—credit cycle.

Wait-and-watch case

Waiting is reasonable when the annual figures look better but current-quarter NIM, slippages, credit cost or CET1 data are unavailable, when FY2025-26 numbers have not yet been reconciled to the official report, or when the market price already discounts several years of strong execution. A missed entry is usually less damaging than buying without knowing which assumption supports the price.

Risk case

The risk case emerges if fresh stress returns, funding costs rise faster than loan yields, CASA weakens, capital is consumed by rapid expansion, or governance and concentration disclosures deteriorate. In that situation, low headline GNPA or a low price-to-book multiple should not be used as a substitute for evidence of recoverability and sustainable returns.
