A checklist can’t prove an advertised product is good, but it can help you judge whether the item, seller and deal have credible evidence behind them. Before paying, verify the exact product and its condition, check the seller separately from the marketplace, look beyond star ratings, examine important claims, and read the delivery and return terms. The guidance below draws on U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advice; consumer rights and remedies vary by country.
1. Identify who is selling the item
An ad may lead to the brand’s own store, a marketplace listing or a third-party seller on a marketplace. Check which one you would actually pay. A familiar marketplace name does not, by itself, establish that an individual seller or item is trustworthy.
- Look for the seller’s business name and usable contact information, such as an address, email or phone number.
- Search the seller and site name with terms such as “complaint” or “scam.” Read what the results say and consider whether they concern the same business.
- If the listing is on a marketplace, read the buyer-protection terms that apply to this seller and item. Find out how to report a problem and whether a claim deadline applies.

2. Confirm the exact product and its condition
Make sure you can identify what is being offered. Match the brand and model number, or compare a full set of specifications if there is no model number. Then compare that same version with listings from independent retailers or reputable expert reviewers. Similar-looking products can differ in features, included accessories or condition.

Read the entire listing rather than relying on the ad headline or first photo. Check the specifications, what is included, shipping charges, fees and total price. Pay attention to words such as “refurbished,” “vintage,” “used,” “open-box,” “as is” or “close-out”: they may describe an item that is not new or may limit what the seller promises about its condition.
For a unique used item or any purchase where condition matters, ask for clear photos of the actual item. Stock photos show a product type, not necessarily the specific item the seller has or its present condition. A very low price for an expensive branded product can be a counterfeit warning, but price alone does not prove that it is counterfeit.

3. Compare the evidence, not just the advertised price
When weighing two listings for the same product, compare the same model and condition on both sides. A lower headline price may not be cheaper after shipping, handling, taxes or other fees. Check the delivery promise, return and refund terms, marketplace protection and payment method alongside the price.

4. Use reviews as clues, not proof
Look across multiple review sources and read recent reviews, including both favorable and critical ones. Consider who wrote each review, whether the reviewer has a meaningful history, where the review was posted and whether an incentive was disclosed. A star average does not tell you whether the reviews concern the exact model or whether they are reliable.
Watch for unusual clusters of reviews or other patterns that deserve closer inspection, but do not assume you can spot every fake review by its wording or appearance. The FTC cautions that fake reviews are not always obvious and can be positive or negative. Reviews can help you find questions to investigate; they do not verify product quality on their own. 5. Ask what supports important product claims
Claims about performance, features, safety, price or effectiveness may matter to your buying decision. Look for evidence that supports the specific claim, not merely enthusiastic ad copy or customer testimonials. The FTC says advertisers should have a reasonable basis for express and implied claims consumers take from an ad; that does not mean the FTC has verified each advertisement or certified the product.
Be especially cautious with health or safety claims. Seek appropriate evidence from authoritative sources or the relevant regulator or standards body for the product category. A testimonial may describe one person’s experience, but it does not by itself establish an objective claim that requires evidence. FTC: Advertising FAQ’s: A Guide for Small Business

6. Read delivery, return and refund terms before checkout
Before paying, confirm whether the item is returnable, who pays return postage, the return deadline, any restocking fee and how a refund is handled. Check whether marketplace protection covers this particular seller and item, and how quickly you must report a problem.
For U.S. purchases, FTC consumer guidance says that when a seller does not state a shipping time, a rule generally requires the seller to ship within 30 days after receiving the buyer’s name, address and payment, or permission to charge the account. This is a shipping timeframe described in FTC guidance, not a measure of product quality; its application depends on the transaction. FTC: Online Shopping
7. Pay in a way that gives you options, and keep records
The FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible because legal protections may help in some transaction or delivery problems. Your rights and dispute process depend on the issuer, the facts and your jurisdiction. Check your card issuer’s terms if you may need to dispute a charge.
HTTPS encrypts a connection; it is not a trust seal. As the FTC puts it, “The ‘s’ means the site is encrypted — but it doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate site.” FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace
