To value a Pokémon card reliably, identify the exact print first, inspect both sides under angled light, assign a conservative raw-condition tier, confirm rarity from the set checklist, and compare recent sales of the same variant. Only then can you decide whether professional grading is worthwhile. A card’s rarity symbol alone is not a price, and an online asking price is not proof of market value.
Start with the exact card identity
Two cards can show the same Pokémon and artwork style yet have very different prices because they come from different sets, languages, finishes, print runs or promotional releases. Record the identifying details before looking at prices.
Use this identification checklist
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon name | The name exactly as printed, including any form or special designation | Names can repeat across many sets and variants. |
| Set symbol or set code | The symbol or code printed on the card | Nearly all cards use one tied to a specific product release. Its location varies by set, so do not assume it is always in the same corner. |
| Card number | The collector number, such as the number shown in the set numbering | The number distinguishes cards within a set and helps confirm whether a card is part of the numbered set or a special variant. |
| Language | English or the card’s actual language | Prices and demand can differ substantially by language and sales region. |
| Edition or promo mark | Any edition text, product stamp or promotional designation | Promotional cards may use a Black Star symbol, but not every promo has the same indicator. |
| Finish | Regular, holo, reverse holo or another foil treatment | Different finishes can have different card numbers, checklists and markets. |
| Parallel or variant | Any alternate artwork, border, foil pattern or numbered parallel | A visually similar parallel can sell for a very different amount from the standard version. |
Photograph the front and back alongside your notes. A clear image of the set symbol, number and finish is useful when asking a marketplace or collector to verify an identification. If a symbol or code is hard to read, confirm it against the set checklist rather than guessing from the artwork.
Inspect condition on the front and back
Condition is evaluated across four broad areas: centering, corners, edges and surface, with print quality also considered. Inspect the card out of any sleeve in bright, indirect light; then tilt it slowly so scratches, dents and gloss changes catch the light. Examine the back as carefully as the front because a clean front does not make a card Near Mint if the back has whitening, a crease or other damage.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to check
- Centering: Compare the width of the borders on each side and at the top and bottom. Note whether the image or border is visibly shifted.
- Corners: Look for whitening, rounding, bends, fraying or a corner that has been pushed inward.
- Edges: Check every edge for chips, whitening, nicks, dents and separation of the layers.
- Surface: Tilt the card to find scratches, scuffs, print lines, indentations, dents, stains, residue, gloss loss and creases.
- Print quality: Record miscuts, ink spots, alignment problems, missing foil and other manufacturing defects. A print defect is still part of the card’s condition assessment, even when it occurred at the factory.
- Alteration or writing: Look for handwriting, erasures, cleaning residue, trimming or any other change that could affect authenticity or grade.
- Folds and creases: A crease can be visible only at an angle and may be easier to feel than to see. Never bend the card to test it.
Use a clean surface and dry hands. Do not wipe, polish, press or attempt to flatten a card while assessing it; those actions can create additional damage or make a later authenticity review more difficult.
Assign a conservative raw-condition tier
TCGplayer’s 2025 condition standards use five raw categories: Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged. These are marketplace descriptions, not the same as a third-party numeric grade. A card must meet the selected tier on both sides. When two tiers seem possible, price it using the lower tier until a buyer or grader establishes otherwise.
| Raw label | How to use it when checking your card | Pricing discipline |
|---|---|---|
| Near Mint (NM) | Reserve this for a card with no material wear visible under careful inspection. Confirm that the back, corners and surface support the same assessment as the front. | Use NM prices only when the entire card consistently fits the tier. |
| Lightly Played (LP) | Use when minor handling or edge wear is present but the card remains broadly clean and free of major damage. | Compare with LP transactions, not NM listings. |
| Moderately Played (MP) | Use when wear is clearly visible or several smaller defects affect the card’s appearance. | Do not average MP with LP or NM prices. |
| Heavily Played (HP) | Use when substantial wear, multiple defects or a prominent flaw is obvious during normal inspection. | Seek sales of HP copies; high-grade examples are not useful comparables. |
| Damaged | Use when a serious defect such as a major crease, stain, tear, writing, severe surface damage or other substantial impairment is present. | Expect a separate, much smaller market from ordinary played cards. |
These descriptions help you choose a realistic raw-market comparison; they do not guarantee what a marketplace moderator or grading company will assign. Keep notes and close-up photographs of every defect so a later buyer understands why you selected the tier.

Rarity is an identification clue, not a standalone valuation. Pokémon rarity symbols have changed over time, and the same-looking symbol can mean different things in different eras or products. TCGplayer notes that English symbols have changed, while PSA describes common, uncommon, rare, secret rare and promo indicators. Always confirm the set checklist, card number and variant before comparing prices.

Common indicators
| Indicator or description | What it can tell you | What it cannot tell you by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Common or uncommon symbol | The card’s rarity category within that release | How many copies exist overall, or what collectors will pay. |
| Rare symbol | That the card is in a rarer category than common or uncommon for its product | Whether it is more valuable than a popular common, alternate artwork or scarce promo. |
| Secret rare or a number beyond the set total | A special rarity designation that often requires checking the full checklist | A guaranteed price; demand and condition still control the market. |
| Black Star or other promo mark | Often identifies a promotional card, depending on the release | That every promo uses the same mark or that all promos are scarce. |
| Holo, reverse holo or other foil | The card’s finish or parallel treatment | Which version you own unless the card number and checklist confirm it. |
To verify a suspected rare card, write down the symbol, number and finish, then compare all three with the set checklist. A holo and reverse holo can share a name and artwork while representing different entries. Do not use a rarity symbol from one era to interpret a card from another.
Estimate market value from matching evidence
Market value is the amount comparable buyers have recently paid for the exact card in a comparable condition and sales region. Build the estimate from several matching transactions or market listings instead of choosing the highest number you can find.
Search with a complete description
- Enter the Pokémon name together with the set name or code and card number.
- Add the language and finish, such as regular, holo or reverse holo.
- Specify the raw condition tier, or the grading company and numeric grade for a slabbed copy.
- Exclude different variants, reprints and unrelated products that share the character name.
- Collect several recent completed sales or market records. Keep the date, sale geography and condition with each record.
Completed transactions are stronger evidence than unsold asking prices. A seller can list a card at any amount; that does not show that a buyer accepted it. If only asking prices are available, label the result as an asking-price range rather than a confirmed market value.

| Comparison factor | How to handle it |
|---|---|
| Raw versus graded | Never combine raw cards with graded copies in one average. Record the grading company, numeric grade and, where relevant, qualifiers separately. |
| Exact print and variant | Match set, number, language, finish, promo status and parallel. A near match can produce a misleading estimate. |
| Condition | Compare NM with NM, LP with LP and so on. If your card is between tiers, use the lower tier for a conservative estimate. |
| Timing | Record sale dates. Demand, new set releases and supply can move prices, so an old sale may not represent today’s market. |
| Geography and currency | Keep sales from the same region together and convert currencies explicitly if you must combine them. Shipping, taxes and local availability can change the amount a buyer effectively pays. |
| Character and artwork demand | Popularity, artwork and collector interest can make a less rare card worth more than a technically rarer one. |
Build a defensible estimate
Enter each matching sale in a simple sheet with the date, venue, region, condition, grade if applicable, sale amount and notes about defects. Remove obvious outliers such as a damaged copy in a mostly Near Mint group, a bundle sale or a listing that never sold. Use the remaining transactions to describe a range and a central estimate, and state whether it is based on completed sales or only current asks.

Do not claim a universal dollar threshold for a profitable grading decision. Fees, shipping, insurance, selling commissions, turnaround time and the eventual grade vary, and authoritative sources do not establish one current threshold that applies to every card.
Decide whether professional grading is justified
Grading can authenticate a card and assign a condition grade, but it adds cost, handling time and shipping risk. PSA distinguishes authentication, which verifies originality or genuineness, from grading, which assesses quality and condition. A card may be worth grading because of rarity, scarcity or sentimental importance, including a vintage card that is unlikely to receive a high grade.
Use this decision framework
| Question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Is the exact print scarce or strongly demanded? | Research graded sales of that same print and continue evaluating. | Raw-market pricing may make grading unnecessary. |
| Does the card have a realistic chance of a materially better graded price? | Model several possible grades, not only the best outcome. | Keep it raw unless authentication or preservation has independent value. |
| Are centering, corners, edges, surface and print quality consistent with your target grade? | Inspect again under angled light and document defects. | Use a lower expected grade in your calculation. |
| Will the price difference cover every cost? | Include grading, shipping, insurance, selling fees and your time before submitting. | Do not grade solely because a raw listing looks expensive. |
| Is sentimental or long-term protection value important? | Grading can still make sense even when the financial return is uncertain. | Choose the lower-cost protection method that meets your goal. |
Interpret PSA’s published grade context
PSA describes a Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card.” Its standards state that the image should be centered within approximately 55/45 percent on the front and 75/25 percent on the reverse. Those centering tolerances are guidelines within a broader assessment; corners, edges, surface and print quality still matter.

A card with a common grade distribution can still receive a lower grade because of one crease, dent, stain or printing problem.

Prepare the card safely for submission
- Handle the card by its edges with clean, dry hands.
- Place it in a correctly sized penny sleeve without forcing the corners.
- Put the sleeved card in a semi-rigid holder, following the grading service’s current submission instructions.
- Photograph the card and holder before shipping, and record the submission contents.
- Use the service’s current declared-value, shipping, insurance and packaging requirements. Fees and turnaround times change, so verify them immediately before submitting.
- Package the holder so it cannot slide, bend or press against the card during transit.
Do not clean, trim, press, recolor or otherwise alter the card to chase a higher grade. An alteration can lower the result or prevent a straightforward assessment.

Pricing the wrong variant
Symptom: Your search returns a wide range that seems inexplicable. Fix: Recheck set code, card number, language, promo status and finish. Remove every result that does not match all fields.
Using an asking price as proof
Symptom: A high listing makes the card appear valuable, but no comparable copy has sold. Fix: Treat it as an unverified ask and look for completed transactions or clearly label your estimate as a listing range.
