Switch 2 supports many Switch games, but Nintendo warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible.
Is this Switch game compatible with Switch 2?
Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games can run on Switch 2, but compatibility is not universal. Some games may be unsupported or have limitations. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for the title’s current status and any game-specific notes rather than relying on the fact that it is a Switch game.

Nintendo Support’s general guidance is: “Some Nintendo Switch games also offer free updates or paid upgrades that bring additional content or improved performance when the game is played on Nintendo Switch 2.” That describes possible updates and upgrades, not a guarantee that every game has one.
How to check a game before buying
- Identify the exact listing. Determine whether it is the original Nintendo Switch game, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, or a standalone upgrade pack. A Switch 2 Edition bundles the original game with its upgrade pack.
- Check compatibility for that title. Use Nintendo’s compatibility information and read the title-specific notes. Do not assume that a listing for Switch automatically confirms full Switch 2 compatibility.
- Look for an upgrade pack if you already own the Switch game. Search the exact title in Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a retailer selling Nintendo games. Only select games have upgrade packs, and the added features differ by game.
- Check the actual price and membership terms. Some packs are available at no additional cost to active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members; others may require payment. Confirm the current terms for that game.
- Confirm the region before paying. Check your Nintendo Account country/eShop and the region the software or code is intended for. Nintendo says eShop cards are region-specific, and upgrade-pack compatibility depends on the software.
- Review what the purchase includes. Compare the Switch 2 Edition bundle with the original game plus a separately purchased pack only if both options exist for the title. Nintendo says the retail Switch 2 Edition and the same edition assembled using an upgrade pack contain the same content.
Do I have to buy the game again for Switch 2?
Not necessarily. If you already own a physical or digital version of a game that has an upgrade pack, Nintendo says you can buy the pack through eShop, Nintendo Store, or a retailer selling Nintendo games. The pack adds the Switch 2 Edition enhancements to the existing game; check the specific listing for availability, price, and what it includes.

If you do not own the original game, a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is one option when offered. It includes both the game and its upgrade pack. Compare its current price with the cost of buying the original game and pack separately rather than assuming one route is cheaper.
What does a Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack include?
There is no single set of improvements for every game. Depending on the title, an upgrade pack can add visual changes, new features, or modes. Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack listing, for example, shows a price of $9.99 USD and says eligible active Expansion Pack members can obtain it at no additional cost. That is a game-specific example, not a standard upgrade price.

Read the individual pack listing to find the included content and whether your membership qualifies. Nintendo does not state a universal price or promise that all upgrade packs are included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
Can I upgrade a physical Switch game?
For a title with an available upgrade pack, Nintendo says owners of either the physical or digital Switch version can purchase the pack. Keep the physical game card available when you play; a digital upgrade does not turn a physical copy into a digital game. Confirm that the exact physical edition you own is compatible with the pack.

For digital games and downloadable content, Nintendo treats purchases as virtual game cards. A compatible virtual game card must be loaded on the console in use. Nintendo says loaded software can be played offline and by other users on that console, and virtual game cards can be loaded or ejected between linked Switch 2 and Switch systems. See Nintendo’s virtual game card guidance for the current loading details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will an eShop code or upgrade pack from another region work?
Do not assume that a code, eShop card, downloadable content, or upgrade pack from another region will work with your game. Nintendo says eShop cards are region-specific and upgrade-pack region compatibility depends on the software. Its guidance is to buy software and packs intended for your console’s region. Check the account country, store region, and the game’s region before purchasing, especially for cross-region DLC or codes.

What to check after buying an upgrade pack
- Install any required software update; Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance says an update may be needed in addition to the pack.
- If the pack was purchased separately as digital content, confirm its virtual game card is loaded on the console you intend to use.
- If the pack does not appear or work, recheck that it matches the game and region, then consult Nintendo’s support guidance for the specific software.
