Inspect a Darkhold Destiny Arcanum card in four separate categories—surface, corners, edges/cut, and centering—then verify its print, stock, and provenance against a known genuine Magic card. Do not clean, bend, recolor, trim, or otherwise alter it. Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny is scheduled for release on April 9, 2027. The official Arcanum Bundle is expected to contain eight booster packs, full-art Bifrost basic lands, mechanically unique Arcanum promo cards with exclusive art, one Collector Booster, and a Spindown die. Because the product page says its images are digital renderings rather than actual cards, those images identify the treatment and layout but cannot establish the final print quality of an individual card.
First, confirm which Darkhold Destiny card you have
Write down the exact card name, collector number, language, finish, and treatment before judging condition. Distinguish a regular card from a foil, borderless, showcase, or Arcanum promo version. Also record how you obtained it: an unopened Arcanum Bundle, a draft or set booster, a Collector Booster, or a secondary-market listing. Those details let you compare like with like and preserve a useful chain of provenance if the card is later sold, graded, or challenged as counterfeit.
Use official references for identity, not perfection
Compare the card’s frame, symbols, collector number, and treatment with Wizards of the Coast’s official Darkhold Destiny product and card-image references. Use the references to confirm what the card is supposed to look like. Do not treat a digital product rendering as proof that your physical copy should have identical color, gloss, centering, or tiny print details.
Document the starting condition
Photograph the front, back, four corners, and any suspected defect before moving the card. Include the packaging, receipt, listing, seller name, and messages when available. A straight-on image and a second image under raking light are more useful than one reflective photograph, especially for foil cards.

Prepare a safe inspection station
- Wash and dry your hands. Oils and moisture can transfer to the card and obscure a surface judgment.
- Work on a clean, dry, non-abrasive surface. Keep drinks, food, adhesive, and loose debris away from the card.
- Handle the card by its edges. Do not drag it across the table or press a finger into the artwork.
- Use a bright diffuse lamp for an overall view and a low-angle light from the side to expose scratches, dents, indentations, roller lines, print lines, stains, and differences in gloss.
- Use a 5–10× loupe or a phone’s macro camera to examine corners, edge fibers, registration, and fine surface marks. Magnification can reveal a problem; it does not by itself prove whether that problem is factory-made or later damage.
Foil glare can hide defects at one angle and exaggerate harmless reflections at another. Tilt a foil slowly through the light rather than judging it from a single position.
Inspect the four condition areas separately
Surface
Scan the entire front and back for scratches, scuffs, dents, pressure marks, indentations, creases, stains, roller or print lines, ink irregularities, and loss of gloss. Look at dark fields, flat color areas, text boxes, and foiled highlights separately; a defect may be visible in one area but disappear in another.
A line that follows the direction of manufacturing rollers can be different from a later scratch. Photograph it at low angle and compare the same region on another genuine copy if one is available. Do not polish, wipe, or apply liquid in an attempt to make the mark disappear.
Corners
Check all four corners on both faces for whitening, dings, bends, rounding, compression, or a lifted layer. A tiny white dot can be factory edge wear or damage acquired after opening. Record its location and compare it with another copy before assigning blame or a grade.
Edges
Follow the entire perimeter for whitening, chips, fraying, nicks, peeling, or rough cuts. Compare the front and back edge color and apparent thickness. An unnaturally sharp, wavy, or inconsistent edge can indicate trimming, while a small isolated nick may simply be handling damage. Do not cut or sand an edge to make it look cleaner; alteration can make the card ineligible for grading.

Centering and cut
Compare the left and right border widths and then the top and bottom widths on both faces. A card can be well centered yet have a serious surface or edge defect, so centering is only one part of condition.
Separate ordinary off-centering from a miscut. Off-centering means the printed image is shifted within an otherwise normal cut. A miscut may show an abnormal edge, missing border, or part of a neighboring card. Professional grading treats centering and miscut as distinct issues, and an unusual cut should be photographed rather than “corrected.”
Measure centering instead of relying on your eye
Use a transparent ruler with millimeter markings or a calibrated image. Measure the visible border at the widest points, not at a corner where the frame may taper. Calculate each axis as:
smaller border ÷ larger border
Express the result as a ratio for left/right and separately for top/bottom. For example, borders measuring 3 mm and 4 mm produce a 3:4 relationship, or 75:25 when expressed as the smaller share of the total pair. That arithmetic is an estimate of the visible border, not a guarantee of a grade.

These ratios come from PSA’s current published grading standards (accessed in 2026). They are not a promise from Wizards about Darkhold Destiny tolerances. Border contrast, registration, a miscut, and the overall visual balance can affect a borderline decision even when a ruler measurement appears to meet the reference.

How to tell a printing defect from damage
Factory variation is not automatically collectible damage, and a clean-looking front does not rule out a problem on the back. Use a repeatable comparison:

- Repeat the light test: view the mark under diffuse and low-angle light. A pressure dent often changes with the angle; a color shift may remain visible in flat light.
- Check both sides: a front indentation can correspond to a raised or compressed area on the reverse.
- Compare another copy: matching lines, registration shifts, or edge characteristics on multiple genuine copies may indicate a production variation rather than one card being mishandled.
- Record location and size: note whether a mark reaches an edge, crosses artwork, affects text, or changes gloss. This is more useful to a buyer or grader than a vague label such as “near mint.”
Do not attempt to press a dent flat, recolor whitening, remove a stain, or clean a fingerprint. PSA lists trimming, recoloring, restoration, altered stock, and cleaning among reasons a card can receive no grade.
Screen an Arcanum card for counterfeit signs
No single home test is conclusive. Compare several characteristics with a known genuine Magic card from the same era or product family, ideally one obtained through a reliable channel.
Print and design checks
- Examine rosette and other fine print patterns through a loupe. Genuine micro-detail should remain sharp rather than becoming a coarse blur or an obvious repeating digital pattern.
- Inspect text edges, mana symbols, set markings, and collector-number characters for incorrect weight, spacing, or fuzzy registration.
- Compare color balance and opacity, including how much the front artwork shows through when viewed against a consistent light source.
- Compare gloss and texture. Wizards notes that counterfeit cards may feel or look different and may chip or fray unlike genuine cards.
Stock and edge checks
Compare the card’s stiffness, surface feel, and edge construction with the reference card without bending either one. Look for an unusual layer line, a different edge color, or fibers that separate in a way the genuine card does not. One tactile difference is not enough to convict a card; humidity, storage, and different finishes can change how a legitimate card feels.
Provenance and seller checks
Ask where the card came from and whether the listing identifies it as an original or a proxy. Wizards warns that proxy copies are not originals. Save the listing’s photographs and wording before a seller edits or removes them. A credible transaction history and sealed-product receipt do not replace physical inspection, but an anonymous listing with inconsistent details raises the risk substantially.

Why the bend test is a poor routine shortcut
Wizards describes a bend test for nonfoil Magic cards, but says to use it at your own risk, never on foil cards, and warns that repeated bending eventually damages genuine cards. Treat it as an exceptional last resort, not a standard inspection step. For a suspected high-value fake, stop handling the card and seek an experienced dealer or professional authenticator instead.
Check sealed Darkhold Destiny product for resealing
If the card is still in a sealed product, inspect the package before opening it. Wizards recommends buying from a reputable dealer and checking that booster boxes carry a Wizards of the Coast stamp and that the plastic appears factory sealed.
Pack and box warning signs
- Look for torn, cloudy, loose, or uneven plastic and for seams that do not match the rest of the wrapping.
- Inspect booster-pack seals for vertical heat striations, one of the checks Wizards lists when looking for resealing.
- Compare the printed treatment, language, and product configuration with the official listing. Do not use a digital rendering to judge tiny color or gloss differences.
- Read the auction or marketplace fine print. “Proxy,” “custom,” or “replica” language means you are not buying an original card, even if the photograph resembles one.
If the packaging is inconsistent, unusually repaired, or cannot be traced to a reputable seller, do not buy it. Photograph the package before opening and keep the shipping carton and invoice if you proceed.

Grading is most useful when authenticity, condition, or the card’s likely sale value materially affects a transaction. It is not a substitute for inspecting the card first.

PSA evaluates centering, corners, edges, surface, print defects, staining, and authenticity. Its published no-grade reasons include trimming, restoration, recoloring, altered stock, cleaning, questionable authenticity, and minimum-size problems. Photograph the card and document provenance before submission. A grader’s published “virtually perfect” standard for a PSA Gem Mint 10 is a high bar, not a promise that a card with acceptable centering will receive that label.

When not to submit
- Do not submit a card you have cleaned, pressed, recolored, trimmed, or treated with a substance.
- Do not submit while authenticity is unresolved; obtain an independent opinion first.
- Do not assume an unusual miscut or factory line will increase value. Record it accurately and let the grader classify it.
What to do if you suspect a counterfeit
Wizards of the Coast states that it does not provide a card-verification service. Its support guidance says cards sent for analysis will not be returned and that the submitter will not receive a genuine-or-counterfeit determination.
- Stop altering or repeatedly handling the card. Place it in a protective sleeve and rigid holder without pressing on the surface.
- Preserve the original listing, seller profile, messages, receipt, payment record, shipping label, packaging, and all photographs.
- Photograph the card front and back, the suspected print or edge details, and the packaging under both diffuse and low-angle light.
- Report the suspected fraud through the marketplace or payment platform while its dispute window is open.
- Follow the relevant law-enforcement or Internet Fraud Complaint Center reporting guidance for your jurisdiction. State what was advertised, what was received, and which evidence you retained.
Do not mail the card to Wizards expecting authentication or a return. If the amount at stake is significant, use a professional authenticator or an established specialist who can explain how the card will be handled and what written conclusion, if any, will be provided.
Store and transport the card after inspection
Once the inspection is complete, return the card to a clean, correctly sized sleeve and a rigid holder. Keep it away from heat, moisture, direct sunlight, and pressure that could create a dent or warp. Store the holder upright or flat without heavy objects on top. Keep the provenance notes with the card rather than relying on memory; the record can matter as much as the visual condition when a future buyer asks whether the card came from an official Arcanum Bundle, a particular booster, or an unknown listing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the Arcanum promo cards guaranteed to be perfectly centered?
No. The Arcanum Bundle identifies the promo treatment and exclusive art, but no Darkhold Destiny-specific centering tolerance is established. Measure each card and treat PSA’s ratios as grading references rather than a Wizards factory promise.
Can I use the official product image to prove my card is genuine?
No. Wizards describes those images as digital renderings. They help identify the product and treatment, while authenticity requires comparison of print, texture, stock, edges, and provenance.
Should I bend a nonfoil card to test it?
Only as an exceptional last resort and at your own risk. Wizards warns that bending can damage even genuine cards; never bend a foil card. A suspected valuable counterfeit is better handled by an experienced specialist.
What happens if I send a suspected fake to Wizards?
