To check Lido token permissions, inspect stETH and wstETH as separate ERC-20 contracts on the network where your assets are held. Use a reputable allowance viewer such as Revoke.cash or the correct Etherscan-family explorer, verify the spender and amount, and revoke only after confirming the token contract and chain. Disconnecting a wallet from a decentralized application does not remove an allowance that was already granted.
A successful revocation normally sets the selected allowance to zero. The transaction must be sent by the wallet that owns the approval and usually consumes the network’s native gas token. If a malicious spender has already transferred assets, revoking the allowance stops future use of that permission but cannot undo the completed transfer.
What stETH and wstETH approvals actually authorize
An ERC-20 approval is a spending permission stored in the token contract. When you approve a spender, that address can call transferFrom to move up to the approved amount from your wallet. The permission is independent of whether a decentralized application currently shows your wallet as connected.
Lido describes stETH as an “ERC-20 rebasing token, which represents staked ether.” Oracle reports update holder balances over time. wstETH is an “ERC-20 value-accruing token wrapper for stETH.” Its token balance does not rebase in the same way; instead, each wstETH represents a changing amount of stETH as value accrues.

Those are different contracts and different approval ledgers. A spender approved for stETH is not automatically approved for wstETH, and an approval on one chain does not authorize transfers on another chain. Review each token row separately.
stETH and wstETH identity checklist
| Token | How the balance behaves | Standards documented by Lido | What to verify before revoking |
|---|---|---|---|
| stETH | Rebasing balance updated through oracle reports | ERC-20 and ERC-2612 Permit | Network, stETH contract address, spender, allowance and deadline if a permit was used |
| wstETH | Non-rebasing wrapper balance whose value in stETH changes | ERC-20, ERC-2612 Permit and EIP-712 | Network, wstETH deployment address, spender, allowance and any active permit details |
For Ethereum mainnet, Lido publishes the stETH contract address as 0xae7ab96520DE3A18E5e111B5EaAb095312D7fE84. Do not infer a wstETH address, or reuse an Ethereum-mainnet address on another network. Select the chain first and use the token address published for that deployment. Bridged and multichain representations can have different contracts and may not offer the same unwrap behavior.
Why disconnecting your wallet does not revoke an allowance
Disconnecting removes the dapp’s active session or connection request; it does not rewrite the allowance recorded by the token contract. Ethereum.org explains that a project can still use a previously granted token allowance after you disconnect the wallet. The approval remains until the owner changes it, commonly by setting it to zero or replacing it with a lower amount.

There are two separate actions:
- Disconnect: ends the current wallet-to-website connection in the interface.
- Revoke or reduce: sends a transaction (or, for a permit-capable token, signs an allowance change) that changes the on-chain permission.
Therefore, “no wallet connection” is not evidence that your stETH or wstETH is safe from an old spender. Check the contract allowance directly.
Before you inspect or revoke anything
Prepare the details that prevent a wrong-chain or wrong-token action. A revocation is itself an on-chain operation, so an incorrect selection can waste gas or leave the risky permission untouched.

- Identify the holding network. Determine whether the balance is on Ethereum mainnet or another supported network. Network names in wallets can be similar, and a bridged token can use a different contract.
- Confirm the token contract. Match the address shown by the allowance tool or explorer with the address published for that deployment. For mainnet stETH, the canonical address is
0xae7ab96520DE3A18E5e111B5EaAb095312D7fE84. - Use the owner wallet. The wallet that owns the approval must authorize the revoke transaction. An observer or a different account cannot revoke it merely by knowing the address.
- Hold native gas. Keep enough of the network’s native asset to pay transaction fees. Token balances alone do not pay ERC-20 approval transactions.
- Secure the access path. Open the allowance service from a trusted bookmark or type its address yourself. A search advertisement or look-alike site can request a new approval instead of showing existing ones.
Method 1: inspect and revoke with Revoke.cash
Revoke.cash provides address lookup, network selection, spender filtering and revoke transactions. Its guidance notes that approvals can remain active indefinitely and recommends sorting recent approvals first when investigating a suspicious signature.
- Open the official Revoke.cash site directly. Check the domain and certificate before entering an address or connecting a wallet. If you are investigating a possible compromise, begin with a public address lookup rather than signing anything.
- Enter the wallet address or ENS name, or connect the owner wallet. Address lookup lets you inspect permissions without granting the site a new wallet connection. A connected wallet is required later to submit the revoke transaction.
- Select the network that actually holds the token. Do not rely on the network currently selected in your wallet until you compare it with the chain where the stETH or wstETH balance and approval exist.
- Find both token rows. Search or filter for stETH and then wstETH. Treat them as independent reviews; an approval shown under one symbol does not cover the other contract.
- Read the spender, amount and activity. Record the spender address, allowance amount and the last activity displayed. An exact allowance may be limited to a planned action; a very large or effectively unlimited value deserves closer review.
- Investigate the spender address. Open it in a block explorer and compare the verified contract and transaction history with the protocol, router, bridge or vault you intentionally used. An unknown, obsolete or unrelated spender is a revocation candidate.
- Choose only the approval you intend to remove. Click its revoke control, inspect the wallet’s transaction summary and confirm the token contract, spender and network before signing. Reject any request that asks for an unrelated transfer, seed phrase or broad new approval.
- Wait for confirmation and check again. Refresh the token row after the transaction is finalized. A zero allowance is the expected revoked state. If the amount is still present, check that you used the owner wallet and the same chain, then inspect the transaction status.
How to interpret a Revoke.cash result
- Zero allowance: the spender can no longer use that ERC-20 approval through
transferFrom. - Reduced but nonzero allowance: only the remaining amount is authorized; decide whether that residual permission is still necessary.
- Unlimited or maximum-value allowance: the contract can generally draw any amount available under the token’s allowance rules, so revoke it when the integration is no longer needed.
- Recent unexplained approval: prioritize it for investigation, especially if it follows an unexpected typed-data signature or unfamiliar site visit.
Method 2: inspect and revoke with Etherscan Token Approvals
Etherscan-family explorers provide a Token Approvals page for the relevant chain. The page is chain-specific: use the explorer corresponding to the network where the approval was created.
- Open the correct chain’s explorer and Token Approvals page. Confirm the network name in the explorer header before entering an address.
- Enter the wallet address and choose ERC-20 approvals. This view lists token contracts, spenders and allowance values associated with that address.
- Show all approvals when a filter is available. A filtered or “active” view can hide entries you need for an incident review. Enable the option that displays the complete approval set.
- Locate the stETH and wstETH entries. Check the token contract address, spender address and allowance amount. Do not identify a token by symbol alone because symbols can be reused by unrelated contracts.
- Use the row’s Revoke control. Select only the row you have verified. The explorer may prepare a transaction that changes the allowance to zero.
- Connect the wallet that owns the address. Etherscan documentation states that only the address owner is allowed to revoke connected smart contracts. Review the transaction details in the wallet, including the destination contract, gas and data, before signing.
- Wait for confirmation, refresh and verify. The row should show zero or the reduced value you intended. A pending, failed or dropped transaction has not changed the permission.
When the explorer and allowance service disagree
Temporary indexing delays, chain selection, proxy contracts and different display conventions can make two interfaces look inconsistent. Compare the raw network, token contract, spender address and the latest confirmed transaction. If the explorer shows a confirmed zero allowance while a third-party dashboard still shows an old value, treat the confirmed on-chain state as authoritative after allowing the indexer time to update.
How to recognize a risky approval
No single allowance value proves fraud. Triage each permission across token identity, spender, amount, timing and current need.
| Question | Lower-risk indication | Warning sign | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Token and chain | Address matches the intended deployment on the selected network | Unknown, duplicated or bridged contract you did not expect | Pause and verify the deployment before signing anything |
| Spender identity | Verified address belongs to a protocol or router you knowingly used | Unrecognized, obsolete or unrelated address | Investigate in a block explorer and revoke if unnecessary |
| Allowance size | Exact or capped amount sized for one operation | Unlimited or unusually large amount | Reduce or revoke unless an active position genuinely needs it |
| Recency | Created during a known deposit, swap, bridge or withdrawal | Created near an unexpected site visit or signature | Prioritize review of recent approvals and permit signatures |
| Ongoing need | Required for an open position or planned withdrawal | No longer used, abandoned integration or failed transaction | Revoke after confirming that removing it will not interrupt a needed action |
Keep transaction hashes and timestamps for suspicious entries. They help you correlate an approval with a dapp interaction and provide useful evidence if assets were later moved.

Unlimited allowances and exact amounts
An allowance can be an exact token quantity, a capped amount or a maximum-style value commonly described as unlimited. With an exact allowance, a spender can draw only up to that number unless you approve more. With an unlimited allowance, the practical exposure is the token balance you hold while the allowance remains active, subject to the token contract’s rules.
Unlimited does not automatically mean malicious. Some protocols request it to avoid asking for a new approval on every deposit or swap. The decision is whether the spender is trusted, the integration is still needed and the convenience is worth the exposure. If you stop using the protocol, revoking removes the unused permission without requiring you to move the tokens.
ERC-2612 permits: approvals without an approve transaction
Lido documents ERC-2612 Permit support for Ethereum-mainnet stETH and wstETH. A permit uses an EIP-712 typed-data signature to set or change an allowance, so the approval may not appear as a traditional approve transaction initiated by your wallet. wstETH also documents EIP-712 support.
Treat an unexplained permit request with the same caution as an on-chain approval. Before signing, inspect:
- Domain: the token name, version, chain ID and verifying contract should match the intended token deployment.
- Spender: confirm the exact address that will receive the allowance; a familiar dapp name is not enough.
- Amount: distinguish a small capped value from a maximum-style allowance.
- Deadline: a short expiry limits how long the signed permission can be used; an unexpectedly distant deadline deserves scrutiny.
- Nonce and purpose: verify that the request is consistent with an action you initiated and not an unsolicited “claim” or airdrop prompt.
A permit signature can be relayed by another party and may change the allowance without a gas transaction from your wallet at signing time. If you signed an unexpected permit, inspect the token’s allowance and recent activity immediately, then revoke through a trusted interface if the permission is active.

What revoking can and cannot fix
What it fixes
A confirmed zero allowance prevents the named spender from using that specific ERC-20 permission to call transferFrom. It does not affect unrelated spenders, other token contracts, or approvals on other chains. Review every relevant row if you interacted with several applications.
What it does not fix
- It cannot reverse a transfer that already succeeded.
- It does not recover a compromised private key or seed phrase.
- It does not cancel a different approval granted to another spender.
- It does not remove permissions from a bridged representation on another network.
- It does not guarantee that a malicious site is safe to revisit.
If assets have already moved, preserve transaction hashes, stop signing further requests and contact the relevant protocol through its official support channel. Move remaining assets to a secure wallet only after checking that doing so will not expose the new wallet to the same compromised signing environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gas, ownership and failed revocations
Revoking is normally a state-changing transaction, so the owner wallet needs the network’s native gas token even when the allowance concerns stETH or wstETH. Gas prices vary; the allowance tool or wallet will display an estimate before signing. A token balance cannot normally pay that fee.
If a revoke fails or the allowance does not change, check these branches:
Recommended Free Tools
- Wrong account: reconnect the address that originally granted the approval.
- Wrong chain: switch both the wallet and the explorer or allowance tool to the network containing the approval.
- Pending transaction: wait for confirmation before submitting another transaction with the same nonce.
- Insufficient gas: add a small amount of the network’s native asset and retry after the failed transaction is resolved.
- Indexer delay: verify the confirmed transaction and the allowance directly in the chain’s explorer before assuming the revoke failed.
- Permit-only concern: inspect the allowance after a suspicious signature; a permit may require an on-chain revoke even though the original approval had no visible
approvecall.
A repeatable maintenance routine
Regular checks reduce the time an abandoned approval remains exposed without turning every wallet session into a manual audit.

- Review stETH and wstETH separately on each network where you hold them.
- Sort by recent activity when investigating an unexpected signature or transaction.
- Keep approvals only for protocols and positions you still use.
- Prefer exact or capped amounts when the application supports them and the extra approval prompts are acceptable.
- After closing a position or abandoning a dapp, revoke the associated spender and confirm the row shows zero.
- Record the transaction hash and date for any suspicious approval or revocation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only the wallet connection list: connected sites and token allowances are different records.
- Searching by symbol alone: verify the contract address and chain, especially for bridged assets.
- Reviewing stETH but not wstETH: each contract maintains its own allowance mapping.
- Signing a “revoke” prompt blindly: confirm the transaction changes an allowance rather than sending tokens or granting a new spender.
- Assuming a permit is harmless because there is no gas: a typed-data signature can still change an allowance.
- Moving tokens before checking approvals: an active unlimited allowance can put the new balance at risk if the spender remains authorized; revoke first when practical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to revoke both stETH and wstETH approvals?
Yes, when both rows exist. They are separate ERC-20 contracts with separate allowance records, so revoking one does not change the other.
Can I revoke an approval from a different wallet?
No. The wallet that owns the approval must authorize the state-changing revoke transaction; knowing the address or private-free public key is not sufficient.
Does a zero allowance recover tokens already taken?
No. Zero prevents future use of that allowance, but completed transfers require separate incident-response and recovery efforts.
Why is a wstETH address different on another network?
Bridged and multichain deployments can use different contracts and behavior. Select the network first and verify the token address published for that deployment instead of reusing the Ethereum-mainnet address.
Can a permit be revoked if I never sent an approve transaction?
Yes. If the permit created an active allowance, submit a normal allowance-changing transaction through a trusted interface using the owner wallet and sufficient native gas.
