To check iPhone 17 Pro Max storage, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. How do I check iPhone 17 Pro Max storage?
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then iPhone Storage.
- Check the available-space figure at the top of the screen. Review any recommendations and scroll through the app list to see reported storage use.
- Tap an app to inspect its storage details before choosing an action.
This is Apple’s general iPhone storage route, not a special menu documented only for iPhone 17 Pro Max. Menu organization can vary with iOS version. App details may not account for cached or temporary data in exactly the same way as the overall storage view. How to read the storage breakdown
The list helps identify where to look, but a category is not necessarily something you can remove directly. Apple’s storage categories can include:
- Apps and their documents or other content.
- Photos and videos, plus music, video, podcasts, ringtones, and voice memos.
- Mail and attachments, Books and PDFs, and Messages and attachments.
- Items downloaded locally from iCloud Drive.
- System-related categories and “Other.”
Apple says “Other” can include non-removable mobile assets, logs and caches, the Spotlight index, and system data. System storage varies by device and model. Cached files are managed by iOS and may be removed when space is needed, so there is generally no need to install a cache-cleaner app. Recommendations appear only when applicable to the device’s contents.

Offload or delete an app?

Tap the app in iPhone Storage to review the available options. If the documents or data matter, do not choose Delete App unless you have confirmed they are backed up or otherwise safe to lose. Apple describes the distinction in its iPhone and iPad storage instructions.
How to free up space on your iPhone
Start with items you recognize and no longer need. Review personal content before deleting it; removing a download or attachment may be irreversible if you have no other copy.

- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
- Remove downloaded media you have finished with. Check downloaded videos, music, podcasts, and other offline media in the app that stored them.
- Inspect Files. Review files and locally downloaded iCloud Drive items, and remove only items you do not need on the iPhone. A cloud-synced file may still exist in iCloud, but check its status and keep a separate copy if it must be preserved.
- Review message attachments. Use the Messages storage details to find large attachments, then delete only those you no longer want.
- Review photos and videos. Confirm you have another copy before deleting anything important, especially if iCloud Photos is enabled.
- Offload or delete apps selectively. Use the comparison above and inspect each app’s details before deciding.
Apple’s storage guidance also identifies media, files, messages, and apps as cleanup areas. Content synced to the iPhone from a computer may need to be deselected and synced from that computer rather than removed on the phone.

iPhone Storage is the capacity on the device. iCloud storage is separate cloud-account capacity, managed in your Apple Account’s iCloud settings. Buying or freeing iCloud storage does not increase the iPhone’s physical capacity. If the issue is local device space, first identify what occupies it in iPhone Storage rather than treating an iCloud plan as the fix.

Be especially careful with iCloud Photos: deleting a photo or video on one device also deletes it from other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Save a separate copy before deleting an item you need to keep. Check storage from a computer
If you prefer a computer view, Apple says you can connect the iPhone and inspect a storage bar divided by content type. Use Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on a PC, or iTunes in applicable older setups. See Apple’s computer storage instructions for the connection steps. This is an alternate view of device storage; synced content may need to be removed by changing the computer’s sync selection and syncing again.
