To check whether a password has appeared in known breach data, use Have I Been Pwned’s Pwned Passwords for a single password, or run a check on credentials already saved in Google Password Manager. If a check finds a match, change that password anywhere you used it and replace reused credentials with unique ones. A result with no match cannot prove that a password has never been exposed.
Check one password with Have I Been Pwned
- Open the Pwned Passwords page.
- Enter the password you want to check and submit it.
- Review the result to see whether it appears in the service’s known breach data.
HIBP describes Pwned Passwords as a free, open-source service. Its privacy design is specific to this check: the password is hashed in your browser, only the first five characters of the SHA-1 hash are sent to the service, and your browser compares the returned hash suffixes. HIBP says this means neither the full password nor its complete hash is sent to the service.
This approach is called k-anonymity. It reduces what the service receives, but it is not a reason to enter passwords into arbitrary third-party checking sites. Use the service’s own page and read the privacy explanation for any other tool you consider.
Check passwords saved in Google Password Manager
- Open Google Password Manager or go to the Password Manager in your Google Account.
- Open the Password Checkup section and start the check.
- Review any credentials flagged as exposed, weak, or reused, then follow the available account-change links or update those passwords with the relevant services.
Google Password Checkup checks saved passwords rather than a single password you type into a standalone lookup. Google says Chrome’s saved-credential check encrypts credentials on the device and sends an obscured copy to compare against an encrypted list; Google says it does not learn the credentials during that process. This is Google’s stated design, not a guarantee about how other checking services work.

What a match or no match means
- A match: the password appears in the data checked by that service. Do not keep using it, even if the account where it was originally used is not the one you are currently checking.
- No match: the password was not found in that service’s indexed data at the time of the check. It could still have been exposed in data the service does not have, and the result does not tell you whether the password is strong or unique.
- A warning about weakness or reuse: in Google Password Checkup, this is a separate concern from appearing in breach data. A password can need changing even without a breach match.
The two services do not offer a like-for-like coverage comparison: one checks a password you submit, while the other reviews saved credentials and can also flag weakness and reuse. Neither result certifies that an account is secure.

What to do if a password was exposed
- Change it at every account where you used it. Start with important accounts such as email, financial services, and accounts that can reset other passwords.
- Use a different password for each account. If one service is breached, a unique password helps prevent the same credential from opening other accounts.
- Generate and store unique passwords with a password manager if remembering them would otherwise lead you to reuse passwords. HIBP recommends password managers for this purpose.
