To check storage on a Windows PC, open Settings > System > Storage; to check an Xbox’s available room, open its storage-management view. These show device or drive usage—not necessarily the exact size of one installed game, and not a guaranteed install requirement for a game you have not downloaded.
First, identify which storage number you need
“How much storage does this game use?” can mean different things. A drive’s capacity is its total space; free space is what remains available; an installed game’s footprint is the space its files currently occupy. A game’s download size or required space during installation may differ from its installed footprint. Check the measurement that matches your question.
How to check storage on a Windows PC
See overall and category usage
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Review the categories, which can include Installed apps, Temporary files, and System & reserved. For Microsoft’s overview of these settings, see Storage settings in Windows.
Check another drive
- In Storage settings, open Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives.
- Select the drive you want to inspect and review its usage breakdown.
Windows also provides disk type, capacity, and current-use information under Disks & volumes. Storage settings can help identify where new apps and other content are saved, which matters if a game is installed somewhere other than C:.
Find installed apps in Windows 11
Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps to locate installed programs. Microsoft documents this route for Windows 11 in its guide to checking whether an app or program is installed. The list is useful for finding a game, but it does not guarantee an exact game-folder size for every launcher or installation type.

Find the footprint of a specific installed game
Look in the game launcher’s manage or install view if it provides a size, or use Windows’ drive-usage information to see where storage is being used. There is no single launcher-independent procedure established here that reports an exact size for every PC game.
If you need to make room, Windows Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations provide guided cleanup options. Avoid deleting unfamiliar system files manually.

How to see how much storage is left on Xbox
An Xbox Insider release note from August 31, 2022, documented this route for viewing capacity and current free space by storage device: My games & apps > Manage > Storage devices. The route is from a preview build, so menu names or placement may differ on your console. Use the equivalent Storage or Manage controls shown by your current system software. The original note is in Xbox Insider Release Notes – Alpha (2209.220829-2200).
This view tells you how much room is available on a device; it does not, by itself, tell you the installed size of a particular game. The same preview note refers to selecting a game and opening Manage game and add-ons for game management.

Can you tell whether an uninstalled Xbox game will fit?
The cited Microsoft and Xbox guidance establishes how to check storage capacity and free space, but it does not establish a universal, current Xbox Store method for seeing the exact future install requirement of any uninstalled game. Do not treat available free space as the game’s size. Microsoft’s Microsoft Store guidance explains how to find games in your library, rather than providing a reliable prospective-size lookup.
