To check a Nintendo Switch 2 game’s size before you buy it, open the title’s Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store software page and read Required Storage Space. For a boxed release, look for the required-storage figure on the front of the package. Then compare that number with the free space shown at HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management.

That check matters for digital downloads and for game-key cards, because a game-key card contains a launch key rather than the complete game. You need an internet connection and enough free space in the console’s internal storage or a compatible microSD Express card.

The fastest way to check a game’s storage requirement

  1. Find the exact game, edition and region you intend to buy in the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store.
  2. Open the software page and locate Required Storage Space. This is the amount Nintendo lists for downloading the digital version.
  3. If you are buying a physical release, read the required-storage figure printed on the front of the package. Nintendo also directs physical-software buyers to the title’s official software page.
  4. On the console, open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management and note the free space shown for internal storage and for any inserted microSD Express card.
  5. Make sure the available free space meets or exceeds the published requirement before purchasing or starting the download.

Storage requirements vary by game. Patches and downloadable content can add data later, so the figure is a purchase-time check rather than a permanent prediction of the title’s total footprint.

Checking a digital game in Nintendo eShop

Open the title’s own software page

Use the Nintendo eShop on your Switch 2, or the Nintendo Store listing for the same title, and open the page for the exact game you plan to purchase. Different editions, bundles and add-on packages can have different requirements. Do not rely on a generic number for a franchise or on the size of another edition.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Read “Required Storage Space”

Scroll through the software information until you see Required Storage Space. Nintendo says the eShop page shows the amount of free space needed for the digital version. Treat the value as the minimum free space needed to download the listed software at that point in time.

Record the number before checkout

Write down the displayed figure or keep the page open while you check the console. This avoids confusing the game’s requirement with the price, a trial version, an expansion, or a separate downloadable item. If the page changes after a publisher update, use the current value displayed for the listing you are actually buying.

Why the listing is more reliable than an old article

Publishers can add patches, language packs or other data after launch. Nintendo’s guidance is to verify that you have the required storage space before making a purchase. A forum post or launch-day review may therefore understate what the current download needs.

Checking a boxed physical release

Read the front of the package

For a physical Switch 2 release, check the front of the game packaging for the required-storage figure. The number is intended to tell you how much additional data must be downloaded or installed for that release. Nintendo’s physical-software guidance also points buyers to the official software page, so use both sources when they are available.

Match the package to the edition you will buy

Collectors’ editions, deluxe editions, regional versions and bundles can identify different software. Confirm that the package, product page and version you selected all refer to the same title. If the package does not show a figure clearly, open the corresponding Nintendo software page rather than guessing from another format.

Do not assume “physical” means no storage

A cartridge does not automatically mean that the console needs no storage. Some physical releases require additional data, and game-key-card releases require a download of the game data. The package’s storage statement is the useful answer for that specific product.

See how much space your Switch 2 actually has

Open Data Management

From the HOME Menu, select System Settings, then Data Management. Nintendo identifies this screen as the place to see available free space. It reports internal system storage and, when one is inserted and recognized, the free space on the microSD Express card.

Use free space, not advertised capacity

Compare the game with the free number, not with the capacity printed on the console or card. The Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, but usable space is lower because some storage is reserved by the system. Existing games, captures and other content also reduce what remains for a new download.

Check both storage locations

If a microSD Express card is installed, Data Management can show free space in both locations. A download can fit in the combined storage only if the system can use the available location for that software. Before starting, verify that the location the console will use has enough free space rather than assuming that unused space elsewhere will automatically solve the problem.

How to compare the requirement with your free space

Purchase type Where to find the requirement What to compare Important qualification
Digital download Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store software page, under Required Storage Space Published requirement versus free space in Data Management The listing can change as software is updated; later patches or DLC may need more space.
Physical release Required-storage figure on the package front and the official software page Package figure versus the free space available for installation or additional data Do not infer the requirement from the cartridge format alone.
Game-key card Game-key-card packaging and the Nintendo eShop page Download requirement versus free internal or microSD Express space The card carries a launch key, not the complete game data; internet access is required.

Use a simple pass/fail test: if the free-space value is equal to or greater than the title’s published requirement, the listed download should fit at that moment. If it is smaller, free space first. Leave additional headroom when you expect updates or DLC, because the published base requirement does not guarantee that future content will fit without further cleanup.

Game-key cards: what must be downloaded

A key card is not a complete copy of the game

Nintendo describes a game-key card as containing the launch key rather than the complete game. To download the game, you need an internet connection and enough free space in the Nintendo Switch 2 system memory or on a microSD Express card. The required amount is printed on the game-key-card packaging and is also available on the Nintendo eShop page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the requirement before opening the card

Use the same Data Management check as for a digital purchase. A game-key card can look like a conventional cartridge, but its storage consequence is closer to a download: the console must retrieve the game data before you can play the title.

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Keep the card inserted to play

After the download completes, the game-key card must remain inserted to launch the title. It is not a license that lets you remove the card permanently. If the card is absent, the console cannot use the key needed to start that game.

What happens if the download is interrupted

An interrupted download does not change the requirement. Reconnect the console to the internet, confirm that enough free space remains, and resume the download from the system’s software or download controls. If space became tight because another item was installed meanwhile, return to Data Management and remove unused content before retrying.

Switch 2 storage limits and compatible expansion

Internal storage

Nintendo Switch 2 provides 256 GB of internal storage. The amount available for games is lower because the operating system reserves part of that capacity. Data Management shows the usable free space for your particular console, which is the figure that should drive a purchase decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

microSD Express support

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards with capacities up to 2 TB. A first-use system update over the internet is required for a microSD Express card. Install and initialize the card according to Nintendo’s on-screen instructions, then check Data Management again to confirm that the console recognizes it and reports its free space.

Do not buy a legacy expansion card for game storage

Nintendo Switch 2 does not use the older, non-Express expansion-card standard for game storage. A legacy microSD or microSDXC card that worked in an earlier Switch model is not an appropriate substitute for a compatible microSD Express card. Confirm the Express designation before buying.

How to evaluate a card

When comparing compatible cards, consider more than the advertised capacity:

What to do when a game will not fit

1. Confirm the shortfall

Return to System Settings → Data Management and compare the free-space figure with the game’s current Required Storage Space value. Check both internal storage and the recognized microSD Express card so you know whether the problem is a full location or a card that has not been detected.

2. Remove software or content you no longer use

Use the management options on that screen to delete unused software or other stored content. Remove only items you can reinstall or replace from your account or physical media, and verify the selected title before confirming. After deletion, reopen the free-space view so the console refreshes the available amount.

3. Add a compatible microSD Express card

If you want to keep the existing library installed, use a compatible microSD Express card rather than a legacy card. The card may require the console’s first-use system update over the internet. Once the card is recognized, check its free-space value before restarting the game download.

4. Recheck after updates

If the download begins but later reports insufficient space, the software may have received additional data or you may have installed another item in the meantime. Read the current eShop requirement again, inspect Data Management, and make room for the revised total.

Updates, DLC and changing requirements

The Required Storage Space figure describes the software listing when you check it; it is not a promise that the installed title will never grow. Publishers can release updates, and optional DLC adds its own data. A base game that fits today may need cleanup later if you install several expansions.

Before a major update or DLC purchase, check the available space again. If the store presents a separate requirement for an add-on, treat it as additional storage rather than replacing the base game’s requirement. Keeping a reasonable buffer also reduces the chance that a routine patch will fail because every gigabyte is already occupied.

A practical buying workflow

  1. Identify the exact product. Note the game name, edition and whether it is digital, a standard physical release or a game-key card.
  2. Read the authoritative figure. Use Required Storage Space on the eShop or Nintendo Store page; for a box, read the front-panel storage statement as well.
  3. Check the console. Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management and record free internal and microSD Express space.
  4. Allow for future data. Expect updates and DLC to require additional room beyond the base listing.
  5. Choose an action. Buy and download if the requirement fits, delete unused content, or add a compatible microSD Express card.
  6. For a key card, plan for internet access. Complete the download before expecting to play, and keep the card inserted afterward.

Troubleshooting common storage surprises

The package and eShop show different numbers

First confirm that both refer to the same edition and release. If one figure is older, use the current software listing for the download decision and keep the package figure as a reference for the physical product. Requirements can change as publishers revise software.

The console shows less space than the card’s label

Card labels describe capacity, while Data Management reports free usable space after system formatting and any stored data. Use the console’s reported free figure for comparisons.

The card is not listed in Data Management

Confirm that it is a microSD Express card, not an older non-Express model. A first-use system update over the internet is required for a microSD Express card, so complete the prompted update and check the menu again.

A key-card game asks for a download

That behavior is expected. The key card does not contain the complete game data. Connect to the internet, provide the listed free space in internal storage or on the microSD Express card, and leave the card inserted when launching the finished installation.

The game fit initially but an update fails

Open Data Management to see what space remains, then check the title’s current eShop page. Delete unused software or other content, or expand with a compatible microSD Express card, before retrying the update.

Final checks before you purchase

  • Have you opened the current listing for the exact game and edition?
  • Did you read the value labeled Required Storage Space?
  • For a box, did you inspect the package front for the required-storage figure?
  • Does Data Management show at least that much free space in usable internal or microSD Express storage?
  • Have you allowed room for likely updates or DLC?
  • If it is a game-key card, do you have internet access for the download and a plan to keep the card inserted?
  • If you need expansion, is the card microSD Express and within Nintendo’s supported capacity of up to 2 TB?

These checks answer whether a Switch 2 game fits before money is spent or a download begins. Recheck the listing whenever you buy a new title or add-on, because storage requirements are specific to each game and can change over time.
