Use the Government of Greenland’s Greenland Mineral Resources Portal as your primary source. Search by company, project, licence code, licence category, or map location, then open the individual record and note its holder, status, minerals, dates, area, and location. For a reliable project-status assessment, combine that legal record with environmental documents, consultation notices, government decisions, and recent operator or regulator updates.

Do not treat an exploitation licence as proof that a mine is built or producing. Greenland’s records cover several different authorization types, and official dashboards can show different totals depending on category, filters, and synchronization date.

What the Greenland Mineral Resources Portal shows

The Greenland Mineral Resources Portal is the online interface for the Mineral Licence and Safety Authority’s licence-management system. It is designed to let users “view licences on an interactive map, identify available areas, follow the status of licences and applications and submit applications and reports through a secure login.” Public visitors can search records and map layers; authenticated users also have application and statutory-reporting functions.

The portal can contain more than operating-mine permits. Depending on the category and filter you select, records may relate to:

  • industrial minerals;
  • exploration, prospecting, and exploitation;
  • hydrocarbons;
  • scientific permits;
  • small-scale licences; and
  • field-activity approvals.

Start by choosing the category that matches your question. A scientific permit or field-activity approval is not evidence of mineral exploration rights, and an exploration licence is not an exploitation authorization.

Step-by-step: check a Greenland licence or permit

  1. Open the official portal. Go to portal.govmin.gl and use the search or map interface. Search by the company’s legal name, project name, licence code, licence family, or geographic location.
  2. Select the relevant licence family. Narrow the result to exploration, prospecting, exploitation, hydrocarbons, scientific, small-scale, industrial minerals, or field activity. This prevents unrelated records from being mistaken for a mining permit.
  3. Open the individual record. The record is the item you should cite, not just a map marker or dashboard count. Confirm the licence code and copy it exactly for later searches.
  4. Capture the legal fields. Record the owner, licence type, minerals, licence date, expiry date, renewal date if displayed, transfer date if displayed, area, sub-location, region, and current status.
  5. Check the map placement. Compare the mapped polygon or point with the project’s stated site, nearby licences, available areas, and any protected-area or access constraint visible in the portal.
  6. Look for status history and amendments. A renewal, transfer, enlargement, surrender, or other amendment can change the practical meaning of an older announcement. Use the latest dated entry and retain earlier dates when they explain the project history.
  7. Cross-check project maturity. An active legal record establishes the authorization shown in that record. It does not establish construction completion, environmental approval, financing, commercial production, or current mine operations. Verify those points in regulatory and company documents.

Decide which record answers your question

The right record depends on what you are trying to establish. To identify who controls mineral rights, use the licence record’s owner and licence code. To find out whether a company may still be exploring, check the exploration or prospecting category and read the status and expiry fields. To test a claim that a mine is permitted, look for an exploitation record, then check environmental and other approvals separately. To determine whether an area is open for a new application, use the portal’s available-area view rather than assuming that an empty map location is unlicensed.

Project names can be abbreviated, translated, or reused in company materials. Search several spellings and then resolve the result through the legal holder, code, commodity, and mapped area. A project promoter can change while the licence record continues under a different legal entity, so the promoter’s website is not a substitute for the Authority’s record.

How to read an individual licence record

Field What it tells you How to use it
Licence code The unique identifier assigned to the authorization. Quote this code in notes and use it for repeat searches so similarly named projects are not confused.
Licence type Whether the record is exploration, prospecting, exploitation, scientific, small-scale, hydrocarbon, or another authorization. Use the type to determine what activities are legally covered; do not infer mining or production rights from a different category.
Status The portal’s current label, which may indicate active, surrendered, pending, or another state. Read status together with issue, expiry, renewal, transfer, and amendment dates.
Owner The legal holder shown in the record. Keep the licence holder separate from a parent company, investor, project promoter, or marketing name.
Minerals The commodities covered by that authorization. Do not assume the holder has rights to minerals that are not listed.
Licence and expiry dates The published term of the authorization. Check whether a renewal, extension, transfer, or amendment changes the original term.
Area and location The licensed polygon, sub-location, region, and mapped position. Use both the map and text fields to distinguish nearby projects and identify possible overlap or protected-area issues.

The Authority’s FAQ confirms that the portal can show who owns a licence, which minerals it covers, and its location on a map. A screenshot without the licence code and date is difficult to audit, so save the record details in your working notes.

Published exploitation licences: a useful cross-check

The Authority’s exploitation-licence page publishes a table of company, project, and licence number. The page currently lists ten active exploitation licences. The following entries are explicitly identified in that table:

Company Project Licence
Nalunaq A/S Nalunaq 2003-05
London Mining Greenland A/S Isua 2013-31
Greenland Ruby A/S Aappaluttoq 2014-21
Ironbark A/S Citronen Fjord 2016-30
Tanbreez Mining Greenland A/S Killavaat Alannguat 2020-54
Dundas Titanium A/S Steensby Land 2021-08
Greenland Graphite A/S Piiaaffik Amitsoq 2026-03

Use this published table as a second check after finding a record in the portal. If a company announcement uses a shortened project name or a parent-company name, match it against the legal holder and licence number rather than relying on wording alone. The table is a category-specific register; it is not a complete list of every Greenland authorization.

Pending applications and what each status means

Applications follow a published sequence. The official FAQ states: “The application starts in the ‘Registration’ status, then goes to ‘Validation’, ‘Approval’ and finally ‘License Pending’ before it is issued as an active license.” The stages should be read as process milestones, not as proof that a licence will be granted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Status Meaning in the published process What you can safely conclude
Registration The application has been entered and is awaiting authority review. An application exists; no active licence has been issued.
Validation The authority is checking location and overlap issues. The proposed area is under administrative and spatial review.
Approval The application is undergoing consultation. The proposal is in an approval process, not yet an active authorization.
License Pending The application has passed the preceding stages and is awaiting issuance. Do not call it an active licence until the portal shows issuance and an active status.

New exploration applications and applications to enlarge an existing area are subject to 21 calendar days of public consultation. Record the consultation start and end dates, the documents published, and any authority decision that follows. A consultation notice is evidence of a regulatory step, not evidence of eventual approval or mining.

When reporting an application, preserve the exact status label and the date you observed it. “Approval” is not the same as approved, and “License Pending” is not the same as issued. If the portal later changes the status, update your note rather than silently replacing the earlier observation.

Why an active exploitation licence does not prove an operating mine

An exploitation licence is a legal authorization category. It does not, by itself, show that a project has completed its environmental and social assessments, obtained every construction or land-use approval, secured financing, built infrastructure, commissioned a processing plant, or started commercial production.

For each project, check these separate evidence layers:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Legal authorization: licence type, code, holder, status, term, area, and mineral commodities in the portal.
  • Environmental and social review: assessment documents, conditions, approvals, monitoring requirements, and any later amendments.
  • Consultation and government decisions: public notices, hearing records, decisions, conditions, and appeals where published.
  • Physical development: credible evidence of access roads, port or power work, processing facilities, construction contracts, commissioning, or shipments.
  • Operating evidence: recent regulator filings, production or export statements, safety reports, and dated company updates.

Use a date on every item. A feasibility study or construction announcement can establish a project stage at that time, but it does not prove that the stage remains current.

Finding geological and exploration context

For geological background, use greenmin.gl, the Greenland Mineral Resources Portal’s geoscience repository developed with GEUS. It can provide maps and exploration-focused geological information that help explain why a licence was sought and how a project relates to regional geology.

Data availability can depend on licence status. Geological data associated with a licence may be released when the licence is relinquished, so an active project can have less public data than a surrendered or relinquished area. Treat an empty data result as a publication-status issue, not proof that no exploration occurred.

How to compare two Greenland projects consistently

Use the same fields for both projects. A side-by-side worksheet prevents a well-publicized project from appearing more advanced simply because it has more news coverage.

Comparison axis Questions to answer
Licence and legal status What licence type and code are shown? Is the record active, pending, surrendered, or another status?
Holder and corporate identity Who is the legal holder, and how does that entity relate to the project promoter or parent company?
Dates and history When was it issued? What are the expiry, renewal, transfer, enlargement, and amendment dates?
Commodity and area Which minerals are listed, and how large and precisely located is the licensed area?
Technical stage Is the project at early exploration, advanced study, construction, commissioning, or production?
Environmental and social status Which assessments and approvals are published, and what conditions apply?
Consultation and other approvals Have consultation notices, government decisions, and related permits been completed?
Location and infrastructure What access, power, port, logistics, climate, or protected-area constraints affect development?
Recency What is the newest dated government or company update supporting the claimed stage?

When a value is not published, write “not stated” and identify the page or document checked. Do not fill gaps with estimates or with the status of a nearby licence.

Why Greenland licence counts can conflict

Do not quote a single number of “Greenland mining licences” without defining the source, category, filters, and date. A dashboard snapshot on the Greenland Mineral Resources Portal displayed three active licences and zero applications in processing at a displayed synchronization date of 13 October 2026. The Authority’s exploitation page, meanwhile, listed ten active exploitation licences.

Those figures are not safely interchangeable. They may use different licence categories, dashboard scopes, filters, or synchronization states. The defensible method is to cite the individual record and state which official page and category produced the figure. If you use a count, write the date and scope in the same sentence, for example: “The exploitation-licence table listed ten active exploitation licences on the page viewed in 2026,” rather than presenting ten as the number of all Greenland permits.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling an application a licence

Words such as “registered,” “validated,” or “under approval” describe an application stage. Use “application” until the record is issued as an active licence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confusing a project name with the legal holder

Search both names and verify the legal holder in the record. Ownership can differ from a parent company, joint-venture participant, or promotional brand.

Assuming the mineral list is broader than it is

Quote only the commodities shown for that licence. A licence for one commodity does not automatically establish rights to every mineral in the area.

Ignoring dates

An old issue date may hide a renewal, transfer, enlargement, surrender, or expiry. Capture every date displayed and check the latest status.

Using a map pin as the whole answer

A map location helps identify an area but does not replace the legal record. Use the licence code, holder, type, status, and dates as your citation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating missing geological data as missing exploration

Release timing can depend on licence status. Check the repository’s coverage and the licence history before drawing conclusions.

A practical record for your due-diligence file

For each licence or project, keep one dated entry containing:

  • portal URL and access date;
  • licence code and licence type;
  • legal holder and any separately identified promoter;
  • minerals, area, sub-location, and region;
  • status, issue date, expiry date, renewal, transfer, and amendment information;
  • map screenshot or coordinates sufficient to identify the area;
  • application or consultation status, including the 21-day consultation window where applicable;
  • environmental, social, and government-decision documents;
  • the latest dated company or regulator statement supporting the claimed project stage; and
  • notes explaining any conflict between portal categories or dashboard totals.

This structure lets another reader reproduce your check and see exactly which facts are legal-record data, which are regulatory milestones, and which describe development progress.

Questions readers ask

Where can I see who holds a Greenland mining licence?

Search the official Greenland Mineral Resources Portal and open the individual licence record. The owner field identifies the legal holder. Confirm the licence code, type, minerals, location, and status before attributing the project to that company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether a Greenland exploration permit is still active?

Use the exploration or prospecting record, read its current status, and check the issue, expiry, renewal, transfer, and amendment fields. Do not rely on an old company announcement or a map marker alone.

Is a project with an exploitation licence already a mine?

No. The licence establishes the authorization shown in the record. Construction, environmental approvals, infrastructure, commissioning, shipments, and commercial production require separate, dated evidence.

What does “License Pending” mean?

It is the final published application stage before issuance as an active licence. It is not itself an active licence. Use that wording until the portal shows issuance and active status.

How long is public consultation for a new exploration application?

New exploration applications and applications to enlarge an existing area are subject to 21 calendar days of public consultation. Record the notice and dates, and check for the authority’s later decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does one official page show three licences while another shows ten?

The figures can cover different categories, filters, dashboard scopes, or synchronization states. The portal dashboard displayed three active licences and zero applications in processing at a displayed sync date of 13 October 2026, while the exploitation table listed ten active exploitation licences. Cite the category-specific page and date instead of presenting either figure as the total for all permits.

Bottom line

For Greenland mining due diligence, begin with the official portal record, not a headline count or company description. Confirm the licence category, code, holder, minerals, dates, area, and status; distinguish an application from an issued licence; then verify environmental approvals and physical project progress independently. The individual, dated record is more reliable than an uncaveated total, and an exploitation licence alone is not proof of an operating mine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I check the legal holder of a Greenland licence?

Use the Greenland Mineral Resources Portal, search for the project or licence code, and open the individual record. The owner field identifies the legal holder; verify it against the code, licence type, status, minerals, and map location.

Does an active exploitation licence mean the mine is producing?

No. It confirms the authorization category shown in the record, but not environmental completion, construction, financing, commissioning, shipments, or commercial production. Check dated regulatory and operator evidence for those stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Registration, Validation, Approval, and License Pending?

They are successive application stages. Registration records the application, Validation checks location and overlap, Approval involves consultation, and License Pending precedes issuance. None should be described as an active licence until issuance is shown.

How long is consultation for a new exploration application?

The published process provides 21 calendar days of public consultation for new exploration applications and applications to enlarge an existing area.

Why do official Greenland licence totals differ?

The portal dashboard and the exploitation-licence table can use different categories, filters, scopes, or synchronization states. Cite the individual record or state the exact page, category, and date behind any count.

The Bottom Line

Check the individual Greenland portal record first, then verify applications, environmental decisions, consultation, and physical progress separately. An exploitation licence is not proof of an operating mine.
