Use ffprobe to inspect a video stream’s codec, reported bitrate and frame-rate fields; use FFmpeg’s output statistics and YouTube Live Control Room to assess a running broadcast over time. No single metadata field proves the bitrate or playback frame rate actually reaching YouTube: compare the encoder’s settings and output with stream-health data and, when needed, packet or timestamp details.
Check a video stream with ffprobe
For a local file or a probeable input URL, run this command to print the first video stream’s codec, bitrate and two commonly reported frame-rate values:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of default=noprint_wrappers=1 INPUT
Replace INPUT with a file path or input URL. The command selects v:0, the first video stream, and limits output to the requested fields.
For output that scripts can parse, use JSON:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0
-show_entries stream=codec_name,bit_rate,r_frame_rate,avg_frame_rate
-of json INPUT
To inspect all streams instead, omit -select_streams v:0. That can matter because total live bitrate includes audio as well as video; the video stream’s bit_rate alone is not the total sent to YouTube. FFprobe also offers -show_packets for packet-level inspection and -show_frames for decoded-frame information. See the FFprobe documentation.

Understand the bitrate result
What bit_rate tells you
FFprobe may report a stream’s bit_rate, but it may be missing or unsuitable as a measurement of a changing live transmission. Treat it as stream metadata, not proof of the bitrate YouTube is receiving at every moment. A configured target is likewise not proof that the encoder output or delivered stream matches it.
Measure an encode over time
For an FFmpeg encode, enable its periodic progress reporting or use the documented -vstats output to review encoder statistics. In that reporting, br is bitrate and avg_br is average bitrate, in Kbits/s. These are encoder-reported values: a short interval of a variable stream need not equal the target. FFmpeg documents these options in its command-line documentation.

For a live YouTube broadcast, evaluate the encoder’s output or reporting alongside the stream-health information in YouTube Live Control Room. If you need packet-level detail, FFprobe’s packet inspection can help, but the exact way to observe a running endpoint depends on the input and output protocol, FFmpeg build and whether that endpoint can be probed. There is no single universal command for every RTMP or RTMPS live setup.
Interpret avg_frame_rate and r_frame_rate
When FFprobe reports two different frame rates, do not assume that r_frame_rate is the playback rate. FFmpeg defines avg_frame_rate as the average framerate. It describes r_frame_rate as a guessed base rate—the lowest rate at which timestamps can be represented accurately—and cautions that the value is only a guess. It can be higher than the intended display rate because of how timestamps are represented. See the FFmpeg 8.1 AVStream reference.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Compare both fields with the encoder’s configured frame rate and, if the values remain ambiguous, inspect frame timestamps. For constant-frame-rate encoding, FFmpeg’s documentation describes a time base of 1 / frame_rate and identical timestamp increments of 1. Metadata alone may not settle what a particular encode represents; timestamp or frame inspection is the better check when the fields disagree.
Compare the encode with YouTube Live ingest guidance
YouTube’s English-language live encoder guidance, checked on 2026-10-03, covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR encoding, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that must not exceed 4 seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. The live-ingest examples below are not upload-video recommendations.

| 1080p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s live encoder recommendations as checked on 2026-10-03; platform guidance can change. Recheck YouTube’s live encoder settings before a broadcast. Do not substitute the separate recommended upload encoding settings: those describe uploaded videos, not live ingest.
When comparing your setup with the table, match the exact codec, ingest resolution and frame rate. A different row is not a like-for-like target, and meeting a recommended setting does not establish that the encoder achieved it or YouTube received it.

Preflight the stream and troubleshoot discrepancies
Before going live
- Check the encoded output’s codec, resolution, target bitrate and frame rate rather than relying only on source-file metadata.
- Confirm the keyframe interval against YouTube’s current live guidance.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages in Live Control Room.
- Allow upload headroom. YouTube’s network tips recommend leaving 20% room; its guidance says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and discusses capacity for primary and backup streams plus that headroom where applicable. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
If the bitrate seems wrong
bit_rateis absent: this field is not available or meaningful for every live input. Check encoder reporting and YouTube’s stream-health data instead.- The reported bitrate changes: distinguish target bitrate from observed output, and examine statistics over a meaningful interval. A brief variable-rate interval need not equal the configured target.
- Video bitrate looks right but the total does not: inspect all streams and account for audio; video-only bitrate is not total live bitrate.
- The encoder target matches the guide but YouTube reports a problem: verify the actual output and receiver-side stream health. A recommendation is not evidence of successful delivery, and available network bandwidth must cover the total stream.
If the frame-rate fields disagree
r_frame_rateis higher than expected: do not treat it alone as the intended playback rate. Compareavg_frame_rate, the configured encode rate and actual timestamps.- The fields still do not explain playback: inspect frames or timestamps; timestamp representation can make the guessed base rate differ from the intended display rate.
Or let it run in the cloud
