On a PS5, Marvel Rivals’ age restriction is changed in the child’s PlayStation family settings, not in a Marvel Rivals game menu. Sign in with the adult family-manager account, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, select the child, open Parental Controls, adjust the restriction level or Age Level for PS5 Games, and choose Confirm.
The age shown for Marvel Rivals depends on the country and storefront. An Xbox/Microsoft Store listing viewed in a European market displayed PEGI 16, but that is not a universal rating. Check the icon and age on your child’s own store page before choosing a setting. Because Marvel Rivals includes text and voice communication, review communication, user-generated-content, spending and play-time controls separately from the game-age setting.
What controls Marvel Rivals access?
For a child account, the platform’s family-management system is the primary gatekeeper. On PlayStation 5, the restriction level and the age level for PS5 games determine whether a child can launch or obtain a game. Marvel Rivals does not provide a separate in-game switch that overrides those account controls.
The adult family manager must make the change. A child account cannot raise its own restriction level, and changing a setting on an adult account does not necessarily change the child’s profile. Make sure you are signed in to the family-manager account and editing the correct child user.

Marvel Rivals is available through connections for Steam, Epic, Xbox and PlayStation, with versions listed for Windows, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. The verified menu-by-menu procedure below is for PS5. Xbox, Steam and Epic use their own family or operating-system controls, so the labels and paths can differ by platform and country.
Check the rating before changing a restriction
Why the age number can differ
Ratings are assigned by regional systems and displayed by individual storefronts. The Xbox European listing examined for this guide showed PEGI 16 for Marvel Rivals. PEGI is used in participating European markets; it is not the same system as the ESRB used in the United States and Canada, and a rating can vary by territory, edition or storefront.
Open the game’s page on the child’s actual console or store account and read the rating icon and age shown there. Do not use the PEGI 16 figure as a worldwide rule. If the store page shows a different local rating, use that information when deciding which family setting is appropriate.

A game-age control compares the game’s assigned rating with the child account’s permitted age level. Raising the permitted level may allow the child to start or download the game, but it does not automatically enable voice chat, text chat, purchases or unrestricted play time. Those are separate control areas.
Change the restriction on a PS5 console
Use this procedure when the child plays Marvel Rivals on a PlayStation 5.
- Sign in as the adult family manager. Use the account that manages the family group, not the child’s profile.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Family and Parental Controls.
- Choose Family Management. If prompted, authenticate with the family-manager account.
- Select the child user whose access you want to change.
- Open Parental Controls. The current restriction level appears at the top of this screen.
- Select the displayed restriction level. Choose one of the presets: Child, Early Teens, Late Teens, Older or No Restriction.
- If you want a narrower change, choose the option to customize individual controls instead of changing every category at once.
- For Marvel Rivals specifically, edit Age Level for PS5 Games and select the age level that matches your family decision and the rating shown on your local store page.
- Select Confirm to save the setting.
After saving, have the child sign in again or restart the console if the game still appears blocked. Store and game permissions can take a short time to refresh. If the restriction remains, verify that you edited the same child account used to launch Marvel Rivals and that the account is in the expected family group.
Change the restriction in the PlayStation Family app
The PlayStation Family app provides the equivalent controls from a phone or tablet.

- Open the PlayStation Family app and select the child from the home screen.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Choose Restriction Level.
- Select an appropriate preset, or edit Age Level for PS5 Games for a game-specific age decision.
- Save the change when prompted, then check the child’s PS5 account again.
How the app handles the child’s date of birth
In the app, selecting Age of This Account bases the game-age level on the child account’s recorded date of birth. That age level updates annually as the child gets older. Editing Age Level for PS5 Games instead changes the preset to Customize, allowing the family manager to set a level that is not simply the automatic age calculation.
Use the automatic account-age option when you want the platform to follow the account’s birth date over time. Use customization when your family rules require a different threshold for games.
Choose between a preset and custom controls
Preset restriction levels
A preset changes a group of age-related controls together. The available labels documented for PS5 are Child, Early Teens, Late Teens, Older and No Restriction. The exact games permitted by each preset depend on the platform’s rating data and the child account’s region.

A preset is useful when you want a simple, consistent rule across the child’s games. It is less precise when you want to allow one game while keeping stricter communication, purchase or time limits.
Custom settings
Customization lets you treat game age, communication, spending and play time as separate decisions. For example, a family could permit a game at the local rating while keeping voice communication disabled and requiring approval for purchases. The PS5 guide documents these control areas separately, so changing the game-age level does not require removing every other safeguard.
Review communication and online-safety settings
Marvel Rivals includes both text and voice communication. Its moderation guidelines dated October 10, 2026 describe automated voice detection, real-time text monitoring, player reports and manual review. That means a child who is allowed to play may still encounter other players’ messages or speech unless communication controls are configured separately.
Where to look on PlayStation
In the child’s PS5 parental controls, review the setting labelled Communicating and User-Generated Content, or the equivalent wording shown for your account and region. Check whether the child can communicate with other players, view or share user-generated content, and use voice or text features. The exact choices can depend on the platform account and local settings.
Do not assume that allowing Marvel Rivals also means allowing open chat. Decide independently whether the child may use voice chat, text chat, parties or other user-generated content. If you change communication permissions, save them in the family controls and test with the child’s account rather than the adult account.

The game’s moderation guidance says prohibited speech can be reported with the in-game reporting tool during a match or immediately afterward. Automated systems are intended to identify prohibited text and voice communications without relying only on player reports. Enforcement can include warnings, mutes, matchmaking restrictions and long-term account suspension.
Explain to the child how to report a player, leave a conversation and block or mute someone when those options are available. Platform controls reduce exposure, but they do not replace supervision or the game’s reporting process.
Set spending and play-time limits separately
The PS5 family guide treats spending and play time as distinct from the age threshold. Review these controls even after Marvel Rivals becomes playable.

Confirm the account you changed
Return to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management and confirm that the selected child is the account used to start Marvel Rivals. Families sometimes change the setting for one child while the game is installed or launched under another profile.

Check the game-age value, not only the general preset
Open Parental Controls and inspect Age Level for PS5 Games. A general restriction level can remain stricter than the individual setting you intended, or a custom configuration may not have been confirmed. Select the desired age level again and choose Confirm.
Verify the local store rating
Look at the rating shown on the child’s own PlayStation store page. If that rating is higher than the permitted age level, the block is expected. Do not rely on the PEGI 16 label from a European Xbox listing when your account is registered in another rating region.
Check communication separately
If the game launches but chat is unavailable, that is normally a communication-control issue rather than an age-rating failure. Review Communicating and User-Generated Content and the child’s in-game audio and text settings. Game access and chat access are separate decisions.

After saving a change in the console or app, sign out of the child account and sign back in. Restart the PS5 if necessary. A pending family-setting change may not be visible to an already-running game or store session.
Check for a pending approval
If the family setup requires an adult approval for a download or purchase, look for a request in the family manager’s notifications. An age-level change can permit the title while a separate purchase or download approval still prevents installation.
Check which edition or storefront is being used
Confirm that the child is opening the same Marvel Rivals listing whose rating you reviewed. A console version, a cloud listing or a different regional store can show different rating information. Use the account and storefront where the child actually plays.
What to do on Xbox, Windows, Steam or Epic
The available material does not establish a complete, current menu path for Xbox, Steam or Epic. Those platforms use their own family-management systems, and labels can change by device, operating system and country.
