For an XRP Ledger escrow, open the account in XRPL Explorer, XRPL Scan, or XRP Toolkit and inspect the escrow’s FinishAfter, CancelAfter, amount, destination, and any Condition. A time-only escrow becomes finishable at the first validated ledger close at or after FinishAfter—normally within about five seconds of that protocol time—but the XRP is not spendable until an eligible party submits and validates an EscrowFinish transaction. An exchange withdrawal hold is different: its release date comes from the exchange’s policy, not from an on-ledger escrow timestamp.
What an XRP “lockup” can mean
The word lockup is used for several different situations, and the way you check it depends on where the XRP is held.
Self-custody XRP Ledger escrow
An XRPL account can contain an on-ledger Escrow object. The object records an amount, a destination account, timing rules, and possibly a cryptographic condition. Because it is public ledger data, anyone can inspect it with an explorer. The escrow itself controls when the protocol will accept a finish or cancel transaction; it does not automatically move the XRP into a spendable balance when a clock reaches the required time.
Exchange withdrawal hold
An exchange may label a balance as locked, suspended, pending, or unavailable without creating an Escrow object in your personal XRPL account. The exchange controls the hold and its release schedule. Compliance reviews, a deposit-confirmation requirement, a security cooldown, maintenance, or a product-specific unlock can all use similar wording. Without the name of the exchange and the reason shown in its account interface, an exact withdrawal date cannot be calculated from XRPL fields.

Ripple’s corporate supply escrow
Ripple also uses the word escrow for company-held XRP released under a supply-management schedule. That corporate program is unrelated to an individual wallet’s escrow and does not determine when an exchange customer can withdraw.
Quick rule for estimating availability
For a time-only XRPL escrow, use this estimate:
earliest finishable time ≈ FinishAfter, rounded up to the first validated ledger close at or after that time
XRPL timing is based on ledger close rather than a perfectly continuous wall clock. The documented variation is approximately five seconds. If FinishAfter is 12:00:00 UTC, the escrow becomes eligible at the first validated ledger close at or after 12:00:00; seeing eligibility a few seconds later is normal.

Eligibility is not the same as receipt. An eligible party must submit an EscrowFinish transaction, sign it, pay the transaction fee, and wait for validation. Until that transaction succeeds, the XRP remains in the escrow object.
Step 1: Identify who controls the XRP
Use the XRPL workflow for a personal wallet
Use the ledger workflow when you control an XRPL account’s signing keys and the balance is represented by an on-ledger Escrow object. You can inspect the object publicly even when you use a hardware wallet, but only an authorized signer can finish or cancel it.
Use the platform’s support and account records for an exchange
First check the exchange’s withdrawal page, transaction history, status banner, and support notices. Record the exact wording of the hold and when it began. Do not infer a release time from a personal-account FinishAfter value unless the exchange explicitly identifies an XRPL escrow belonging to your withdrawal. Exchange addresses typically cannot be used to finish an escrow through a personal wallet.
Step 2: Open a ledger or wallet view
Ripple’s XRPL resource list identifies XRPL Explorer and XRPL Scan as explorer options. Enter the public XRPL account address, not a secret key, into an explorer and open its escrow or account-object view.
If you use XRP Toolkit, connect the personal wallet and open the Active Escrows table. The table lists active escrow objects associated with the connected account and provides the action controls when an escrow becomes releasable.
Explorers are useful for independent, read-only verification. A wallet interface is useful when you also need to sign a transaction. You can compare both views if a displayed status appears stale.

Step 3: Read the escrow fields
Amount
Confirm the XRP amount or token amount held by the object. Check the asset type carefully: native XRP and an issued token use different ledger representations and may have different authorization requirements.
Destination
The destination is the account that receives the escrowed funds when the escrow is finished. Verify every character before signing. A successful finish sends the funds according to the escrow object; it does not let you redirect them to a new address.

FinishAfter
FinishAfter is the earliest time at which a time lock can complete. It is an eligibility boundary, not a promise that a wallet will automatically submit a transaction. Convert the displayed timestamp to UTC before comparing it with your current time.
CancelAfter
CancelAfter is the cancellation or expiry boundary. For token escrows, XRPL requires this field. If it passes before a valid finish, the escrow becomes expired and follows the cancellation path instead of the finish path.
Condition
Condition is optional cryptographic logic. When present, a finisher must provide the corresponding fulfillment in addition to satisfying any time rule. A timestamp by itself is therefore insufficient for a conditional escrow.
Step 4: Determine the current escrow state
Held
Before FinishAfter, the escrow is Held. A finish transaction submitted early will not meet the time requirement.
Ready
After FinishAfter, a time-only escrow is Ready. The ledger now accepts a properly authorized EscrowFinish transaction. If a condition exists, the required fulfillment must also be correct.
Expired
If CancelAfter passes first, the escrow is Expired. It cannot be finished after that point; an eligible party must use EscrowCancel under the documented rules. Cancellation returns the funds to the sender when the transaction meets those rules, rather than paying the destination.

When an interface shows both a date and an action, trust the action allowed by the validated ledger state. A calendar date copied from a notification can be in a different time zone or can omit the few seconds associated with ledger close.
Step 5: Convert the timestamp correctly
- Locate the exact value. Copy the full
FinishAftervalue shown by the explorer or wallet, including its date and time. - Set the same time zone. Convert it to UTC and compare it with a current UTC clock. Do not compare a UTC ledger time directly with local time without conversion.
- Check both boundaries. Read
CancelAfteras well. A finish estimate is useful only while the finish boundary occurs before expiry. - Allow ledger-close variance. Plan for approximately five seconds of protocol timing variation rather than treating the timestamp as a guaranteed wall-clock instant.
- Look for a validated state change. Wait until the object is shown as Ready or the wallet exposes a Finish action. A countdown reaching zero is not proof that a finish transaction has been validated.
Step 6: Finish or cancel the escrow safely
Finishing a releasable escrow
In XRP Toolkit, the action column shows Finish when the escrow is releasable. Select the escrow, review the destination and amount, and approve the transaction in the connected compatible personal wallet. A hardware wallet such as Ledger is listed by the Toolkit tutorial as a compatible device. The signer must be eligible for that escrow; merely viewing the object does not grant permission.

Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAfter signing, wait for the transaction to be validated and then refresh the account. Check the transaction result and the destination balance rather than relying only on a local wallet notification. Network fees and a failed transaction can leave the escrow unchanged.
Canceling an expired escrow
When the action column shows Cancel, verify that the object is expired and that cancellation is the intended outcome. Approve an EscrowCancel transaction only after checking who receives the returned funds under the escrow rules. A cancel operation is not an alternative way to redirect funds to the destination account.
Why an exchange address usually cannot do this
An exchange generally controls the signing keys for its deposit and withdrawal infrastructure. Even if an explorer shows an escrow associated with an exchange-controlled address, a customer normally cannot sign the required transaction. Use the exchange’s own withdrawal process and support channel for that account.
Conditional and token escrows need extra checks
Time plus a condition
A conditional escrow can combine a time lock with a cryptographic condition. Reaching FinishAfter makes the time requirement pass, but the finisher must still submit the correct fulfillment. If the fulfillment is missing or invalid, a finish attempt can fail even though the timestamp has passed.

Trust Line Tokens
The XRPL TokenEscrow amendment supports Trust Line Tokens. The issuer must have enabled the Allow Trust Line Locking flag for the relevant token. Depending on the token’s authorization model, authorization can be required before creation, completion, or cancellation.
Multi-Purpose Tokens
Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) issuers must enable both Can Escrow and Can Transfer. Those issuer settings are separate from the holder’s wallet display and can prevent an otherwise correctly timed operation.

Freeze and lock conditions
A deep-frozen or otherwise locked token cannot be finished by its holder. Cancellation may still be possible when the documented conditions are met, so inspect the issuer and escrow rules before treating a failed finish as a timing problem.

Common reasons XRP is still unavailable after the unlock time
The timestamp passed but no finish was submitted
XRPL does not automatically create an EscrowFinish transaction at the moment a time lock matures. The escrow remains intact until an eligible signer submits and validates one.

A date shown without a time zone can be misleading. Recheck the full UTC value and wait for a validated ledger close at or after the boundary.
A condition is still unsatisfied
Inspect whether Condition is present. A missing or incorrect fulfillment prevents completion even when the time requirement has passed.
The escrow expired first
Compare the two boundaries. If CancelAfter came first, the correct action is cancellation, not finishing.
The token’s issuer settings block completion
For Trust Line Tokens and MPTs, verify the required issuer flags and any authorization. A deep freeze or lock can make finishing impossible for the holder.
The balance is held by an exchange
An exchange withdrawal hold can remain after an unrelated personal escrow becomes ready. Check the platform’s stated reason and contact its support team; there is no universal exchange withdrawal service-level date established by XRPL documentation.
The transaction failed or is not validated
Open the transaction result and confirm validation. A rejected signature, insufficient fee balance, incorrect fulfillment, or authorization failure leaves the escrow in its previous state. Do not assume that a wallet’s submitted notification means the ledger accepted the transaction.
Security checklist before signing
- Use only a public account address in an explorer; never paste a secret key or recovery phrase into a website.
- Confirm the destination, asset, amount, and escrow identifier on the signing device.
- Use a compatible personal wallet for self-custody operations; do not attempt to move an exchange-controlled escrow with your own keys.
- Verify that the action is Finish or Cancel and that it matches the current Held, Ready, or Expired state.
- Check the validated transaction result after signing and keep its ledger reference for your records.
Ripple’s corporate escrow is a separate question
In a December 16, 2017 explanation, Ripple’s David Schwartz wrote that Ripple had locked 55 billion XRP—55% of the total possible supply—into a series of escrows to make supply more predictable. That explanation described releases of up to one billion XRP per month, with unused XRP placed into a new escrow.
Ripple’s current facts page reports, as of June 30, 2026, 32,600,000,000 XRP placed in escrow, 37,656,053,914 XRP held by Ripple, and 62,329,587,596 XRP distributed. Those are corporate holdings and distribution figures. They do not identify an individual account’s FinishAfter, change an exchange’s withdrawal policy, or make a customer’s XRP withdrawable.

A practical decision path
- Is the XRP in your own XRPL account? If yes, inspect Escrow objects in an explorer or XRP Toolkit. If no, use the exchange’s status and policy information.
- Is there a
FinishAftervalue? Convert it to UTC and compare it withCancelAfter. - Is the escrow time-only? If yes, expect readiness at the first validated ledger close at or after
FinishAfter. If a condition exists, obtain the required fulfillment as well. - What state is validated? Held means wait; Ready means submit
EscrowFinish; Expired means follow theEscrowCancelpath. - Did the transaction validate? Confirm the ledger result and destination balance before treating the XRP as available.
