Before you buy, read the airline’s own family-seating policy, compare it with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) family seating dashboard, and check the seat rules for your exact fare. The dashboard’s listed commitment concerns an adult seated next to a child age 13 or under, subject to conditions; it does not automatically promise seats together for every member of a family.
Start with the airline’s policy, then check the DOT dashboard
On the airline’s website, search for “family seating,” “children and family travel,” or “seat assignments.” Look for the eligible child’s age, who counts as an accompanying adult, which fares qualify, and any conditions about reservations or seat availability. The DOT advises travelers to get this information directly from the airline: Tips for Families and Links to Airline Webpages. If the policy does not answer your situation, contact the airline’s reservations team and ask about your specific itinerary and fare.
Then use the DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard as a comparison. The dashboard was last updated September 5, 2025, and reports whether each airline committed to adjacent seats at no additional cost for children age 13 or under and an accompanying adult, across all fare types, subject to limited conditions.

Check the fare and reservation before paying
Confirm seat-selection rules for the fare
Review the seat-selection terms in the booking flow before choosing a ticket. DOT notes that basic economy fares often do not allow passengers to select seats. A carrier’s general family policy and a particular fare’s seat-selection rules may interact, so ask the airline whether its commitment applies to your fare and how seats will be assigned.
Keep the child and accompanying adult on one reservation
Same-reservation booking is a common condition. DOT says airlines generally identify travelers as one party through the same reservation record and give priority to parents and children booked together when assigning or reassigning seats. If you already have separate reservations, ask whether the airline can combine or cross-reference them; do not assume it has linked the records automatically.

Read what “family seating” actually covers
A commitment to seat an accompanying adult next to a young child is not necessarily a commitment to seat the entire family together. Check how the policy handles multiple children, multiple adults, party size, cabin, aircraft layout, and available adjacent seats. The dashboard’s conditions can include whether adjacent seats are available in the selected class at booking and whether the aircraft is later replaced by a smaller one.

- The child and accompanying adult are on the same reservation.
- Adjacent seats are available at booking in the selected class of service.
- The aircraft is not substituted with a smaller aircraft.
- The adult either selects seats for the entire reservation or skips seat selection for the entire reservation, and does not change assignments after they are made.
- The seat layout can physically accommodate the number of young children next to the accompanying adult or adults.
When those conditions are met, the dashboard says an airline that assigns seats will provide adjacent assignments no later than the day before the flight. For an airline with open seating, the listed conditions instead include booking on the same reservation, telling the gate agent before boarding begins, and a layout that can accommodate the children next to the adult. Follow the specific carrier’s current instructions rather than assuming all airlines use the same seating process.
Verify the assignment after booking and before departure
- After booking: Review the seat assignments in the airline’s booking record. If the child and adult are not adjacent, or the status is unclear, contact the airline’s reservations team promptly and ask what options are available before travel.
- If booked through a third party: Confirm any change directly with the airline and check that the updated assignment appears in the carrier’s own record.
- Before going to the airport: Recheck the assignments with the airline. DOT recommends reconfirming because an aircraft substitution can affect seat assignments.
- At the airport if the issue remains: Tell airline staff early. DOT says the airline may be able to seat each child next to an adult even if the whole family cannot sit together.
If the seating issue is not resolved, DOT says travelers may complain to the airline or to DOT. Keep the reservation details and records of any seat changes available when contacting them.

Is a universal family-seating rule already in force?
No final universal seating requirement is established by the DOT agenda entry cited here. The agency’s 2026 Unified Agenda lists “Family Seating in Air Transportation” as a proposed-rule matter, classifies it as a long-term action, and gives the next action as undetermined. Treat that as a rulemaking status entry—not as proof that every airline must guarantee family seating on every booking. For a booking decision, use the airline’s current policy and the dated DOT dashboard.
