Use ffprobe to inspect a video file before streaming it: check the video stream’s codec, frame rate, and bitrate, then compare those results with YouTube’s guidance for your workflow. A prerecorded upload and a live encoder feed use different recommendations, so don’t treat their bitrate tables as interchangeable.

First: are you uploading a file or sending a live feed?

YouTube’s recommendations depend on whether you are uploading a finished video or streaming from an encoder. For an upload, inspect the file you will submit. For a live stream, inspect the source file if you are playing prerecorded material, and separately check the encoder’s output settings and network capacity. A file’s bitrate does not establish the bitrate that a live encoder will send.

Also note the resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether the video is SDR or HDR before comparing it with YouTube’s guidance. YouTube’s upload recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and dynamic range; its live recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings and live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. These are configuration recommendations, not universal pass/fail limits for a video.

Inspect the file with ffprobe

ffprobe, included with FFmpeg, reports information about media streams and the container. Open a terminal or command prompt, change to the folder containing the video, and run:

ffprobe -hide_banner -show_format -show_streams input.mp4

Replace input.mp4 with the file’s actual name. If the file is elsewhere, provide its path; quote the path if it contains spaces. The command displays details for each stream as well as container-level information. FFmpeg documents these options in its ffprobe documentation.

Find the video stream’s codec and frame rate

In the output, locate the stream identified as video, commonly shown as codec_type=video. Read its codec_name for the codec and check the frame-rate fields, typically r_frame_rate and avg_frame_rate. These fields may differ or may be reported differently depending on the file. Preserve the reported value rather than rounding it: for example, 29.97 fps is not the same displayed rate as 30 fps. YouTube identifies 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 fps as accepted less-common frame rates, and recommends using the frame rate at which the material was recorded. See YouTube’s upload encoding guidance and upload troubleshooting guidance.

Read bitrate without confusing file and stream values

Check the video stream’s bit_rate when present. Do not mistake an audio stream’s bitrate for the video bitrate, or the container’s overall bit_rate for the video stream’s value. Some files do not expose a bitrate field, and reported fields can vary with the container or stream. If the field is missing, report that it is not available in the probe output rather than guessing.

A reported bitrate describes the file or stream metadata; it is not a universal quality score and does not reveal every detail of how the video was encoded. For live streaming, the encoder’s chosen output settings and the connection’s sustained upload capacity matter too.

Compare an uploaded video with YouTube’s recommendations

YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends H.264 video, progressive scan, and encoding at the frame rate used during recording. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and SDR or HDR. The examples below are values from YouTube Help accessed on October 3, 2026; the page does not state a publication year.

Upload format 24/25/30 fps 48/50/60 fps
SDR 720p 5 Mbps 7.5 Mbps
SDR 1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
SDR 2160p (4K) 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps
HDR 1080p 10 Mbps 15 Mbps
HDR 2160p (4K) 44–56 Mbps 66–85 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates, not minimum requirements that decide whether a file is valid or how good it will look. Check the complete upload settings page for other resolutions and details; do not interpolate a recommendation for a configuration that is not listed.

Compare a live encoder with YouTube’s live guidance

For live encoder ingestion, YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that does not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate table depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Live encoder codec 1080p30 1080p60
H.264 14 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are the corresponding recommended values shown in YouTube Help’s live table, accessed October 3, 2026. Consult the complete live encoder table for other resolutions and frame rates rather than extrapolating.

YouTube Help says, “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose.” That detection does not replace checking that your encoder, stream health, and connection can sustain the settings you intend to use.

Check network capacity and test the actual stream

For a live event, run an upload-speed test and leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom; a connection that only just matches the encoder’s target can be vulnerable to fluctuations. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health while live. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common inspection and streaming issues

  • No bitrate appears: The file may not expose that metadata. Check whether you are viewing the video stream rather than the container or audio stream; do not infer a value from file size alone.
  • The frame-rate fields differ: Read both reported fields and preserve their values. Do not silently round a fractional rate or substitute the container’s rate for the video stream’s rate.
  • The displayed bitrate seems much larger than expected: Confirm that you are reading the video stream’s bitrate, not the overall format bitrate or an audio stream’s bitrate.
  • A live stream buffers or loses health: Compare the encoder target with sustained upload capacity, restore YouTube’s recommended headroom, and test again with representative audio and motion.
  • A recommendation does not match your setup: Check whether you are comparing upload settings or live ingestion settings, and verify resolution, frame rate, codec, and SDR/HDR status before using the relevant YouTube table.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded videos looping on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can resume the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video, not a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
