You cannot certify a presale token as safe with a checklist. You can verify that you are examining the right contract, find out what its code and administrators can do, compare an audit with the deployed version, and check whether the actual trading pool could support a sale. A presale allocation is not proof that an active market—or a dependable way to exit—will exist.

Start with the token’s identity and sale terms

Before connecting a wallet or sending funds, identify the token’s blockchain network and exact contract address. Confirm the address against the project’s official sale materials and the relevant blockchain explorer; if a trading venue or pool is named, check that it refers to the same address on the same chain. A token name or ticker alone does not establish identity. The SEC’s investor guidance asks buyers to check whether blockchain code is public, while Korean regulator guidance emphasizes confirming a coin by contract address.

  • Save the sale terms, white paper, and any stated audit or liquidity-lock evidence.
  • Record the operating entity, named team and advisers, sale dates, token allocation, delivery schedule, refund conditions, expected trading venue, and any promised listing or liquidity arrangement.
  • Compare claims across the project’s materials, the explorer, and the audit report. Treat mismatches or missing information as unresolved questions, not as proof of a particular outcome.

The SEC advises prospective buyers to find out how funds will be used and what rights or resale limits attach to a token. Disclosure frameworks can also be category- and jurisdiction-specific: for example, ESMA’s MiCA disclosure items for asset-referenced tokens include offer phases, payment and delivery information, relevant refund terms, trading access, token rights, transfer restrictions, liquidity arrangements, and technology risks. That framework does not mean every presale is subject to MiCA.

Inspect the deployed contract and its controls

Open the explorer for the stated chain, search the exact contract address, and inspect the contract or code view if one is available. A verified source-code view can help you understand the deployed contract, but it does not by itself prove that the token is safe. Check whether the contract uses a proxy or upgrade mechanism, and identify any owner, administrator, or other privileged roles. If source code is not published or verified on the explorer, you cannot independently inspect it through that source view.

What to inspect Question to answer Why it matters
Supply controls Can an owner or administrator mint more tokens or change supply-related settings? Privileged supply changes may affect holders and the token’s economics.
Transfers and selling Can an administrator pause transfers, blacklist addresses, restrict transfers, or change who may sell? A token balance does not guarantee that a holder can transfer or sell it.
Fees and trading rules Can fees or taxes be changed? Are there unusual purchase or sale conditions? Adjustable charges or asymmetric rules may make a sale costly or impossible under some conditions.
Upgrade and administrator powers Can a proxy point to a different implementation, and who controls that change? The code currently visible may not be the only code that can govern the token later.

These are review prompts, not findings about a specific presale. A technical scanner or a third-party badge is not a substitute for understanding the deployed code and its permissions; no tool should be assumed to detect every risk. If you cannot interpret a material control, record it as unknown rather than treating it as harmless.

Match any audit to the live contract

An audit is bounded evidence about specified work, not a certification of the project or its future market. Check the auditor, report date, covered contract address and version, scope, exclusions, findings, and whether reported fixes were reviewed. If the token uses a proxy, determine whether the report addresses the relevant implementation and upgrade arrangement. Compare the audited version with the deployed contract you just inspected.

The SEC’s Investor Bulletin recommends asking whether an independent cybersecurity audit exists. ESMA’s disclosure items call for audit outcomes when an audit has been conducted. Neither an audit’s existence nor a clean result for its stated scope establishes business honesty, adequate liquidity, future value, or a guaranteed ability to sell.

Check whether liquidity could support an exit

Find the actual decentralized-exchange pool associated with the verified token address, then check which assets are in it and how much is available. Assess the pool against a plausible sale size for your own position: a quoted token price is not the same as the amount you could receive when selling. Thin liquidity can mean a sale moves the price substantially, and a pool can exist without offering enough depth for the sale you need.

Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
  1. Identify the pool. Confirm its token address and chain rather than relying on a promotional screenshot or a similarly named token.
  2. Assess depth for your scenario. Compare the pool’s available assets with the sale size you might realistically need to make. There is no universal safe liquidity threshold established here.
  3. Identify who controls the liquidity-provider position. Determine whether the position can be withdrawn, transferred, or otherwise controlled, and by whom.
  4. Verify lock claims on-chain. If a lock is claimed, check the relevant lock contract, the position covered, the beneficiary, and the unlock time. A lock can constrain a particular withdrawal route during a period; it does not guarantee durable demand or sufficient market depth.

Regulators identify liquidity as a risk to value; a 2026 Korean regulator notice also warns about decentralized-exchange liquidity shortages and volatile prices. Those warnings do not supply a universal threshold for judging a particular pool.

Evaluate delivery, refunds, and resale restrictions

Read the sale terms for when tokens will be delivered, whether delivery depends on conditions, whether refunds are available and in what circumstances, and whether transfers or resales are restricted. Identify which entity is responsible for any promised listing or liquidity arrangement. A stated plan to list a token is not evidence that a venue will list it or that buyers will be present once trading begins.

Protect your wallet when signing

  1. Recheck the chain, token contract address, recipient, and amount shown for the transaction.
  2. Read the wallet’s approval request: understand which token and spending permission it grants, and whether the requested amount matches what you intend.
  3. Review existing approvals through a reputable wallet or chain tool, and remove permissions you no longer need where the wallet or network supports it.
  4. Never share a seed phrase or private key. Treat unsolicited offers and requests to sign unexpected transactions as suspicious.

Korean regulator guidance recommends managing wallet approvals and checking transaction details. The SEC also warns about theft and the possibility of limited recovery. A hardware wallet may help with custody, but it does not verify a contract or make a token liquid.

Recognize claims that need verification

Be especially cautious around guaranteed high returns, urgency, unsolicited offers, and claims of outsized returns. The SEC identifies those as warning signs. The CFTC advises checking project affiliations, use of funds, token rights, liquidity, and recovery limits. “Audited,” “liquidity locked,” and “listing soon” are claims to verify against the report, on-chain records, and sale terms—not conclusions about safety.

“Buying digital coins or tokens only because you expect to sell them at a higher price later is the definition of speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how good a white paper, application or business plan sounds.”

— CFTC customer advisory

What a general checklist cannot tell you

A token-specific assessment requires at least the chain, contract address, current deployed code, audit report, pool address, and sale terms. Without those materials, no one can responsibly give a token-specific verdict. Even with them, code review and liquidity checks cannot guarantee future demand, price, access to a venue, or recovery after fraud or theft. The SEC and CFTC note that legal status and rights depend on circumstances; this checklist is not legal or financial advice and does not predict a token’s price.
