Before buying a phone, check the exact model’s official support terms for both operating-system upgrades and security updates, then calculate how much support will remain when you buy it. “Years of updates” is not specific enough on its own: the commitment may differ by update type, model, region, carrier, rollout schedule, and the date the support clock starts.
How do I check how long a phone gets updates?
- Identify the exact phone. Record its model name and, where available, its regional or carrier-specific variant. A brand-wide statement may apply only to selected models.
- Find the manufacturer’s current, official policy for that model. Prefer a model-specific duration or end date over general language such as “long-term support.” Confirm that the page includes your region and variant.
- Separate OS upgrades from security updates. Write down each commitment independently. A promise of several years of security patches does not automatically mean the phone will receive the same number of Android or other OS version upgrades.
- Check when the term begins. The support period may start at first availability rather than the day you purchase the phone. If you are considering an older or discounted model, subtract the time already elapsed from the original term.
- Check release cadence and caveats. See whether security updates are listed as monthly, quarterly, or less frequent, and whether availability or timing varies by market, carrier, or model.
- Compare remaining support with your ownership plans. Use the purchase date and the policy’s stated start point to estimate how much of the commitment remains. Recheck the manufacturer’s page close to purchase; eligible-model lists can change.
For two or more candidate phones, compare the remaining support period or published end date, OS-upgrade commitment, security-update commitment, patch cadence, term start, model and regional eligibility, and how clearly the manufacturer states its current policy. A single flagship example is not enough to rank an entire brand.
How many years of updates does this phone get?
There is no single update term for every phone from a manufacturer. These official examples illustrate why the answer must be checked by model and update type; they are not a complete brand ranking.
Google Pixel
Google says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates, starting when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. The support may also include new or upgraded Pixel Drop features. Google lists Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel Fold generations for five years of OS and security updates from their first US Google Store availability. Its page also identifies earlier generations that no longer receive Android version or security updates. These are Google’s terms for the named models, not a universal Android policy. Samsung Galaxy
Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement offered up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select devices. The announcement says availability and timing can vary by model and the timing of Android upgrades. Because this is a dated policy announcement, do not assume it describes a later phone: check current information for the exact model. Samsung’s 2022 policy announcement
Samsung’s current security page lists selected Galaxy devices on monthly, quarterly, and biannual security-update schedules. It says availability and timing can vary by market, network provider, or model, and that the lists are subject to change. A cadence listing is useful, but it should not be mistaken for a model’s complete OS-upgrade commitment or a guarantee that every variant follows the same schedule. Will this phone still get security updates?
Check the exact model against the manufacturer’s current security-support information. Look for whether the model remains listed, its update cadence, and any stated end date or support duration. If the manufacturer gives a term rather than an end date, use the term’s start point to estimate whether support will continue through your expected ownership period.
A phone’s Settings screen can tell you whether an update is currently available; it cannot establish how many years of future support remain. For Pixel phones, Google’s instructions are Settings > System > Software update. The screen shows update status and next steps. Google says updates roll out gradually and may take a few weeks depending on carrier and device, so a missing update does not by itself prove that the phone has reached end of support. Other manufacturers may use different menu paths; follow that maker’s instructions. Google’s instructions for checking and updating Pixel software
