Do not treat a marketplace GPU as genuine just because the price, seller profile, box, or product label looks convincing. Check whether the price is plausible, the listing shows the actual card and clearly describes what is included, the seller will keep the transaction on-platform, and the card’s physical and reported hardware match the claimed model. Any one warning sign is a reason to pause and verify—not proof of fraud. If you buy, preserve the listing and test the card promptly after delivery, while you still have time to use the marketplace’s remedy.

What warning signs should I check in a GPU listing?

Look at the whole transaction rather than relying on a single clue. A suspicious price, unhelpful photos, unclear condition, weak return terms, pressure to pay elsewhere, or hardware that does not match the advertised model can each raise concern. Several signs together make it especially important to stop and verify before paying.

A useful way to think about the decision is to ask whether the seller’s claim is supported by independent details: do the photos show the exact card, does the description identify its model and memory, is there a practical way to resolve a mismatch, and can you inspect or test the item? A listing may be legitimate despite one imperfect detail, but an unanswered question should not be mistaken for reassurance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the price unusually low?

Compare the asking price with multiple current listings for the same model and condition, and with the cost of a new equivalent. A large gap is a warning signal, not a universal fraud threshold: there is no fixed discount percentage that makes a card fake. Check that the listing’s condition, included accessories, shipping, and return terms do not explain the difference.

A 2026 Tom’s Hardware report described a purported Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080 16GB Aero OC listed on Xianyu for $143.50, against an approximately $1,199 launch price. The report characterized the asking price as about 12% of the original retail value and treated it as a red flag. That example illustrates why an extreme bargain deserves scrutiny; it does not establish a safe price range for other cards or markets.

Compare like with like: a used card with disclosed damage or missing accessories is not directly comparable to a new, complete retail card. Also account for shipping and the stated return terms instead of comparing only the headline price. If the gap remains extreme and the seller offers no credible explanation, pause rather than treating urgency or scarcity language as a reason to skip checks. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance similarly recommends shopping around and checking sellers and products before buying.

Do the photos show the actual card?

Look for clear, consistent pictures of the exact item: the card itself, its connectors, labels, identifying area where appropriate, packaging, and any accessories the seller says are included. Stock images or pictures that conceal the item make it harder to confirm what is being sold. Ask for a current photo of the exact card if the listing does not provide one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the full description, not just the title. Phrases such as “box only,” “picture,” or “parts,” as well as language saying the item is non-working, can change what the sale actually includes. A sealed box, “open box” label, or “like new” condition claim is not authentication; the actual card and the terms for resolving a mismatch matter more than packaging.

Check whether the written description and images agree. A title may name a complete graphics card while a description limits the sale to packaging, a picture, or a non-working item. Note whether power adapters or other accessories are included if the seller claims they are; do not assume an item shown in a stock photograph comes with the purchase. If an important detail is ambiguous, ask before checkout and keep the answer in the marketplace message thread.

A current verification photo can help establish that the seller has the item, but a benchmark screenshot is not conclusive proof that the card tested is the one that will be shipped. Treat seller-provided images as one piece of evidence, not a guarantee.

Is the listing and seller behavior clear?

Check the seller’s history and whether the listing answers basic questions about model, memory, condition, included parts, shipping, and returns. Feedback or account age can inform your judgment, but neither proves that a particular card is genuine. Be wary of evasive answers or urgency that discourages you from checking the details.

Keep messages and checkout on the marketplace. A request to move the conversation or payment elsewhere can leave you with fewer practical protections. The Federal Trade Commission advises against sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency, because recovery can be difficult. Prefer a payment method with a dispute route, and check the marketplace’s live buyer-protection eligibility and listing-specific terms before paying.

The FTC’s warning is particularly important when a seller makes one of those methods the only acceptable way to pay. Do not assume that a payment app or a personal arrangement outside the marketplace will carry the same protections as an eligible marketplace checkout. If the seller says the price or item is available only if you pay off-platform, weigh that demand as part of the risk—not as a harmless shortcut. Confirm the platform’s current terms for the specific transaction, since eligibility and exceptions can vary.

Do the physical card and reported hardware agree?

Compare the claimed model and memory capacity with authoritative product information, then check whether the card’s physical layout and reported device identity are consistent with that claim. A printed label or outer shell is not enough. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 report on the purported RTX 4080 described a different GPU die and questionable memory beneath a card presented as that model.

If you can inspect a card in person, look for damaged PCIe contacts, a cracked board, loose screws, excessive dust, or signs it has been opened. Those clues may point to previous repair or rough handling, but none alone proves that the card is counterfeit. Ask specific questions about anything that looks inconsistent rather than treating cosmetic wear as a verdict.

For a used graphics card, the important comparison is not just whether the cooler or product sticker looks familiar. Check whether the claimed model, memory capacity, board layout, and reported device information make sense together. A serial number or receipt may add context, but neither resolves a contradiction between the physical card and its reported hardware. If the seller provides technical evidence, treat it as evidence about the item shown—not automatic proof that the same card will be delivered.

How should I verify a GPU before paying?

Use a short sequence that creates a record of what was promised and checks whether the sale has a workable remedy. If the seller will not provide enough information to do that, do not let a low price rush the decision.

  1. Write down the exact offer. Record the full model name, claimed memory, condition, included accessories, seller identity, asking price, shipping terms, and return terms. Save the listing and messages before checkout in case the text or photos later change or disappear.
  2. Check price context. Compare multiple current references for the same card and condition, and consider the price of a new equivalent. Account for shipping and any stated defect or missing accessory. An unusually large unexplained gap is a reason to pause, not a reason to assume you have found a safe bargain.
  3. Read every line of the listing. Look for exclusions, “box only,” “picture,” “parts,” non-working language, ambiguous condition, missing accessories, or disclaimers that contradict the title. Make sure you understand whether the sale is for a complete, working card.
  4. Request evidence of the exact item. Ask for current photos that show the card, relevant labels and connectors, and anything else needed to resolve a specific uncertainty. If the seller cannot or will not clarify a material detail, factor that into the decision.
  5. Confirm the transaction route and remedy. Keep payment and communication on-platform where possible. Check whether the transaction qualifies for the marketplace’s current buyer protection, what return conditions apply, and when a case must be opened.
  6. Save your records before checkout. Keep the listing, photographs, seller messages, payment receipt, and stated terms. These records can help show what the seller promised if the delivered card differs.

Make the questions specific rather than asking only whether the card is “real.” For example, ask the seller to confirm the exact model and memory, whether the card is working, what is included, and whether the photos show the item that will ship. A direct answer can help clarify the offer; a refusal or answer that changes the subject leaves the underlying uncertainty in place.

Should I buy a GPU locally or have it shipped?

Neither local pickup nor shipping establishes authenticity by itself. The useful comparison is how much evidence you can inspect, whether the transaction has a remedy, and whether you can test the actual card before or soon after payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For local pickup, arrange an inspection of the actual card if feasible. Check that the model and condition match the listing, and look over the board and contacts for damage or signs of prior opening. An in-person look can reveal physical issues, but it does not replace checking the reported hardware under a workload.
  • For a shipped purchase, prioritize clear actual-item photos, a complete description, on-platform checkout, and a return or dispute path you understand. Preserve the listing and messages before the seller ships.
  • For either route, weigh evidence quality, transaction protection, testability, price realism, and what you can do if the card is misrepresented. Do not substitute a seller badge, feedback score, receipt, or single photograph for that overall assessment.

The trade-off is practical, not a guarantee that one format is safe. Local inspection may let you see the particular card before paying, while a shipped purchase makes the platform’s delivery and return procedures especially important. In both cases, ask whether you can document what was offered and whether you can act if the card is wrong. If a local seller will not allow a reasonable look, or a shipped listing has no understandable remedy, the convenience or discount may not compensate for the uncertainty.

How do I check a used GPU after it arrives?

Check the delivered item against the saved listing, document its condition, and run a sustained workload promptly. NVIDIA’s support instructions describe using GPU-Z to locate and save the video BIOS ROM file, which can add technical evidence when comparing the card with the advertised model.

  1. Document the delivery. Photograph or film the package and contents as received, and keep the shipping label and packing materials. This records the arrival condition; it does not guarantee a refund.
  2. Compare the card with the offer. Check the delivered model, memory claim, condition, and included accessories against the listing and its photos. Record any mismatch or damage before altering or returning the item.
  3. Capture reported hardware information. Run GPU-Z and note the reported GPU name, memory, bus/interface information, and BIOS data. NVIDIA’s instructions describe opening the utility, finding “BIOS Version,” and saving the video BIOS ROM file. Keep the resulting information with your purchase records.
  4. Test promptly under load. Run a demanding benchmark, game, or other sustained workload and monitor stability, temperature, fan speed, and power use. Tom’s Hardware recommends testing promptly with demanding benchmarks or games and monitoring utilities. Stop if the card shows a serious problem; do not wait until a return or dispute window is nearly over to decide whether it works as described.

GPU-Z is a useful check, not a certificate of authenticity. A manipulated BIOS or physical substitution can require deeper inspection or professional diagnosis, so interpret the software report alongside the card itself and the listing. A seller’s benchmark screenshot cannot establish that the shipped item is the same hardware.

Keep the test results factual and tied to the item you received. Save screenshots or notes showing the reported model and memory, the BIOS information, and any instability or other material problem. A benchmark is useful for observing how the card behaves under load; it is not a standalone authenticity verdict. If a test exposes a serious problem, preserve the evidence and use the applicable marketplace process rather than spending the return period attempting repairs or negotiating privately.

What can I do if the GPU is fake, faulty, or not as described?

Keep the dispute on the marketplace, act within the applicable deadline, and present a clear record of the promise and the mismatch. Do not rely on informal negotiations outside the platform if those could leave you without the marketplace’s process.

Use the marketplace’s process first

eBay says counterfeit items are prohibited and that only items known to be genuine should be listed. Its Money Back Guarantee policy says eligible buyers may seek a refund when an item does not match the listing, arrives broken or faulty without adequate disclosure, or has strong indicators of being counterfeit. The policy generally gives buyers up to 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date to request a not-as-described return, subject to exceptions and listing-specific terms; sellers generally have three business days to respond. Confirm the current policy and the terms for the specific listing before relying on those timeframes.

Attach the saved listing, photos, relevant GPU-Z and BIOS information, workload results, and seller messages to the case. Keep the explanation factual: identify what was advertised, what arrived, and how the evidence shows the difference. eBay’s security guidance says a suspected fraudulent listing can be reported through the “Report this item” link at the bottom of the listing.

eBay’s counterfeit policy says, “Only list items you’re certain are genuine,” and also says, “If authentication can’t be confirmed, don’t list.” That describes the platform’s rule for sellers; it does not mean a buyer can determine authenticity from a listing badge or a seller’s assurance alone. If the delivered card appears materially different from the offer, use the platform’s process and provide the evidence you saved.

Consider a card dispute where applicable

If you paid by credit card, the FTC says you may be able to dispute a charge for an item that is missing, wrong, or defective. Contact the card issuer promptly; the FTC says a dispute letter should reach the card company within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. Keep receipts, emails, listing information, and other purchase records. This is U.S. FTC guidance, and a card dispute is not a substitute for checking the marketplace’s own process and deadlines.

Do not wait for a marketplace conversation to run on indefinitely if a separate card-dispute deadline may apply. Keep copies of the receipt, listing, messages, and any return or case records, and ask the card issuer about its process and timing. The FTC’s guidance is that the letter should reach the card company within 60 days of the first bill showing the error; contact the issuer promptly rather than assuming an informal seller promise pauses that period.

How do I decide whether the remaining risk is acceptable?

Before checkout, ask whether the evidence, transaction terms, and likely remedy make sense together. If one part is weak, the others matter more—not less.

  • Evidence: Can you identify the exact card from current photos and a specific description, rather than relying only on a title or stock image?
  • Consistency: Do the model and memory claims make sense alongside the physical card and any available hardware information?
  • Protection: Can you pay and communicate through the platform, and have you checked the current eligibility and deadlines for a return or dispute?
  • Testability: Can you inspect the actual item locally or test it soon after delivery, while a remedy is still available?
  • Price: Does the price remain plausible after comparison with multiple current references and a new equivalent?

If the seller blocks reasonable verification, insists on an irreversible off-platform payment, or leaves the condition and remedy unclear, walking away is safer than trying to resolve those gaps after purchase. A good decision is not one based on finding a single perfect clue; it is one where the offer, item evidence, payment route, and remedy all fit together well enough for you to accept the remaining risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if a graphics card listing is fake?

No single clue proves a listing is fake. Compare the price with current alternatives, check that the photos show the actual card, read the full description for exclusions or non-working language, keep payment on-platform, and compare the delivered card’s physical and reported hardware with the claimed model.

Can GPU-Z tell me if my graphics card is counterfeit?

GPU-Z can report useful details such as the GPU name, memory, interface information, and BIOS data, and NVIDIA’s support instructions describe saving the video BIOS ROM file. It is evidence to compare with the listing, not a certificate of authenticity; a manipulated BIOS or physical substitution may need deeper inspection.

What should I look for before buying a GPU on eBay or Facebook Marketplace?

Look for actual-item photos, a clear model and memory description, realistic pricing, specific answers from the seller, and a payment and return route you understand. Check the current buyer-protection terms for the particular marketplace and transaction. Do not treat feedback, account age, or a seller badge alone as proof.

What should I do if the GPU I bought is not the model advertised?

Document the package and card, compare it with your saved listing, preserve GPU-Z and test results, and open a case through the marketplace within its applicable deadline. Avoid moving dispute discussions off-platform. If you paid by credit card, contact the issuer promptly; FTC guidance says a dispute letter should reach it within 60 days of the first bill showing the error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a GPU be fake even if it comes in a genuine retail box?

Yes. Packaging can be reused or paired with a different card, so the box and any seal should be treated as supporting context rather than proof that the hardware inside matches the advertised model.

Does a GPU serial number prove that a card is authentic?

No single identifying detail proves authenticity on its own. A serial or label is most useful when it agrees with the physical card, reported hardware, listing details, and a transaction that still has a remedy.

What is the video BIOS ROM file for?

It is a saved copy of the card’s video BIOS information that can be retained alongside GPU-Z readings and purchase records. It provides technical evidence for comparison, but it does not by itself certify that the card is genuine.

Can I report a suspicious listing if I did not buy the card?

eBay’s security guidance describes reporting a suspected fraudulent listing through the “Report this item” link at the bottom of the listing. Reporting it is separate from a buyer’s return or payment dispute.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Buy only when the listing, seller, payment route, and available hardware evidence tell a consistent story. A bargain or a convincing box is not enough: preserve the offer, pay through a protected route, and inspect and test the card promptly so you can act within the applicable remedy window.
